someone's definitely mentioned it already but the reason ranpo wasn't in most of it was that in the beginning he puts all his snacks in the safe in preparation, because shibusawa's ability makes all non-gifted people disappear. so he predicted that he was going to disappear and stashed his snacks away ahead of time, and that's why he reappears at the end (to formally show us that it's properly over).

Everytime the author needs to defeat a global level threat he just drops the Chuuya bomb, and i love that for him Edit: so I'm gonna be that person and tell him Chuuya's Corruption was nullified with the punch to Dazai's face (if I remember correctly, it's always on, so on contact it nullifies everything) so Dazai wasn't stoping corruption while caressing his cheek. He was just being gay. (Although is probably just a headcanon, we can't deny there were other places he could've chose, but no, his cheek it is)

(Also yeah I think your right it was mentioned that the knife itself was pretty much unless if not for the poison on it. My major question for that part is just why did gem-nameicantspellinenglish-guy choose a poison that is effective but don’t kill-you kill you, unless that was actually also in his plan and he slowed the process of dying to a point of near death and no one suspects but curable and THEN hid the pill in his mouth)

Actually I think Dazai in bsd has amazing similarities to real life dazai and good parallels to No Longer Human. The difference is just that in bsd we see the outsider perspective while No Longer Human is very personal. Some similarities I really like include: Dazai joining the mafia and becoming very respected among them quickly (like the protagonist of No Longer Human joined a communist party that was illegal and became a core member) Oda, Dazai and Ango knowing eachother in real life and the photo they took actually existing. (Also Oda dying shortly after) His very nonchalant humor. In the novels all the characters that describe Dazai, do it in a very similar way to how No Longer Human describes its main character. Like something was deeply wrong but you cannot quite put a finger on it. The way he constantly talks with women. In bsd he litteraly flirts with every and any woman he comes across. The double suicide thing is because real Dazai died in a double suicide. In No Longer Human the main charcter is described as awfully smart. To the point he passes his exams in uni with ease despite never going to any lectures or learning. The list goes on, but those were the things I could recall from the top of my head. This last moments of this movie is literally just a soukoku dump on our heads because :- 1) Chuyya risks his life to save dazai without second thought despite knowing that corruption can kill him if not stopped in time. 2) Dazai's ability is active at all times, meaning that when Chuyya punched him corruption was already nullified so Dazai was basically cupping Chuyya's cheek for no damn reason aside from being gay. 3) Chuyya looses all lucidity when using corruption and dosen't even remember himself so him screaming Dazai's name during corruption just means that he thinks about Dazai even while his brain is switched off. 4) Dazai knows the fog dosen't affect Chuyya's ability but hs still holds Chuyya's head between his legs just for the sake of being gay. 5) Dazai literally saying, "You used corruption believing that I'd save you, how beautiful" 6) In the manga, Chuyya actually says "I won't be satisfied until I give that idiot Dazai a blow" when he talks about punching him.

A little about the influence of the real life authors on the characters: quite a few (though not all) of the relationships between the characters have been swapped i.e. irl Dazai looked up to Akutagawa, ranpo was a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe (his pen name being the Japanese pronunciation of Edgar Allan Poe) and Chuuya had a habit of being a lot meaner to dazai than dazai was to him (mackerel was a name he did actually use for him often iirc). Some haven’t been flipped like Dazai, Ango and Oda being friends and drinking buddies (again iirc) Obviously some have no relation and I’m sure there are more relations between them that I can’t think of right now but it is interesting what affects the real authors had on the characters.

I read No Longer Human in the process of doing a history project because the teacher said we could do it on anything we wanted and I decided that since I was fixated on Bungo Stray Dogs I was going to do how Japanese literature was impacted by the cultural and historical events and shifts that happened during and after the Meiji Restoration up until the 1960s. I literally had to talk to my therapist about it not because I found it super depressing but because I related to Yozo's feelings of isolation from people and anxiety around people and new things and all that. Literally cried in the middle of the starbucks I was reading it at when I got to the part where he was institutionalized because like, it's a total mood. Like it's one thing to feel inhuman or different from everyone around you and it's a totally different one to be officially declared it and that comes with both a sense of relief that you weren't imagining it or exaggerating it but also a sense of dread because now everyone knows and you can't hide it behind a mask anymore. Anyway, my personal opinion, probably tinged with more than a little projection, Yozo isn't any sort of sociopath or psychopath, he's autistic and there's some sort of body dysmorphia. Unless the prologue is from the same point of view as the epilogue, in which case just the autistic thing. And also, you know, the heaping helping of depression, anxiety, and self-medication related addiction that goes along with trying to function with those things.

As someone who’s autistic myself, I knew within the first few paragraphs that he’s autistic, but so many people seem to miss it. It’s one of those books that people tend to either love or hate, and I think the reason so many people don’t like it or just find it edgy and depressing is because they can’t relate at all to the main character. I’ve never felt so seen and understood by a book though. The way he describes masking and not understanding social situations and just the level of depression and isolation all of this causes him because he doesn’t know how to connect with people is so very real. It’s probably my very favorite book (tho to be fair I don’t read much)

Chuuya sounds much better in Japanese! His voice actor is actually the singer in the band Granrodeo, who does the openings for seasons 1 and 3 as well as Dead Apple, and his screams are one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard. Also, I don’t know if you caught it, but while in Corruption form, Chuuya can actually create black holes, which is what he was throwing at the dragon, so it’s just an extension of his gravity ability!

