I usually love your videos but with this one, I think it puts a lot of people off being vegan in Spain. My mother is from Madrid, and I live in Barcelona/London - I have been vegan for 15 years so living in/out of Spain has not been a problem. Come to Barcelona, being vegan is not an issue at all. Too many options! The last time I went to Madrid, there were many places that either began or were happy to adapt to a vegan meal. Also, it is good to also enjoy food without always trying to imitate fake meat - veg and vegan options are so yummy without "needing" to be "like meat", even when there are some great meat-alternative Spanish companies out there now - Some olive oil, local herbs/spices, and fresh local veg... done lol! Spain has some AMAZING tastes for vegan options. The quality of their non-meat/fish produce will amaze you. In my opinion, the BEST produce (veg/fruits/etc) in Europe that I have tried so far, at a good local price... so no need to imitate meat anyway. Spanish food can easily be adapted too. Thanks for the video :)

I agree with the sentiment here. The problem with meat eaters making “I went vegan for …” type videos is the lack of knowing and the lack of education. When you go vegan the first year or so is almost about re-educating yourself on food and how to enjoy food. And once you get past that, it opens up a whole new world of delicious vegan whole foods. Processed vegan “meats” is just as bad for your health as regular processed meats. Still, I think videos like this and the way health was highlighted can only be a good thing. And also I’m visiting Madrid in a few weeks so it was brilliant to see those vegan spots 🌱

@@joeterra.t speaking as a vegan and lover of Spain, I understand the point, going anywhere you may struggle to find places to eat is naturally a put off. Hence all the British style pubs, cafes all day English Breakfast bars. Some found it desirable to have. (Cringe) But, I found Tapas a great option and if you take the time to learn the language, most often you are treated as friends, even family - people are delighted to find ways to feed you and if anything it doubled the pleasure of eating out. No matter how remote. But the global surge in plant only eating has not left Spain lagging behind, especially in the cities it's not so much a problem as an exciting exploration. For anyone interested, Italy, France and Portugal are changing the food bars rapidly, too.

For many Spanish vegan recipes follow "Spain on a fork". Albert is really good at what he does. We spent the summer in Europe and spent several weeks in Spain and made it work. I suppose it's easier to accomplish when there's health and ethics fueling the endeavor. 8 years of practice also helps. Don't fret, it can be done!

I was actually amazed by the number of vegetarian and vegan restaurants that I encountered on my last trip to Barcelona. But I'm with Yoli, the produce in Spain is fantastic, you really don't need to make it taste like meat to enjoy it. AND I LOVE MEAT! I think we all need to be a little more cognizant of what we put into our bodies in general. ❤️

James, I was vegan for 5 years and organized a vegan group for support and to educate local stores, bakeries and restaurants. 14 years later and this city has become extremely vegan friendly. It wasn’t easy and plenty of people were antagonistic. Now it is fully normalized. I must say you appeared more rested and your skin looked very healthy over the course of the week.

Just got back from Spain, Catalan region. We are mostly plant based from the US. We did eat meat/cheese/milk in Spain. But our favorite ALL time dish we had was espinacas con garbanzos from the merkats. Who knows if they were cooked with any animal products. If you do keep eating vegan from time to time, may I recommend focusing on protein from beans/legumes/tofu. This will help your satiety. Buen provecho. 🙌

As an omnivore married to a part time vegan who falls off that wagon to her baco-pescatarian culinary preferences…..I think you did a fine job of presenting this side of modern gastronomy. The ‘fake’ meats should be judged on their own, and not the reflexive comparison to their animal based counterparts. I think you were very respectful to the various sensibilities that this topic encompasses. Well done.

Great video and personally a topic I'm very interested in. I'm planning to move to Spain in a couple of years and I'm coming from a country which has a similar issue of being heavily reliant on meat -- Japan. The good thing that Japan has going for it is the rice consumption, so it's easy to make vegan dishes around rice but there's a similar issue as in Spain where there is virtually no vegan options in restaurants, vegan meat isn't available in grocery stores, and countless ingredients are made mixed with meat products. So I've wanted to become fully vegan here for a while now but it's just really really hard. It seems once I move to Spain, I should expect a similar experience but I am encouraged hearing the talk from the Spanish vegan woman and seeing the vegan store you went to. Thanks for covering this!

