For quite some time in my life (approx. 15 years), I watched around 20 films per month. Any genre, apart from maybe romantic comedy (except when it was from the golden era of the 50's) or science fiction (apart from the great Alien series or Kubrick or...well, the "better" exceptions), because I never cared for those genres. But the films were from anywhere between 1914 and nowadays. So I guess I've seen a LOT of films, from all over the world. Pretty much ALL of these films... I rented them from a tiny video-shop, now gone obsolete sadly. The owner is, purely by accident, a couple of years later, a customer of me nowadays, so I see him at least 2x a week. Both of us were a HUGE fan of "Yi Yi" (I even play the track at the end of the film (made by his wife btw) on piano regularly, and have the sheet music if anyone is interested, just send me a PM). Again, purely by accident, I hear from another film lover that FINALLY this film has been made available by Criterion, but as a blu-ray. The ONLY reason I got a blu-ray player, was because I have been haunting down this film for years... So I finally ordered it, post-poning my "holy grail of films" for months, and waited for the right day. What can I say? Almost every shot is pure film magic. 4 hours and yet the time flies by. And the best thing for me? I was able to give it as a present for the video-shop owner who hadn't seen it either. :) Some times all the stars in the universe just allign. Doesn't happen very often, but when they do, it's pure magic !!

This film was popular in Taiwan, but I think the general population is unaware of the fact that it has been so well received on the Criterion Collection. When I tell them, they seem surprised and proud that something from Taiwan has made such an impact on world cinema.

I remember in March 1986, I was in a small cafe near Taiwan University. Edward Yang was there too, he was sitting on next table of mine and discussing the script with other people. After decades I still could remember his voice and appearance clearly. Greeting from Taiwan.

I stumbled upon this film ironically enough through the Criterion Collection's KZbin channel in a video about the film restoration of A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY, showing the difference between the degraded film quality to the restored version with it's rich color. Not going to give any of the plot away, but for me seeing it for the first time, it seemed like it was actually 2 films in one, as there is a plot change almost half way through the 237-minute film. Many thanks for your review, and many thanks to Criterion Collection for restoring this film to it's original beauty. Without their work, this film would still remain in relative obscurity and difficult to find.

Over the last week or so now I have been paying attention to this channel. I haven't bought a physical media disc in close to six years. Over the last year though I have been watching movies like Eraserhead, Onibaba, and the works of Wong Kar Wai on streaming. I've became ingulfed by these works of art to the point that I would go on HBO just to check to make sure these movies have still been on the streamer. But now, I'm trying the Criterion Collection because of you and this channel. Thank you. My first buys were The World of Wong Kar Wai box set, Drive My Car, and A Brighter Summer Day as a sample to see if i like Criterion. I chose these films because the way you talk about A Brighter Summer Day reminds me of how much I love not just that movie but passion i feel for the art cinema. Wong Kar Wai's films, Drive My Car and A Brighter Summer Day.

Love this masterpiece. I got one of the '1001 Movies To Watch Before You Die' books for Xmas when I was in my teens & held onto it for years, it was like my bible for a long time & there were certain movies in it that caught my eye & I was desperate to see but they were very hard to come by for a long time, well this was one of them. Before Criterion brought out the BluRay in the UK a few years back there was no other means of seeing it over here so I was ecstatic to finally get my hands on a copy & get the chance to see it. Needless to say that it didn't disappoint.

@@tyrusquiroz8810 There's no real set author, it's a book made up of writings from a whole host of film scholars & critics. It's a very thick book & they release a new edition every year for around £20, however I never felt the need to upgrade on the one I had from years ago because all the new ones do each year is add a few new write-ups on the best movies from the past year but most of us will have already seen & known of them anyway. You can get an older edition on Ebay for as cheap as 3 or 4 pound, it's a great place to start your education & act as a guide on the history of world film. Just type '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' into EBay & you'll get plenty of results. And yes Ran is certainly included, a number of Kurosawa's films are included.

So nice to hear this about this masterpiece! I watched it in theaters in the mid 2000s and have been begging Criterion to release it for years after, and that's after I downloaded an AWFUL copy online and custom made a cover. I'm so glad it is now in my grips in a clean package and restored doing it justice. This film was in awful shape before this copy. Thank you, Criterion! Side note, though this is an epic, I may like YiYi a tad more, just because it's a tighter package and a simpler watch yet reaches so much depths with its simplicity. Either way, E Yang is a beautiful filmmaker

long movies really intrigue me and I love going on the cinematic journey. To me, Once Upon A Time In America needs to be 5 hours, as does Fanny and Alexander, as i am m sure does a Brighter Summer Day, which I need to see. When the credits finally go up and it all comes together you realise you've seen a spectacle, and the length is a huge part of that.

Hi daisuke...greetings from India...i hope you are having a great time watching films around the world. I watched it on 18th April after your recommendation...it is made up of 237 minutes deliberately, depicting a simple story into a strenched array of time just to make the viewer dwell into the time of 1960s Taiwan... I guess this is the main strength of this film. This film is tough/challenge to watch if someone is new in the amazing and spiritual world of foreign language cinema.

Hey Daisuke! This is perfect timing for this video!! As you know, I frequently ask you questions regarding this film, before I’ve even seen it. As you would remember last year I said I would be watching it in April which is now! 😃 I will be watching it on Monday, and my first ever watch of A Brighter Summer Day!!!! You have persuaded me to buy the Blu Ray and to hold it of such regard even before I’ve even seen it! That’s power!!!!!

