Paris, Texas is a masterpiece. It’s one of my favorites. I’m happy that they put it out on 4k. I’m waiting for my copy to come in but just incase anyone that dose not know yet. It has been released by Curzon Film World (UK) in a 4k limited edition. That edition has a booklet, poster, and there is some new features for that release from what it looks like. The 4k has been said to be is All-Region but the Bluray is B-Region. It’s a fantastic film and It’s a must buy if you have not seen this film.

It's taking forever to get all these Val Lewton productions in HD formats. I've enjoyed watching all these pictures ever since the splendid laserdisc box with all 9 films was released (as well the great DVD box set from TCM). At last most of the licensed HD titles have finally arrived. These two films on a double bill from Criterion was a great idea (and with a booklet, at last, as a capper). These are two keystone films in the splendid Lewton filmography. I eagerly wait your overviews on both.

Thank you for your interests in what I'm watching Daisuke! I was busy yesterday so I didnt have the time to get back but I really do appreciate it! To respond to your question, I've been on a noir kick! Big Heat, Laura, Double Indemnity, The Third Man, Strangers on a Train and lots more Hitchcock! I also just saw Stalker and Solaris for the first time a couple weeks back and I adored them! Mirror may still be my favorite Tarkovsky, but the ideas behind The Zone the Solaris Ocean are two of the coolest concepts in all of film! And lastly, I went with my mom & younger brother to see Nosferatu last year and it was awesome. Highly recommend it! Happy holidays once again!

Greetings from Ohio, Daisuke! I first saw this great film on the streaming channel a few years ago. With a performance from Jean Brooks that’s truly gripping in her almost subdued expression of haunted fatalism and the story’s sinister and nihilistic tones that I found boldly cynical for its time period, this film has really stuck with me ever since that first viewing. Thanks again for treating us with yet another delightful and insightful analysis of this great, under-seen film! Cheers, friend!

So well done and excellent observation my friend. Please keep adding all these great points! You are making wonderful contributions. Warmest regards

I saw this movie in the theater as a new release when I lived in Germany. It made a memorable impression on me at the time, as I was pretty young when I saw it. I haven’t watched it since then, so I may have to get this. I tend to only buy physical disks if they include special features, especially an audio commentary track.

I’ve had mostly criticism for Criterion in recent years, but I have to give them full credit for this fantastic double feature release!

As a Pole, I will add a deeper cultural context. The title of the film and novel comes from a Norwid's poem, a passage of which is read by Krystyna as an inscription on cenotaph and finished from memory by Maciek. The poem from 1866 refers to the self-immolation of Karol Levittoux imprisoned in the Warsaw citadel in 1841. Andrzejewski's novel has a much more extensive plot, but is less sensational. translating the book into a very expressive film language is undoubtedly Wajda's great achievement. despite a certain amount of communist propaganda, 'Ashes and Diamonds' along with 'Kanał' are part of the rehabilitation of the 'Home Army', the largest underground organization of WW II, possible only since 1955. For broader acknowledgement , one had to wait until Morgenstern's tv-series 'Kolumbowie' from 1970. btw. Morgenstern was an assistant director in the 'Kanał'

Fun fact: I actually live on the very same road that is featured in the last shot of the film; the scene takes place only a couple miles down the street from my home. I’ve driven down it myself many times, and I always think of the characters riding off in the same way when I do. Hearing the filmmakers talk about and show the location in the supplements was quite exciting for me! As always, another fantastic discussion, Daisuke. This will undoubtedly go down as one of my favorite releases of the year!

Arguably, I would say Barbra Streisand in FUNNY GIRL is the most striking cinematic debut I've ever seen in my lifetime. I saw this as a teenager when it opened in 70mm at the MIdland Theatre in Kansas City, MO., which was one of the most opulent movie palaces of it's day. The "Don't Rain on My Parade" number right before the intermission is one of the most memorable musical moments ever put on film. I was so glad when Streisand got an Oscar for her outstanding performance, which, by the way, she shared with Katherine Hepburn, who also won that year for THE LION IN WINTER. This Criterion edition of Sony's amazing restoration of FUNNY GIRL is superb! The audio quality of this disc is proof that 70mm magnetic six-track sound developed in the 1950's was a match for any of the newer film-sound formats that were introduced by Dolby and Lucasfilm during the STAR WARS years.

Fun fact: in the book, one of the incidents that has led Bell to conclude that the world is getting worse is the recent murder of a federal judge. He is referring to a real life murder perpetrated by Woody Harrelson’s father.
@Dr.Thirteen-bb1ub2 күн бұрын
I don't know if that's "fun" per se, but interesting. I wonder if Woody being cast was a huge coincidence or the Coens being darkly mischievous.

I admit I was a bit disappointed about the transfer. But I know the film has a dissaturated look, so that's how it should be.

Ryuichi Sakamoto plays such an ominous villain here, not to mention his indispensable contribution to the absolutely epic musical score (along with David Byrne and Cong Su). I had known about Manchukuo and its puppet emperor long before this film, but this sparked an exploration of Puyi and that era in more depth - which says something very good about a film that manages to spur further research on the background. Just a gorgeous movie all-around that is well worth watching and owning in 4k (especially noted the better sound quality on that one).

One of the few films I remember that deconstructs the notion that a protagonist has "plot armor" and nothing unfortunate will happen to them before the story is over.

Thank you Daisuke. This movie is one of my favorites. I just got their bluray edition of it about the middle of last year. I was lucky enough to have seen it in the theater when it came out. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season. A great sound track too! Looks like I got it a bit too early. Doh... Still a great movie. Also have a very Happy New Year!
