I know this is old news, but this was my first time watching this. I'm grateful that the camera man kept filming, there was some good lessons learned. Everyone kept calm and worked together. This experience gave me a greater awareness and I will be changing my first aid kit due to this incident. Thank you so much for sharing! Very happy things turned out so well!

Hey guys, surgeon here and I'll say you guys did a pretty darn good job with what you had... The only thing I would say is that you should have used a belt or even the cut up game bag right off the bat to make an actual tourniquet around the leg above the level of the wound (looks like you could have done it right below the level of the knee). Then with the bleeding halted by the tourniquet, expose the wound and figure out exactly the extent of the damage. Get exposure, never hesitate to cut those pants off to see what you're working with. From there you can wash the wound with clean water and pack it with the most sterile thing you have or apply quick clot, then secure the wound with the dressings you wrapped around it. When you have things under control, release the tourniquet and monitor for how effective your dressings actually are. If you did a good job exposing and packing, it should be stable. That's just my two cents. Glad he's okay and again, you guys did a great job. Oh btw, the maximum time you should leave a tourniquet on in about 2 hours before your run into irreversible damage to the muscle and nerves but when it really comes down to it, if you had to, it's life over limb. Glad this situation turned out alright. Enjoying the content!

I'm curious what you think about using super glue in a situation like this. Would it be beneficial to super glue an active bleed, and does super glue have any impact on stitches or surgery on the wound if it were necessary?

Jeremiah H you wouldn’t want to close the wound without irrigating and cleansing it first. Standard super glue can be very irritating to the skin and possibly complicate healing. Leave the wound closing to the professionals. Just stabilize it and get to the hospital.

I kind of did a Readers Digest viewing of this but a couple comments. I give you guys huge props for dealing with an under control (under control because you kept it under control) situation yourself rather than dialing 911 at the first hint of trouble. Clearly you had knowledgeable people nearby and resources available, all to your favor and you used them. Some of your viewers need to bear in mind that cell phone service is non existent in vast areas of the western US, especially in mountains and canyon areas since cell phones work on line of sight, or near line of sight between phone and cell tower. Don't ever assume you have cell service in an area until proven it exists. Lastly, as a former EMT and current Marine SAR volunteer it would have been good to have him sipping or drinking some fluids. Even though the blood loss wasn't life threatening, again because of your first aid and the nature of the wound, the liquids would have been extra insurance against shock and helped calm the victim and even the care givers.

Law enforcement officer here. You guys did great. Consider adding a sucking chest wound triangle bandage to your kit. If someone takes a rifle round and survives the shot they are still in serious danger of dying. One risk is a sucking chest wound. Basically the lungs collapse and the torso fills with air keeping the lung from expanding. A triangle patch will help keep the victim breathing which helps a lot when trying not to die.

ELK 101 Team, highly suggest a small trauma kit. I have one I got from Personal Survival Solutions who are retired Army Special Forces Medics. They deal North American Rescue products. It's called a bleeder kit and has a tourniquet, compression bandage, compression gauze, shears, gloves, survival blanket, permanent marker for marking time tourniquet was applied, and instructions should you need them. Would be very useful whether you had help or by yourself. Weighs approximately 1 pound and is in compressed vacuum sealed packaging. Understand needing to cut weight and size, just don't believe in doing it in this area when you are going to be so far away from help or vehicles.

This is scary. Brings back an incident bowhunting elk several years ago in Washington State. As I was pulling my truck into a pull off area to glass elk from a popular spot, a truck was already there. As I got out of my truck, a young guy came running to his truck and yelled to me,” I spotted a herd of elk”! As he proceeds to start his truck, he then shoved it into reverse and instantly starts screaming. I ran to his door, only to see blood running everywhere. This guy had his bow propped up in the passenger seat floor board area. He had one of them Martin 8 arrow quivers that had the 2 clips on the outside of the hood to hold two additional arrows, for carrying a blunt or field point. This hunter had put broadheads in those clips! When he excitedly shoved the stick shift into reverse, he shoved one of the broadheads into his wrist. Luckily I had a first ad kit and we managed to get the bleeding under control. This guy was extremely scared. If this guy would have been by himself I do believe he would have been in real trouble as he was panicking terribly and did not have a first ad kit.