Like others, I've taken the time to watch A Brighter Summer Day while in quarantine. The timing of this is additionally interesting because I've started a journey in film with the intention to step way out of my comfort zone. With regards to Criterion specifically, I started with Do The Right Thing and Jackie Chan's Police Story, both superb in their own way. I followed those up with Picnic at Hanging Rock (via Criterion Channel) and, as of yesterday, A Brighter Summer Day. I think I've watched all of your videos about the movie and I want to thank you for sharing your thoughts. I felt there were so many threads throughout the film that I find hard to understand and articulate, but you've given me the words for a few elements of the film. I'll share those after a couple more viewings but the movie is really good. I'm excited to watch more of Yang's work.

Heard about this movie for so many years, maybe its time to finally take a look since we are in lockdown. I picked up Kobayashi's The Human Condition which is a huge undertaking of a watch so thats taking my attention at the moment, but Edward Yang is a filmmaker I really need to make a priority. The movie sounds like one of those mind blowing works, some movies really do leave you speechless and numb, and I think it is not a problem with you as a reviewer, quite the opposite, i think it takes an amazing reviewer to admit when the film has penetrated almost an area that is transcendent. Almost describing it would be trivial. I've felt that way before. Wonderful review Daisuke.

So, I did watch this film after seeing your strong recommendation. I did like it quite a lot. It's a film of quiet but real experience where the little things add up, and they might have been different, but one series of decisions outweighed another. It's not quite a fatalistic view, but it certainly puts the weight of evidence on life circumstances. Little cultural shocks here and there (Elvis night), but was continually reminded how under every culture we are all worried about the same things. The major thing I wish I had known beforehand was the real-life story this is based on. It really helped anchor my perception of the film and why that crime was such a shock in Taiwan. There's a terrifying scene in there I'll leave unsaid, but which hit very close to home. I'm undecided, ultimately, if a film like this is even worth assigning a rating. It doesn't exactly have the Aristotelian feel and structure of "what art is," but neither is it merely like a documentary or anything quite so pedestrian. I'm in an odd place with it. But I did like it and it did move me, even if I did have to watch it in three sittings.

Hello Daisuke. I wrote I would get back to you after viewing the film, sorry it took so long. After my commentary I rented the film of Yang on itunes and I had 30 days to see it. Today was the last day to view it and I just finished it. I have to say it was a pain to watch… I thought these 4 hours would never end. And I say this with all respect to you and the others that love the film and that commented here. It’s one of the situation were you find yourself, as a viewer, not going with the majority, but that’s ok. I’ll try to explain what didn’t work for me. First the print on itunes was the Criterion one. Strangely some shots of the film were really sharp and sometimes shots would be really grainy. For me this version of almost 4 hours was too long. If you watch a movie this long and you don’t have interest in any characters you’re in trouble! :-) So I was, but I read that there were 3 versions of the film; a 237 minute version, a three-hour version and a shorter 127 minute version. (Maybe the short version would have better suited me). I’m going to quote movie director John McTierman (Die Hard) who used to say that you should have plenty of time to tell a story in 90 minutes! :-) As for the characters I found that the principal role of Si’r was plain and you don’t really care what happen to him. Is it because of a lack of charisma by the actor (or the fact that a lot of them were amateurs), something doesn’t work. There’s no evolution of Si’r through all the film, except the end where you question the crime as if the director didn’t knew how to end is film. And you see it (crime) coming! (Not only Ming is killed but her mother commits suicide, this is too much). The rivalry between the gangs is rather light for most part of the film. When the massacre happen you don’t believe it a second. There was no build up for so much violence. And although there are many victims the police doesn’t seems to care or some characters are not concern about was they did (like Si’r). Close to the end the lady cleaning the floor says « cops come all the time » but we never see them doing an investigation. The scenes with the movie crew and Si’r father arrest has no impact on the story… Although filmed with a nice cinematography too many long shots keeps you out of the storyline, it’s my feeling. Maybe the director wanted to tell to much stories at the same time, everything gets diluted. Too many family members, too many stories with Ming, etc...

Hello and not a problem at all my friend. You present your criticisms of the film very well and perhaps there is a kind of elliptical quality to the narrative presentation that could prevent a viewer from being fully engaged. That is a great point. This could be a reason why multiple viewings are so rewarding but at the same time its length could prevent that from happening. Anyway that is OK and thank you so much for sharing this viewpoint! Cheers my dear friend.

@@DaisukeBeppu I must say it a bit disturbing to not appreciate this film like you all do here. I really regret how it turned out for me. Maybe I need a second screening, some other time. (And it doesn’t mean I won’t try to see other films of E.Yang). I used to argue with a good friend of mine; he loved « Last year at Marienbad » from Alain Renais… and I hated this film. We used to make jokes about our oppositions. I think it ok not to be always agree on films, as long as there is respect in the exchange. To balance what I said about the E. Yang film and show my appreciation of asian cinema I can say that I had no trouble seeing «The Human Condition » of Masaki Kobayashi (part I, II and III are 9.5 hours long, so length is no problem). And I have a better opinion on actor Chen Chang (playing Si’r); i just found out that he continued acting after E.Yang film. He was playing a role in «Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon» (2000, Ang Lee) which I loved. (I read after my comments that this ABS Day was based on a true story. At the end you have details about how the murder case was handle. I almost didn’t saw this, I thought it was the end credits). Cheers my friend.