Some years ago it was impossible to find things like vegan meat in a normal spanish supermarket but nowadays you can find some options. Of course you won't find in a normal supermarket the same variety that if you go to a vegan store like the one in the video (and those stores are quite pricey), but you can find things like vegan hot dogs, seitán or vegan chopped in any normal supermarket. I think the main problem here in Spain would be the restaurants, if you go out to dinner with non vegan friends you may find yourself in a situation like what we see at the beginning of the video.

I wanted to also suggest a video topic that I think many people might be interested in! Life in Spain = Noisy neighbours. I can't tell you how many times I see posts on social media from visitors to Spain and people from abroad that have funny and strange stories about this and how they had to adapt - Also, with the older flats/houses there is less noise reduction with the walls. Another example - How friendly neighbours are in Spain and what is expected etc. I know you mentioned this briefly a few videos back so it came to my mind to bring it up because sometimes people always compare their neighbours in their home country with the way things are in Spain when renting or buying a place. I would love your thoughts on your own experiences - Spanish neighbourhood do's/don'ts 101-style. Thanks again!

Yes! I agree that would be great 😊 I live in such a quiet neighbourhood in Spain where there’s a mix of full time residents (all Spanish) and people with second homes from Murcia city and Madrid. My husband & I threw a party last summer but felt we needed to stop at midnight because it seemed so loud (the neighbours had popped in earlier & most had gone by midnight), however, I’m sure they wouldn’t have minded if we’d continued. I couldn’t ask for more friendly, caring neighbours. They all look out for ‘los ingleses’ and we swap our traditional dishes regularly with them.

In Spain you cannot go into a random restaurant and expect them to have vegan food. You have to plan where to go, check if the place have something vegan AND decent. In Madrid, there are some vegan restaurants (which I generally don't like, with a few exceptions) and just a few with vegan and not vegan food on the menu. This is a bit of a pain when you want to eat out and all or most of your friends are not vegan. However, things are getting better. On the plus side, eating at home as a vegan in Spain is easy and delicious because of the quality and variety of ingredients.

¡Hola! Interesting video and some helpful and reassuring comments below confirming that vegetarians and vegans won’t starve in Spain. As a vegan of around 3-4 years, I don’t recommend ultra processed fake meats and vegan cheese, no wonder meat eaters feel sorry for us if they’ve tried these. Lots of veggies, beans and lentils etc make for a far healthier and satisfying diet IMO. I’ve only just started to learn Spanish and plan a trip in 4-5 years time when I can speak the language a bit. Hopefully there will be a few more vegan options by then😊. Incidentally, Cava is usually vegan I believe. Preferable to Prosecco IMO🍾

Love watching your videos. Always very helpful even though I'm a Spaniard. I did a whole food plantbase meals for over a year and it was difficult at first and tried different vegan substitution on meat and didn't really like them. I I preferred to do was more stews with lentils, chickpeas for example. If I want a sandwich or burger I would prefer grilled vegetables then put that in a bun. There are options but in Spanish restaurants it is difficult. Oh and the great thing I don't need insulin for my diabetes since cutting out animal products!

As a vegan shortly to travel to Spain for the first time, this video did not make me worried at all. I'm also a kiwi and although things are constantly improving, I'm very used to researching online before I go out to eat. However, there will be times that I will not be in a big city and it might be a little more difficult, so I did take some comfort that you did pretty well to find nourishment, prior to some research. I'm a little sad now that Madrid is not on my list, but I dare say that Barcelona will have plenty of delicious options. I enjoyed watching you attempt to replace meat for your carnivore friend, it was funny and relatable. Fake meats don't tend to do very well on their own, although there are definitely a few yummy exceptions, they still don't taste exactly like their animal based counterpart. Definitely when cooking at home, one can find a lot more tasty meals that don't need faux meat.

It seems to me that a lot of super famous dishes that are mostly plant-based like lentejas, fabada and judiones de la granja, and others could be modified to be vegan without being "fake" like the fake meat. I think with a bit more spice and some ingenuity, these dishes can be transformed into versions that are very close to the original ones.

I must admit that when me and my wife were planning our holiday to Spain we were concerned as to whether Vegans were even to be tolerated never mind facilitated, but honestly any negative concerns were soon banished as we found places to eat (some really excellent) in most of the locations we visited, and the supermarkets stocked plenty of items for our home cooked meals. As a general rule I would say that Spain is less 'vegan friendly' than most northern European countries but is changing and catching up rapidly.