In an emergency type situation, having too many people trying to help can make the situation dangerous. The injured hunter had 2 companions who had the situation under control and were working through their first aid tool kits just fine. Often times in situations such as this you will see everyone try and help all at once and they end up counter acting one another or arguing about what method to use. You guys stayed calm and David was also alert and able to help too. great job all around. Nothing bad can really be said about anyones actions.

Dwane Hudson Get medical training and buy the major things. Get a Gen 7 CAT Tourniquet, and Gauze (hemostatic gauze is great too as it has a chemical in in that clots blood). Pressure bandages are good too. If you buy one thing it should be a tourniquet; it’s like $20-30 and if you need one their is no substitute. If an artery is severed you have 90 seconds until you bleed out (about 30 seconds until you black out (and if your by yourself you basically have 30 seconds until your helpless). TQ goes high and tight and can be left on for 6-8 hours without damage. Other things you can buy are chest seals (if you have a puncture anywhere from the waist to the chest, you slap this sticky barrier on top of the wound. I could go in and on but get medical training and buy some trauma equipment. All of these medical supplies can be found at North American Rescue.

In my 50 years bow hunting i have had an arrow come out of my quiver twice , once when turning in tight brush a limb pushed it out , the other one it was loose in the quiver and i heard it rattle against other shafts ..When i went to small diameter arrows over the years from 1994 to 2006 went smaller again with arrow tech , i went to full carbon and Easton FMJ which was smaller yet ,the arrow gripper made from rubber i had to replace it , one cannot have loose arrows in your quiver ..I have seen hunters stop every half hour and push the arrows back up under the hood as they were slipping down .. Not good ... You did a great job filming all of this repair and medical treatment , glad you did , other hunters should watch this ...Well done you guys , you got your partner safely out of the forest through networking and skills ..

Right on guys. Consider putting together a trauma specific kit, and a separate first aid kit. Use the Keep It Simple Stupid principle. You don’t want to be digging through a first aid kit when trying to control massive hemorrhage. Checkout @darkangelmedical or other reputable shop. They have prepackaged gear and excellent training! I took their trauma class this fall and it was eye opening.

Pressure bandages like Israeli bandages, a turniquet, and a splint will be sufficient for most traumas maybe consider an NPA or just buy a prebuilt IFAC which if you add tampons and chitosan (quickclot) would be what a soldier carries. Then think about a bigger more extensive vehicle first aid kit.

We had an episode similar to this not with a guy but a horse. We were packed in 10+miles and the horse tripped fell to his front knees and when he went to stand back up smacked his hoof right at the hair line which has a good blood supply. We did about the same thing as you guys did with the game bags and luco tape black tape and some bush craft ingenuity lighter and pine sap as super glue. The lesson we learned is always have a sat phone or something, super glue, quick cloat and a tourniquet. Got the blood stopped after 10-15 minutes found a cold spring near buy pulled the wraps soaked and cleaned out the wound. Re applied dressings and stayed up all night tending the horse making sure he was getting good food and water. Distributeed the weight he was carrying to hunters and other horses and I lead him out drove him down and to the vet. Everyone learned from the experience and had a great hunt from there on out.

This year i started packing and using cutproof gloves for use in breaking down a bull figuring it would be so easy to cut yourself during that time and that would be one of the most likely times for an accident to happen. They only cost about $10 and they actually helped give some grip and keep your hands warmer too. They were a good investment and you can wash them and use them for years. I think a half roll of duct tape would be good to carry too.

