@davkatjenn Жыл бұрын
That is true, but also so sad. After all, isn't it the points of interest that are a big part of going anywhere? And when we see something that interests us it is really beneficial to see a sign or something so that we can find it on a map. I really enjoy the details and Tristan shows us the details. Some of the bloggers whole point seems to be to show how far they can go in a day, not what they can discover and isn't life supposed to be about discovery?

It was called the Shaman cave by the climbers that developed it, it was a very popular crag in the mid 90s with local hard climbers there were many 5.12 and 5.13 routes the one you probably saw was bird of prey that goes across the arch to the middle and still had quick draws hanging on it last time I was there. The place was closed to climbing due to bighorn sheep using the spring in the back of the cave

Interesting! Thanks for sharing, Chris 👍 There were no draws hanging when I visited.

Thank you very much for your excellent videos! You do an excellent job of videography. It is fascinating to watch and learn from your video techniques and creativity. It appears you are alone so you must do a lot of planning, and thinking about creative shots...using tripods, different angles etc. to compose your various shots to make it interesting. I am an old guy that just started to dabble in videography as a retired hobby. I love watching your videos to learn from your techniques. Your commentary is also relaxed and very informative - a skill that I think requires development, but also is just a result of a pleasing personality. That, plus as a more sedentary retired guy, I (and my wife) love watching your adventures, some of which I wouldn't dare try! I must also compliment you on your Tenkara Addict channel. I fly fished my whole life, but in retirement I have gone to Tenkara only. It is more simple and one of those things that makes one think "why didn't I do this earlier?" Plus, the privacy and closeness of small streams makes it more enjoyable. You are definitely filling a creative niche on KZbin and I wish you the best of success and luck! You are doing a great job! I enjoyed your video! When I was stationed in the Air Force in the early 90's in Las Vegas I had an old 1964 Army jeep that I had hauled all the way from Delaware I loved 4 wheeling and exploring the same roads behind Vegas as you were on. I had seen that cave but never hiked up to it, glad you were able to show what it looked like inside! I took the family many times on excursions just to get away from Vegas. It was great to be away from people! You're right about the last portion of the road down to Hwy 93, it was pretty rough! Loved the Yucca and Joshua Trees. On one trip we found some guys trying to set fire to the Joshua trees for some insane reasons, I ran them out of there. Unreal. We didn't have cell phones back then and I believe God was there to help us drive those roads because my CB radio would not have saved us! It's a long way back home if you get stuck or break down!😬

The knife you found was a vehicle escape knife, not a switchblade. If you got the blade out, you might have found it to be strongly hooked. It is for cutting the seat belt. The point on the other end is used to break the side window. They can be a lifesaver if your vehicle ends up in the water and starts sinking.
@SUVRVing Жыл бұрын
It's not. I fixed it up, and there's no hook 👍
@TomCooper Жыл бұрын
@@SUVRVing Either way, it's not a switchblade (they have a blade that swings out like a jackknife, but under spring load).
@EfficientRVer Жыл бұрын
@@TomCooper Switchblades shoot straight out the end, rather than hinge out of a folding knife, where I grew up (NYC area in NJ). There are folders which hinge out, but to a large extent, those have been replaced by ones like the Emerson Wave, which open when your pocket catchs a little hook on the blade. Or just use inertia and a very loose hinge to open and lock with an easily learned motion. The idea behind one that springs straight out (but makes it very easy to see it's illegal), is that you carry it concealed in your hand, and can't possibly cut that hand when opening or closing it, unlike all folding knives.
@TomCooper Жыл бұрын
@@EfficientRVer on the off chance that things have changed over the years, I googled it. Why don't you try the same? The only examples I found of knives as you describe were box cutters with the Switchblade® trademark.

Oh cool, glad to see a video from there. I'm out there a lot since I live only about 8 miles from the visitor center. Makes for a good little drive when I want to get out of the city for a few hours. The military actually wants even more of the refuge than they have now, but the expansion was blocked in 2021 and the Nellis Test and Training Range will be locked in at its current size (around 3 million acres) for 25 years.

Love this road! My wife and I went out there when we lived in Vegas for a stint. There’s also another cave when you’re in Peek a boo canyon. That one sees a lot more traffic being close to the road. We used to live on the very north end of vegas and I could see the south face of gass peak from our house. This video makes me really miss Vegas. Not everyone realizes how much beauty is outside the strip.

The campground at Mormon Pass is really nice now. When I first started going up there over 30 years ago it was just back-country camping. Now there are toilets and designated campsites with tables, tent pads and fire pits. And the best part is it is never busy. You go West of the 95 into the Spring Mountains and it's a madhouse with people everywhere. But hardly anyone comes over here to the Sheep Range. The cave was full of climbing routes/gear in then90s but it has all been removed. If you really want to get away from the crowds take the road up the west side of the Sheep Mtns that comes out at the Pahranagat Wildlife Refuge just south of Alamo. I have been up there many times and literally never seen a single other vehicle on that road when I was there.