On the topic of reading Danny you should definitely read StromBringer. It is probably the best BSD book. It’s about chuuya’s backstory and it super interesting. If you do read it I would suggest reading it after season 3 because there are some scenes in the backstory eps of season 3 that become before the book. It’s a cool book👍

Don’t worry, Danny, the beginning of Season 3 covers a lot of the questions you have such as: - WTF is Chuuya’s Corruption form when it’s clearly not JUST gravity control. - How Dazai and Chuuya met. - How Mori became the leader of the Port Mafia. To elaborate on Mori though, his Vita Sexualis ability is basically a protector entity a la Demon Snow or Golden Demon except he can configure its appearance and personality to be what he’s attracted to. In this case, a prepubescent bratty girl who hates him with a sadistic personality. Yes, he’s unfortunately a canonical pedophile. They based Elise off the 17 year old love interest in a book the real Mori Ōgai-sensei wrote called ‘The Dancing Girl’. Can’t wait to see how you feel about the way things unfold! Dostoyevsky actually plays a huge part in the franchise - to the point where the manga is still dealing with the fallout of his bullshit. Good luck! I don't know whether you already know this, but the relationship between characters in BSD is the opposite of their relationship in real life. In BSD, Dazai is Akutagawa's senior but in real life, Dazai was pretty much an Akutagawa fanboy. He once wrote a 3 meters letter to a judge and begged the judge to give him the Akutagawa Literature Award because no one was a bigger fanboy than he was.

minor note but the issue with the chuuya scream in the dragon fight is that chuuya's voice in the english dub is a lot more strained (which i get is a stylistic choice) whereas in the original japanese dub he speaks in a much deeper voice so the raised pitch of the scream is much less awkward compared to the english dub one also his japanese voice actor Taniyama Kishō is also the lead singer in a rock band which probably helps (they did the openings for the first season, this movie and season three) so his screams also have a fun vibratto thing going on, id recommend watching the japanese version of the scene its neat

It took me watching Dead Apple twice to actually understand its purpose lol. Also, about Ranpo, if you noticed back at the beginning of the movie, he starts putting all of his snacks in a safe and I'm 100% sure he guessed what was going to happen haha. And about No Longer Human, it's very much like Yozo's diary and I think the most impactful sentence in the whole book was in the very last chapter where one of the characters is talking to Dazai and says something along the lines of Yozo having been an "angel" which could mean a few things. It could have some sort of symbolism that we're not all as bad as our inner critic thinks we are and that Yozo is an unreliable narrator (albeit still an abhorrent human being regardless), or that Yozo truly had a full complete mask as the "fool" he portrayed himself as. And although the book doesn't quite match up with the Dazai we see at THIS point, if I'm remembering correctly, I THINK (without giving spoilers) it makes more and more sense later. Also, I am SO excited to see more reactions to Dostoevsky. Apologies for the paragraph😂

I would say that reading the novels & poems that are the basis for the characters' abilities would help here. There are allegories sprinkled throughout the series. Also, the flashback episodes are based off of the Bungo Stray Dogs' light novels. Fun fact: Season 1 Episodes 6-7 are based off of a light novel where Kunikida & Dazai are on a case that's Dazai's entrance exam. That's why Atsushi was an observer in those episodes, he wasn't in the agency yet when the novel took place. Also, thanks for being one of the only KZbinrs who talks about this series. You're reactions are hilarious & I've had a lot of similar thoughts. This show needs more love.

They cut off a lot from the manga in the anime, but I think Dazai's character has more similarities with this book's mc in the manga. Especially since in the manga, Dazai is a raging sexist, to the point where he fucks a nurse in an empty hospital room just to get his phone back from her, much like his irl counterpart. Idk how inappropriate it mightve been for a TV adaptation but considering its a seinen series, leaving out that part really pissed me off. Also in that scene where they rescue Q, Chuuya says how Dazai had played around with lots of women and left them all heartbroken. Ik the fandom loves Dazai to the moon and back, but I think we all need to accept the fact that he IS overall a shitty person.

He's a piece of shit, but I don't think he's sexist per se. He's equally shitty to all people. He's just not into men, or at least not as much as he is into women. He hasn't shown any interest in other men outside of flirting(?) with fyodor and aggressively bully-flirting with chuuya, and I personally don't see skk as romantic because they are so incredibly toxic together. Funny as hell, but also extremely toxic. And the bitter divorcees dynamic is funnier anyways. Idk how anyone can watch or read bsd and genuinely not realise that dazai is a massive piece of shit. Mentally ill as fuck and he does try to do the right thing most of the time (in the present day at least), but still, piece of shit. I don't think there's a single person in the main cast he doesn't owe at least 15 apologies to. And also that there's a BIG difference between liking a character as a character and liking them as a person. Dazai is my favourite character in bsd, but he's not close behind Mr Pedo Man when it comes to my least favourite person in bsd. I really hope that Akutagawa gets an arc dealing with the trauma dazai inflicted on him someday, he deserves one. Shin skk breaks the cycle or whatever. If he even survives his current. uh. ordeal.

