What's inside this cool rock from northern Ontario copper mine? I stuck it in muriatic acid to find out and also wondered if it might contain gold. email: meminerrocks@gmail.com

I wouldn't put this rocks in acid, piryte (or chalcopiryte - i suppose that was chalcopiryte) looks better when polished, this hematite rosetts are great, but with so thin slabs specimens are also really small.

@meMiner2 жыл бұрын
Some rocks won't shine, but we can figure this out. Some questions: What kind of rocks were they? What kind of polish did you use? How long did you polish? Did you clean the barrel and rocks between steps?

I wonder why they call it muriatic acid instead of hydrochloric, its the same acid lol. Also wondering if you rubbed some of the 'hematite' from this vid on a plate, would it retain leaving a red trail after being immersed in the acid?
@meMiner2 жыл бұрын
Muriatic means pertaining to salt (brine). In Latin it is is "acidum salis" (spirits of salts). I am not sure how the hematite would retain colour. Be fun to find out

That was fun. Did you use a steel ball tumbler to reduce the rock or a hammer with the sample in an old sock. The calcite was really bubbling. Was the green malachite? Keep the goodness coming. Be happy, safe and stay healthy 😷⚒
@meMiner2 жыл бұрын
The crumbs in the gold pan had fallen off during the etch. The green looked to me to be copper oxide. I couldn't see any actual copper in these samples. It was from a productive copper mine, so maybe when I go this summer I can find samples of malachite or copper ore.

You need to roast/oxidize the pyrite to see if any gold is locked in the sulfide. Beautiful hematite boxworks in those specimens.
@GemstonePhilosophy2 жыл бұрын
I could see some really good cabs cut from that material. Id imagine thin slabs would need to be stabilized, but would be cool to see those dendritic pyrite formations captured in a jewelry piece.
@meMiner2 жыл бұрын
I tried a thin one and it fell apart. So yes, I will either cut thicker or stabilize with Epoxy 30

@isaacjanzen2346 Жыл бұрын
next time put your pyrite in boiling nitric acid till the red fumes stop it will cause the metals to separate and leave you with maybe micro gold dust depending on type of pyrite
@meMiner Жыл бұрын
Interesting suggestion, but I don't play with nitric. Scary stuff.
@isaacjanzen2346 Жыл бұрын
@@meMiner well you can always try roasting the stuff after you crush it up and try panning it to see if any gold or send it out to be processed by an assayer

I find it intriguing that there's gold in some pirite and not in others. Honestly, don't make sense to me but I'm not a geologist either lol. What is your understanding on it.
@meMiner2 жыл бұрын
One saying is "gold rides an iron horse" which for placer miners means look for gold the same place you find black sands and other heavies. For hard rock, they sometimes say "gold wears an iron hat" which is usually a oxidized rusty cap over a deeper vein. In all cases, either the gold is there or more typically, it isn't (at least not in economic quantity), which is why in an area of mineralization you must test and sample. The mineralization is an indication of where to investigate.
@chrisfrench21302 жыл бұрын
@@meMiner thank you that totally makes sense,reading it.

I enjoyed the video, and watching that acid in action. Is there any Malachite, or interesting copper minerals at that mine? What is happening with the labradorite that you were going to cab?
@meMiner2 жыл бұрын
I haven't been to that mine (yet). The rock was found by a buddy and cut by me. I looked over other rocks that he had taken and none looked like malachite to me. I think he focused on ones that had pyrite. I was looking for the labradorite and/or peristerite earlier this week and have no idea where I put either one,. I was disappointed when I cut the labradorite, so didn't pay attention afterwards. I should have peristerite in a few places. They might actually be outside under snow.
@jameswelch10542 жыл бұрын
@@meMiner Is Peristerite, more like labradorite, sunstone, or moonstone? I have heard it described in 3 different ways.
@meMiner2 жыл бұрын
@@jameswelch1054 Peristerite is a moonstone and is closer to labradorite because both are on feldspar. It looks more like sunstone (to me) but moonstone is on albite. At least, that is how I separate them