I had my own dummy moment this elk season and went to the ER after the loaded meat cart fell over on my ankle. The ER nurse told me they survive off of hunters and hikers where they are located and there was a hunter in the ER the night before who cut themselves while skinning their 6pt. The two positives...they were ok and they got a 6pt before the accident. For me my tag went unfilled because of my dummy moment. Yours is a smart addition as my latex gloves were cheapos and although helped some, they still had holes and leaks by the time I was done helping our 60 year old hunting buddy by doing most of the bending over and reaching up to detach the upper cavity organs and stuff. He was being nice and letting me learn by helping all I wanted. I swear it was like a pool in there. It was my first time elk hunting and first experience gutting a skinning an elk. Of course my whole arm was pretty much a bloody sticky mess so my cheapo gloves didn't really help me much anyway.

I carry a turniquet and twoquick clots along with other first aid in my bag. I huntalone and I hunt a lot of public land. I also keep an extra fully charged battery. So I can charge my phone if needed. And a lighter.

I learned while mining underground. A turniquet can keep u from bleeding to death .and it usually kills the affected limb. Requiring an amputation.

Of all the new content being released this season with Elk101, BRO/LOF2.0, Hushin, "Traditions", etc - this episode and subsequent podcast will no doubt be the most beneficial piece of content I'll consume all year. The very moment David yelled, "Corey, I cut my leg." my mind raced and as I felt my anxiety level rise... the vulnerability I felt in just watching this unfold meant I knew I am not prepared to handle a medical emergency in the backwoods... So I watched intently, and vowed to improve upon my own skills and equipment before entering the woods next season. I think everyone did a great job. I appreciated the deliberate attempt to remain calm, think before you act and act slowly - haste makes waste! Utilizing the game bag and lighter were both very resourceful ideas. Well done by all. In our elk camp we always believe a successful trip is one where no-one was hurt. And if ever an event such as this should arise in the future, I may very well have Dave, Corey and Donnie and the commenters below to thank for my preparedness as I harken back to this very moment.

Civil War field surgeon here. For all intents and purposes, you guys handled it pretty well. The only thing I would have done differently is once you had the tourniquet in place just below the knee, I would have then administered a shot of whiskey to the victim and then continued to remove the leg with a rusty saw just below the knee. Make sure you give the victim a small piece of tree limb to bite down on while you are doing your sawing. Having the other guy there to hold him down is a plus. I, of course, wouldn't bother to wash my hands or use gloves as time is of the essence. Otherwise, you did the best with what you had. Good job.

Shit happens. I HIGHLY suggest a tourniquet and even an Israeli bandage. I edc a tourniquet and the Israeli bandages are miracle workers on their own.

A tourniquet in the hands of someone that is not educated on the use of it quickly turns into a amputated limb. If it is left on to long the limb dies and have to be amputated. And in this case the beeding was not so bad so a dressing was just fine. If it is a bad beeding like an artery a tourniquet is fine to use as you'r life is more important than loosing a fot or a arm, but on small bleedings like this it is more of a danger than a help.

Wow! The irony of this injury is that just a few hours before he took a broadhead to the leg, there was a near miss to the abdomen in the dark. Not only did episodes 3 and 4 drive home the necessity of caring for our gear, but I also substantially expanded my own medical kit for the field, especially since I often hunt alone. Self rescue in either of these situations would have been highly unlikely. I'm sure thankful you guys were there for him.

Shaner rc yeah they are really good for controlling the bleeding and easy to use too. We had those in the military coupled with CAT tourniquets another damn good tool if you get a serious wound, super small package and really quick and easy to use also no real reason why not to carry one. AND another plus to the CAT is that you can apply it to yourself with one hand if the other arm is wounded.

This is why I always carry an Israeli bandage, TQ and a clotting sponge just in case. The old adage of, "If you can make holes, you need to be able to plug them as well". The only bad decision is to do nothing. Good use of what was on hand. You could have used the game bag as a compression bandage too... cross the game bag over the wound... wrap and repeat. This will increase pressure directly over the wound. My dad used to teach first responder courses for back country hunting guides and his fellow Sheriff's deputies... it's amazing how much you learn as a guinea pig! I live in Montana and it's always a useful tool to have some form of training. See you in the tall grass!!!
