For 30 years I’ve followed both Union and League - and love both with a passion. But there’s something about a certain type of Union player (but never the really GOOD ones) that likes to reduce sporting rivalries to class ones. If you are dull enough to do so, probably best not to be too proud of it.

I think if you react like that to a joke then you're probably a bit too full of yourself, or perhaps to sensitive about your working class roots. I agree with the author though that he's a world class 10, and for better of worse I think it's part of what has driven him to achieve so highly. I don't get the impression Farrel goes out of his way to wind up other players though, like some others do.

@dalenewton9697
@dalenewton9697 6 ай бұрын
@@jb9433 You mean black people are too 'sensitive' about jokes about their race? Perhaps. I think the majority aren't, but a certain number have been brainwashed by political correctness and similar doctrines and perhaps mistakenly equate race humour as 'racism' as a result. The first problem with even discussing such a view though is that these people tend not to have, or operate, a clearly defined notion of what racism means themselves in my experience. If you take a traditional (and meaningful in my view) interpretation of racism as, say, 'an act which harms the interests of a person or group defined along racial lines which is also rooted in ignorance/misinformation', racial humour obviously does not equate, ipso facto, to this, and in my experience the number of people who hold to that view after 5 minutes of conversation and actually reflecting thoughtfully on the coherence of such a view is very low. This is essentially the tacit argument made by political correctness, woke thought, and such doctrines though (that certain negative race references in humor, song, art, and other types of expression ARE ipso facto expressions of a bigoted view on race or some other issue, regardless the author's actual views/sentiment). It is an attempt to impose meaning upon the speech of the speaker, rather than receive meaning from them - a tyranny of ideas. Ironically, this also makes political correctness a form of bigotry(!), or at best, pre-judgementalism. Most people sense this bigotry and hypocrisy and reject it, which is why political correctness started out, and largely remains, a top-down doctrine. There will always be propagandists who defend such doctrines (knowing them to be bogus of course), and also some indoctrinated individuals who actually believe them to be valid in some sense, but ultimately I think both are a small minority. The over-representation of such doctrines and their proponents in the narrative/media/news is largely explained, I think, by its political function and utility to the ruling class ultimately (the rich), chiefly as a misdirection from the biggest social injustice and root cause of most suffering - WEALTH inequality. In a word, they're used as divisive sideshows.

Farrell is nothing as bad as people make him out to be. There have been a number of incidents one could count on one hand where he should have been punished but wasn’t. Something you could say about every player. The reason his sticks out is because ONE of those moments (South Africa 2017) was during a crucial moment in the game which should have led to SA getting a shot to win the game. The guy has made thousands of legal tackles in his career, but of course we should judge him for minuscule number that weren’t.

I think it is about time people questioned Farrell's attitude towards and contribution to the game of union. I see him as a good goal kicker and that is all. He has nothing like the quality or bravery of Wilkinson, nothing like the game management of Ford or Andrew and in comparison to Smith he has no instinct for the game. He is so far behind every other international 10 in the Northern hemisphere it is almost laughable, even Biggar looks classy in comparison, and when it comes to the Southern hemisphere, he is simply not even in the conversation.

What's wrong with his attitude. He is an elite athlete who captains his team , maintains standards. He isn't afraid to tell players what for if they are not doing drills right . I am really not sure what your idea of an attitude for a professional rugby player with a leadership role . His career in the game is impressive. 2 tours with Lions, over 100 caps with England captaining 50 odd. European Championship titles , premiership titles , grand slams, rec finalist and 3rd highest scorer in international rugby. Likely to overtake JW by the start of the RWC 2013. I think he is up there with the top tier 10's having to play out of position at centre. Not sure what you have against Bigger but to suggest Farrell isn't instinctive when he is probably the best distributor in the game. It's ok not to like him but I think he stacks up well with most other 10's in the game.