At 7:09 you can see two more caves, one to the left and one to the right. As interesting as the middle cave was, I would have explored the other two while I was there. You often mention high ground clearance is needed. Your vehicle has plenty, and has a wheel base of 112 inches. The Rav 4 has a wheel base about 7 inches shorter, at around 105. That gives the Rav 4 more ground clearance than you seem to think it has. I did much of my early exploring in a 66 VW bug, and it had much less ground clearance than your Land Cruiser or a Rav 4, and I never had a problem on roads such as you traveled in this video. One viewer commented that it didn't look like there was enough room for two cars to pass. Many young drivers today don't know how narrow their vehicle is. You see it all the time, when there is an obstacle they leave enough room for a truck to pass between them and the obstacle. Most experienced off roaders know how to make room for two vehicles to pass. The real problem is when one person thinks their vehicle is much wider than it is.
@billharris7235 Жыл бұрын
Approach and departure angles are just as important as clearance. He mentioned Subarus, but they have lousy approach angles due to the Boxer engine placement. Rav 4 would not have an issue here.

I looked for the caves at 7:09 and could see the one on the right. It appears to be in the same geological formation as the big cave that Tristan explored so I would believe that it would be quite similar as the big cave.......but I would have loved to see it too. I suspect that mountain has a good number of small caverns within it.

Every part of that place looked wonderful. From the Joshua trees to the cave to the snow and mountains, it looked amazingly good. That is one thing that you have to say about Las Vegas and you were absolutely correct when you said it; Vegas is so close to so many wonderful southwest desert sites. From Death Valley to Zion to the Grand Canyon and then all of the other things like the wildlife refuge, it is just an amazing place during 3/4ths of the year. Sadly, during the summer months it is just too hot to enjoy them, but not during most of the year.

Another incredible video. It took me a while when I started watching videos like this to realize that you have to do everything twice (or maybe even more times) to get the shots that you get (for instance, going into the cave). So much thought & work put into these videos. I have been to Vegas more times than I care to talk about. On all of my visits I drove from Vegas to Pahrump through the Spring Mountains & was always so impressed by the incredible scenery & the complete difference from Vegas itself within a few miles. Quiet, very few other vehicles, just a great ride. One time I had come from LA & drove west from Pahrump to the edge of Death Valley & then south on the road to Baker. Again mile after mile after mile without any other vehicle. These drives are spiritual for me. Thanks again, Tristan!

Such great stuff. Surprises throughout, amaaaaazing damn cave, interesting and sorta whacky location--loved it. Tristen, I would enjoy more shots of morning and evening light; what you wake up and fall asleep to; even a long slow take on the light changing over each landscape. It has to be amazing and varied. I'd also be interested in shots from the middle of the night in different places--super starry nights, moon-lit nights, what it feels like in the dead quiet of your car in the dark, or even animal sounds. Love your curiosity about everything, and it's amazing just to watch how blammed fit you are scrambling over the craziest terrain. Very helpful to get road condition reports. One thing I fear is getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. What are your safety and emergency resources? You did a show about a guy in a Crosstrek, I think, who mentioned a friend who crashed his bike out in the boondocks and used some emergency service that flew all the way there to get him??

Go in good weather, and turn around if it gets to be too much for the car or your nerves. Go up one size of tire, inflate to max sidewall pressure (I never get tires where that is under 50psi) and stop to examine your route and move any bad rocks. If nervous, add a cheap 30mm or 40mm lift kit plus an additional tire size. My Prius Prime has less clearance than a Prius v, but with oversized tires fully inflated, you would not believe where I've been able to take it. When the car was new, I switched from 195/65R15 to 205/65R15 and also upgraded to XL (extra load) tires requiring higher inflation pressures in exchange for gaining 10 load index numbers (from 89 to 99). I replaced those with even taller 205/70R15. Rubbed one time, not badly, driving through a deep road dip at 45mph. For instance if you have 205/60R16 on your "P RV", you can gain 6mm clearance with 215/60R16, 10.25mm with 205/65R16, 16.75mm with 215/65R16, and 20.5mm with 205/70R16. You may or may not need a small (30mm) lift kit to fit the last one, or possibly the last two. Or more likely they'll fit but might rub if you pull high g's in a road dip or coming down from being airborne. Don't expect Wal-Mart to mount very oversized tires on a Prius, but you can carry in the wheels or find a sympathetic tire guy who deals with lifted pickups, etc.