I've been vegan 10 years, living in Barcelona 2.5 years. As several commenters have noted, it is quite easy being vegan in Spain, particularly in the bigger cities. Barcelona has more vegan restaurants and markets than perhaps any other city in the world, and many traditional restaurants and supermarkets feature vegan dishes and products. In the smaller cities and towns (I'm writing this on holiday in Burgos), it can be more challenging. But something to remember is that many non-Spanish cuisines feature vegan-friendly dishes, including Lebanese, Syrian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, and Indian. These cuisines can be found virtually anywhere in Spain, even in very small towns. But more to the point, veganism is an ethical stance, not a diet. For this reason, what might seem to be a sacrifice to some is an ethical obligation to us. I would encourage anyone watching this video to consider that one can live happily in Spain and enjoy its culture without doing so at the expense of animal rights. More and more Spanish people are recognizing this and over time the culture will change to reflect the new consciousness.

I chuckled at that guy in the beginning of the video that said about vegan eating "Eso no es natural, tio" (that's not natural, dude). Eating vegan requires intentionality. You are required to plan your day with foods that will have nutritional value and are also filling (containing fiber). Eating at regular restaurants won't usually achieve that goal, unless they specify vegan options in their menu. That's why a vegan cook book can provide ideas for pre-planned meals that are appetizing and also achieve nutritional requirements. Legumes (especially high in protein like soybean and chickpeas) cooked without adding ham or meat, grains like quinoa, 100% millet bread (that is gluten free, dairy free and vegan), and of course, rice and potatoes. There are plant based burgers at the supermarket or specialty market, heura (a plant-based meat made with soy and created here in Barcelona, Spain), tofu (another soy-based food that can be added to soups, grilled with veggies and added to salads), mushrooms (especially big portabella ones which are awesome when grilled). Not to mention, you can eat any fruit you want. It will be extremely hard to be a vegan and go out to regular restaurants for satisfying options. I have noticed similar experiences here in Valencia (although we do have a few vegan restaurants and they are very busy. Maybe more will open).

Fun video-- but there's a difference between vegan and plant based eating. The latter is vegetables, fruit, beans, legumes and grains. All so wonderfully available in Spain. Vegan seems to be processed food to taste like meat, dairy, fish. But, it's great to introduce the whole idea of cutting out meat, etc. I think, the vegan movement in the US gradually became plant based, at least for some. Or maybe it was the opposite. :) Anyway, lots of ways to eat. Thanks for the tour!

Mmm...not quite. Plant-based and vegan is the same when it comes to food but vegan encompasses a whole way of living that avoids wearing animal products as well as using then in cosmetics, for example. Plant-based is just the food part of veganism. I hope this makes sense. You can be vegan eating just legumes or vegan eating just processed fake meats.

This was just great. Very entertaining and thought provoking. We've been watching and enjoying your videos as we prep for a trip over in April. A question my wife has: can you get green veggies in Spanish restaurants? Many menus look singularly untainted by something as simple as a plate of spinach or green beans or even some peas (or a salad that contains more than an ambivalent amount of lettuce?). Are we just not looking in the right places?

One thing I have never enjoyed and avoid like the plague is the fake meat. It just does not appeal to me in any way/shape form. I have enjoyed "Spain on a Fork" as Albert shows Spanish Vegetarian or vegan recipes and I have not eaten one I did not enjoy.

Reading through the comments here, it is obvious Vegans can find options in the big cities. However, as I expand out the radius of my culinary journeys from the small pueblo where I live, a vegan will be hard pressed to find much more than salad or a fuente de verduras a la plancha. For me, this video was less about “to be or not to be” Vegan but more about building awareness about the daily food choices we make and inclusion of more vegetables in our meals. Thanks!

Watch the movie "What The Health". This documentary follows people that switch to plant-based. It's pretty eye-opening. You can also look up videos to see how animals are processed. Seeing that alone will make you think twice especially looking at leather shoes, purses, ect

I lived in Spain for 6 years and almost never saw anything green in resturants, only the weirdest salads with canned or jarred assortments. For a country that grows so many vegetables I was amazed how few fresh vegetables you see eating out.

Everyone does'nt have to go full vegan. Cutting down is the important part. I tried no-meat-november 4 year ago, and just didn't se the point of starting eating meat again.