Maybe I'm mistaken since dead apple is kinda a fever dream like level of comprehension and remembering for me, but non-ability users literally disappeared from Yokohama while the fog was here, so technically Ranpo wasn't even here. Also for Chuuya's (and actually everyone's) screams and voice, they are (in my opinion of course) better in japanese (and you don't have that accent for Fyodor), and yes Chuuya screams Dazai's name while in corruption, a state when he literally isn't capable of logical thinking, so the only thing he thinks about when he isn't really conscious is Dazai. Also I haven't read no longer human but for what I've been told it's way darker when you know of Osamu Dazai's real life story since it's partially an autobiography.

The dagger stabbing the apple is a representation of “apple suicide”, and apple suicide most likely means to give into despair and knowingly walk into one's death.

Not only is bsd obviously is inspired by lit authors and their works, but I feel Asagiri took his time to make it anatomically and physiologically accurate as well. Surprisingly, it works a lot of the time. It's better seen in the manga and novels, but there are some very obvious examples of anatomy terms used. For those who read volume 20 of the manga series, there is a very obvious point in it where someone refers to the carotid sinus and vagus nerve. And how they described it is physiologically works. I can't speak for all of it, but I can speak for what those structures are at their basic level. Another example is in volume 18 where they describe some anatomy of the ear. And the scene looks really obsurd, but from my knowledge at least, it works. And if bsd isn't using anatomy terms, it describes things that physiologically fit. A good example is in the first chapter of the bsd beast novel. It points out how someone got shot through the leg and they fell. It seems like they fell due to lose of balance, but actually, they fell because their leg muscles got real damaged. And because your leg muscles are the one of the strongest structures in your body, if they were to get ruptured, those muscles won't be able to support the weight of your upper body and you would fall. The wording in the novel even suggest that And as someone who is studying a&p in college, even with my little knowledge, a lot of the characters techniques and injuries surprisingly work. And it just makes me appreciate the series a lot more haha

I'm going to talk only about the characters. As you said, Danny, Dostoyevsky thinks that Crime and Punishment are two halfs of the whole. Dazai, on the other hand, thinks that they're opposites. Now onto the characters. Fyodor is certain that he and Dazai are one and the same. Part of this is true. Both of them do bad things in order to achieve their goals. Both of them don't show their true selves and are exellent manipulators. Osamu, however, believes that they're completely different. That's also true. Dazai trusts people and he actually has a "warm heart" and this can't be said about Dostoyevsky, who only uses people as his puppets. And of course, Dazai wants to protect every world he's in (I'm looking at you, BEAST readers) while Fyodor wants to destroy every world he's in

Dead apple is actually not written by the original author of Bungou Stray Dogs. That’s why the plot (imo) is messy and out of the place. Although the original author was also involved in the making of the movie, he was there probably only to kind of supervise(?) or to suggest important things to be added for the world building. Idk if you’d be interested Danny, but I really recommend if you try out the Light Novels once you finished the anime! They are ultimately way better. The LN adaptation in the anime cut off a lot of stuff that makes the “mystery” aspect of the series shines more, and we got to dive deeper in the character’s complex thoughts. For me, they’re pretty well written. I so much prefer the LNs the author made tbh. Would love to hear your thoughts on them!

Ummmm, asagiri was the one who had the final say on the plot and shiz, though he wasn't in the main meetings and the like. The light novel was written by a colleague of his, with his approval of course. It adapted the movie It's the manga that was actually written by him. He added more details and context to help explain the plot better. Like the full story of Chuuya and Dazai vs shibusawa, and others. So the novel wasn't written by asagiri, I just wanted to clarify that 👍

@@cjstevenson143 yes the novel wasn’t written by Asagiri, it was also written long after the movie came out. Although Asagiri has the final say, in this kind of industry, it’s common for film/animation adaptation from studios to add extra fan service and fillers for extra profits. Asagiri can’t really do anything about that because it does helps promote the bsd original materials (Manga and the Light Novels). So I don’t really find any point in the movie other than to pump up more money for the studio since a lot of Asagiri’s own ideas for the movie are removed.

Dead apple had a lot of technical stuff, with singularities and such which make up a big part of bsd lore especially in the novels. I don't think bones could come up with that stuff on their own , so asagiri definitely had a big role to play in the plot at least. The fanservicy stuff was most likely by bones for promotion like you said. But in the manga which was written by asagiri, the fanservicy stuff wasn't removed, and we got even more than the movie gave us. I agree that bones puts in way more fanservice than necessary, like their obsession with butt shots lol, but I still think it isn't fair to put all the blame on them, as if asagiri protested but was ignored. Just saying 🤷🏾‍♀️........ Sorry for the rant 🤣
