I love how at the end he can't deny the truth that he simply felt worse when he went back to eating meat. This was a real depiction that change is not always easy but sometimes it's so worth it.

Great film! I was most impressed by Max's ability to stay strong when being ragged on by his closest friends. Going vegan usually is accompanied by changes in personal relationships with friends and family (more so when you are vegan because of ethics and not just eating a plantbased diet). Great job, fantastic watch, everyone wants a follow up! Veganism is the future

Yes this! And it's not just with a vegan diet. It's with any healthy diet or food change! If you are faced with your biggest temptations, many people have no idea the internal monologues and mental gymnastics you sometimes have to do to keep strong. Dieting/weight loss and getting healthy is not just diet and exercise, it's also a practice in mental and emotional strength!

Great documentary, very inspiring. Max reels you in with his authenticity and the producer does a great job all around. Re all the requests for updates, my first thought is Max may have been asked and declined for his own reasons. I haven't watched the entire vid at this point because I feel like I got what I needed from it approx 27 1/2 mins in. For me that is that the significance of your Why is crucial. The switch to a vegan way of eating 'cold-turkey' isn't in general the way most who stayed vegan began, at least that's not what the majority of vegan KZbinrs have stated. I haven't watched any other 'one-month' vegan or overnight or similar type vids to form consensus re successfully maintaining after. I feel personally going the gradual transition route may work best for me however I am curious to see more vids like this one. Would any have recommendations?

In my 35+ years of being vegan, I've seen much ignorance about what authentic veganism is and is not. The word "vegan" was coined by members of the Vegan Society (UK) in the late 1940s and was heavily influenced by Albert Schweitzer's writings on Reverence for Life. The definition still stands today and is as follows: "Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, and includes a reverence and compassion for all life. It applies to the practice of living on the products of the plant kingdom to the exclusion of flesh, fish, fowl, eggs, honey, animal milk and its derivatives, and encourages the use of alternatives for all commodities derived wholly or in part from animals. Veganism remembers man's responsibilities to the earth and its resources and seeks to bring about a healthy soil and plant kingdom and a proper use of the materials of the earth."
@JustinRussell9 ай бұрын
As the director of the film and an ethical vegan I appreciate you googling the definition for me. The true ignorance comes when someone cannot see that no matter what the intention of reducing or eliminating animal products from one’s life is ultimately for the animals. Let’s not narrow our minds and scrutinize anyone’s choices just because it doesn’t fit a definition. You do not sway people’s opinions or ideologies with this closed way of thinking.
@victoriahart16309 ай бұрын
@@JustinRussellThank you for replying to my comment. I strongly disagree with your opinion that people should have the freedom to define veganism as they wish..., and that holding integrity to the authentic definition is narrow-mindedness. People who are uncomfortable with the authentic definition of "vegan" ... and the values and principles behind veganism... are free to create their own word for whatever it is they are trying to do in their life. But it is wrong to twist or co-op an existing authentic definition that a small, dedicated group of humans in the 1940's not only created, but also risked their lives in following and widely advancing -- all for the sake of exploited, cruelly treated nonhumans. I've come to believe that people who want to change or co-op the vegan definition do so because they want to wear the badge but don't want to walk the talk. They change the definition to suit their own comfort level and have little or no regard for the comfort of those non-humans for whom the authentic definition speaks for. If they did, they'd be eager in following what the authentic definition makes clear. Authentic veganism does not discriminate against anyone. It is all-inclusive. Always has been. Always will be. There are no subcategories of veganism, as you seem to believe in. There is no "ethical vegan", no "environmental vegan", and so on. Those made up terms were created by people needing to feel comfortable rather than fully committed. Consider this: A criminal wanting to avoid the harsh penalty that matches their crime will often try changing the crime's definition in the hopes that both judge and jury lessen the charges against them. But changing a definition to suit one's comfort level shouldn't hold up in court, just as changing the authentic vegan definition to suit one's comfort level shouldn't hold up in our society. For each time that the authentic definition is changed, the victims -- the exploited and cruelty treated nonhumans -- lose. What's good and just and fair about that? Lastly, I didn't "google" the authentic vegan definition just for you. I learned about veganism from the founder of the American Vegan Society..., who had great respect for the members of The Vegan Society (UK) who first coined the term "vegan". He's no longer alive, but I'm sure he would agree with everything I've written here.
@JustinRussell9 ай бұрын
@@victoriahart1630 I am not changing the definition nor saying anyone can change the definition to fit their own specific criteria. Max abstained from animal products for 30 days. Was that not for the animals in the long run? By definition was he not a vegan if he did not contribute to animal suffering for 30 days or because his heart wasn't a vegan then he cannot use the word? Obviously Max was plant based and not vegan. But that term in 2013 when filming and producing was less used. Vegan as a marketing term gets more eyes. And isn't that what we all should be striving to do? Get more people to go vegan REGARDLESS of the heart being in or not in it as defined. How can that not be narrow minded if you think everyone must have it EXACTLY so as defined by day 1 of their journey. I'm just stoked for anyone that wants to better themselves, the planet and end animal suffering regardless of how they get to it. If you don't agree with that then I don't have anything left to say to you.
@victoriahart16309 ай бұрын
@@JustinRussell How can people embrace veganism and stay committed to it when they don't even know what the authentic definition is? By misrepresenting what authentic veganism is -- for the sake of using the term "vegan" as a marketing tool, by your own admission -- you only further contributed to the confusion regarding what veganism is and is not. Are you sure you're not trying to hide the fact that you don't have faith that people will embrace veganism if they knew the authentic definition? It is a proven fact that when we hold others to a higher level of expectations, they tend to rise to that level. In contrast, when we show little faith in people reaching high expectations, they tend to stay at a low level, not giving much if any effort. Something for you to seriously consider in future film endeavors. 🤔

I’m not denying meat can be in a sense appetizing but I think about the animal and I’m sickened by it. Being vegan has come very natural to me and it’s easy to keep it that way but it sucks that the restaurants don’t provide much vegan options or there isn’t much vegan places which would be great if there were lots of vegan places or only vegan places lol

I hear you brother! On the plus side you eat fresh, not all ingredients In restaurants are fresh, they may say its vegan and have no idea in terms of oil use etc, I miss eating out but cooking fresh food at home gives me comfort and I feel good too. Also saves you a lot of money.

This was a great documentary, unlike others I have watched but absolutely hilarious. Max is witty and handsome would love to see how he is getting on now, did he continue with his vegan ways or did he fall back to old habits, Victoria, Scotland

Max is adorable - even on his worst day. I would be his cougar anytime. I hope he is staying healthy/becoming healthier. I am SO glad he felt icky after gorging on all that flesh (but I also understand his puke-reaction to Tofurky - that stuff is nastier than nasty).

I add so much more to my oatmeal. Banana, berries, flax, cinnamon, and date syrup.

The reason you crave tofu is because it has lots of calcium and protein in it. I can always tell when I'm needing it by my cravings.