Hi James Big fan! Enjoyed the episode made me laugh. I am vegan for many many years. I’ve spent a lot of time in Spain and the first time I was in Madrid as a vegan was really entertaining. I had to accept the best I would get was to be a transient vegetarian. My last trip in 2022 I was very happy with the many vegan options actually. In the north while on the Caminó believe it or not there were alot of options. Pamplona was very impressive for vegan options among other cities. Options such as mushroom Pinxos , patatas Bravas were fantastic. I did enjoy the episode made me laugh a lot. Honestly though when traveling through Europe had to flex a bit vegetarian on occasion. #vegansinspain

Patatas a lo Pobre are awesome... though I always add chorizo to it haha Allioli isn't supposed to have egg. It's "all i oli" which is garlic and olive oil in Valenciano, those are the only two ingredients it should always have.

I struggled with satiety for the longest time. I upped my fat intake along w/protein. Keeps me fuller much longer and doesn't spike my blood sugar. Vegan is healthy, but make sure to get your healthy fats(avocados, nuts)for satiety.

👏👏👏👌exactly my experience when I went to Madrid after going plant based!!! It was even harder as I traveled with my friend, who wasn't vegan - and wanted to eat all traditional food... I survived on patatas bravas, cerveza and was basically carrying food I bought in supermercados with me... The fruits and veggies in Spain taste sooo much better than in England tho! and churros are vegan! I had them with vegan hot chocolate! Good work on this vlog! I really love Spain but the traditional cuisine - definitely meat heavy!

The video and subject are a part of a necessary discussion concerning sustainability, climate change, and the ever increasing human population, not to mention human health and ethical treatment of animals. Anyway, my wife and I eat meat, but we ate vegetarian when we met, and I think one of the biggest benefits of a vegetarian diet is eating unprocessed whole foods. The degree of processing in vegan items is one of my main concerns, though. The expressions of Yoly and Phil upon trying the sausages are priceless. Thank you for this wonderful adventure into...probably not going vegan. Salud!

This is so funny. My husband and I are doing 90 percent plant based . If I eat meat it is fish and that has been twice a month unless recently we were invited to dinner at a friends house and theys served pizza with sausage. I was so hungry I just ate it. Living in Denver Co area it is easy to do plant based and vegan if you can afford to eat out. We do have some fab grocery stores like Natural Grocers where everything is GMO free, and organic. Our grocery bill went down so so much when we quit buying beef , chicken and ham which is another motivator. We did this for health reasons. We do eat organic . I thought your Spanish was really good. I agree a tutor is the best thing to do .

@@spainrevealed yeah thanks. My husband and I feel better overall . Meat causes inflammation and makes the body acidic . So overall we have been feeling better. We did invest in getting an insta pot and an airfryer which has helped with the cooking. I also started using my Vita Mix a lot and that has helped. I did vegan years and years ago before it was popular but I did not do it right and got allergic to everything. Since that time I have studied nutrition and Acupuncture and have learned how to balance things better. Recetas de gri has some fab recetas as does Spain on a Fork.

Very nice video!!!! Well done James (Yolly - you are looking AMAZING. Well done!) When I moved to Spain in 2019, I was the first of my family to be here and hence lived on my own. I decided to change to vegetarian lifestyle for a period of 6/7 months and felt amazing!!!! I then decided to do full-on vegan and honestly, I felt incredible after a year. And then my family joined me after two and a half years. 🥰 Four years later = 2023! I now do vegan Monday to Friday and join my family with a Spanish diet on Saturdays and Sundays. Fair is Fair!!!! I continue to feel AMAZING! Everything in Balance is my belief.

well...not always. To the extent they use animal products (such as filtering or fining with egg whites) then they're not. Many of the additives whose goal is to filter solids out of a wine are made with animal products....but again, not all.

Hi James, it seems to me that at first you didn't really take on this "challenge" the proper way. You can't really expect to find many vegan options in the kind of places that you prefer to go to regularly. Old man bars, neighbourhood "menús del día" and traditional tapas spots are not exactly the most vegan friendly places you can find in Spain. Unless that is exactly what you wanted to highlight, though. Most vegans that I know either stick to the places where they know they can find eating options they'll enjoy or do some research in advance through specialized websites to find new spots. And not many of them seem to care/know about vegan wine or beer either. All in all, being vegan takes a lot of work! And in Spain even more!

It's also a VERY different experience being vegan in a big city like Madrid or Barcelona, where you have tons of options as well as plenty of specialized restaurants and shops than being one in a smaller city or town, let alone in the countryside.
