Being used to classic definitely hurts you if you try modern. Feels like the only way to maximize your strength at modern is to forget everything you’re used to in classic. After playing both i really dont think modern is a stepping stone to classic like people say. Its a straight up alternative with pro’s and cons.

As someone who's been learning the game the past couple months it's not a stepping stone to classic. For characters like Lily why would you go back to classic when everything you need is right there and easier to execute? The 20% less damage doesn't matter because you can still input certain moves like classic without the 20% damage reduction while still having access to modern controls

For me modern control became a stepping stone to classic. Probably due to character I picked. Manon. I feel in her case specifically classic control is just much better. Too many things I lose in modern while the whole drive system related inputs are exactly same for both schemes. So I play ranked on modern half the time to focus on neutral while training in lab on classic. That aside, I do think modern and classic are just two different modes with pros and cons. Oh, and Guile felt like modern doesn't fit. You do still need to have charge, so modern doesn't offer much in his case imo.

I started using modern controls strictly because of all the hate flame, and I absolutely love it. I thought charge characters would suck with modern; boy was I wrong, because my M Guile is on a 15-match win string in Gold (and will hopefully hit Platinum tomorrow). The fact that I never drop combos or specials makes the game more competitive. Seriously love it, and don't care who flames me for using them. I actually hope the player is crying in his/her gaming chair.

I've been saying for a long time that fighting games require too much skill to be good at. It's not fair when I lose to somebody just because they have spent more time practicing and are better than me. Single button special moves and automatic hit-confirms are a good start, but in future I hope they consign _everything_ to a single button. Anti-airs, footsies, whiff punishing, meter usage, mix-ups and mind games... all of that should be on one button. That way I won't have to waste time practicing all these things (which are really just arbitrary difficulty barriers anyway) and can instead focus on what actually matters: pressing one button. Who knows, maybe one day you won't even have to press the button. The game will just recognise that you want to press the button and do it for you, streamlining the experience so as to be more forgiving for newer players. Of course, there should still be the option to press the button manually for longtime veterans of the genre who want a challenge, but the key is in providing choice to the player. Nobody should be precluded from winning just because they don't want to practice or put as much effort in as other people, and it's good that competitive games are finally starting to recognise and correct this imbalance.

@@deththekidd5062 Basketball is another great example, thank you bro. A regular person like me can't even play that game! It's about time they made it way more accessible by incorporating a type of Modern Controls. Lower the hoop _way down_ for a start so that a regular human can reach it and widen it too so that you can actually hit a free-throw without requiring 10,000 hours of practice first. When someone puts up a hoop in their backyard they don't put it 10ft in the air, they put it at a reasonable height. So basically, everyone at home is playing on Modern Controls. But then if you wanna go and try out for the NBA you can't because it's 'Classic only'. It's unfair man, and it's bad for the growth of the sport too. There are like what, 20 teams in the NBA? Open it up to Modern Controls and there would be ten times that amount easy, the playerbase would explode. It's like if EVO disallowed Modern players from entering, they would get about one or two hundred players only, the same hundred people that have been playing Street Fighter for the last 30 years and have a PhD in anti-air DP. The world has moved on. Basketball is still in the Dark Ages as you pointed out, it could learn a lot from SF6 and modern fighting games in general.

Modern really helps out with grapplers, and they're already pretty strong in SF6. Like you said, that split second for a LV3 super is critical. You do miss out on some other tools, but I'd say it's a fair trade, especially since Lily's Lv3 is pretty much impossible to dodge if you're caught doing unsafe stuff.

Modern is not busted, but it is overtuned. The small OPTIONAL lower damage for specials and supers along with having a couple less moves are nowhere near enough downsides to balance out one button specials and supers, which are INSANELY strong. If it didn't have access to any classic inputs, I think it would be pretty even. It needs some actually impactful downsides to level the field. And I mean this sincerely, it's not a salty old man thing

Yeah, at lower ranks (I'm Bronze 2 atm) Modern is overtuned imo. The things I'm noticing are: 1) Classic players at lower ranks don't have command of all the tech, and their patterns tend to be more limited. But low Moderns use tech that nobody else does, bc the game is auto-strating for them, making them crazy unpredictable relative to low Classics. 2) Very few players at lower ranks use their super bar optimally, but Modern players do optimal combo-into-Level3 routes that are WAY beyond what Classic players are doing, which is fucking annoying when some dude who's got no fundamentals drops a 70% combo on you. I don't think Modern should go away, but some tuning is definitely in order, at least at lower ranks.

And often your lost has little to do with Modern controls and more to do with you. Modern only helps your execution. It does not give free wins and the proof is that higher ranks are dominated by Classic players. And if you want to nerf Modern because it creates an imbalance in lower ranks, are you going to nerf gimmicky characters like Honda, Blanka, and Marisa who are questionable picks at higher ranks, just because lower ranked players need to learn to beat those gimmicks? The point is that in most games, if you haven't mastered the game's core systems, you don't get to slap people for 70% suddenly, but Modern means these dudes are jumping constantly, whiffing buttons and never break throws, then all of a sudden out-of-the-blue do an optimized combo-into-Level3 off a stray hit. It's jarring and screws up the skill curve. I think modern is a great way to understand the characters since you can see how they are successful without the extra weight of the inputs. Then if you want to go deeper con can switch to classic to maximize your options.

This vid showed off the pros and cons pretty well. Everyone is talking about easy command grabs, but also that last lvl 3 was a good example of the damage reduction. Classic damage would have killed JP in that scenario. Instead he survived and won the match. Definitely some tradeoffs but still looks like a fun way to play.

For players that can do the commands, I dont see much reason to pick Modern until tech is found that is considered very beneficial, but is only practical or even possible to execute under Modern.

Modern works extremely well with some of the roster. Modern Gief is so much fun. Myself I'm a MK-10-11 player and modern allowed me to be at home instantly with a control scheme. JP classic is a must however, hah.

I was not well practiced for SF6 so I only participated expected to lose... got 1 win (DQ) 1 loss, 1 loosers win, 1 loosers loss ;) What I got out of this is that Modern can totally rock the boat by having multiple learned characters and counterpick their character. I maybe lossed more than I won, but my idea works wonders if you know more than 3 characters. Dee Jay might not be a good Modern Control Character, I suggest Guile for that.

Shuto seems to have made the complete swap to modern Marisa, after playing classic Luke during the demo, and classic Marisa at the start. Not sure what Marisa loses, but seems to be viable if the best Marisa in the world is grinding modern.

Im newer to FGs and tried sf4 and 5 just didn't enjoy them much. I did enjoy smash melee/ultimate and MKX so I decided to try modern with SF6. I still know and use manual inputs I learned in sf5 but having the ability to not use them constantly is a massive help. I can have instant reactions while also not taking a 20% dmg nerf when I know I'm able to enter the inputs myself at times. Knowing classic inputs for specials while using modern is a massive help to get early leads or finish fights.

Can you still enter ALL classic inputs even in modern? This is the only reason I haven’t switched to M yet. I want to be able to use M but since I cant have all moves in them, at least have the option to switch to C

@@Pikachu-qr4yb Depends on character, but no, not all. At least Manon can't do it all on modern. She loses a good combo ender with great corner carry. And she loses normal version of an overhead special which got good range and is safe on block at max range. Only OD version of that is possible. She also loses stHK and a weird side switching anti air crHK. Don't really know about other characters.

@@Pikachu-qr4yb No you lose some. If your character has say a QCF+P special and QCF+K special you can only do one of them manually and are stuck with the modern input only for the other. Obvisouly impacts some characters more than others.

All the charge characters feel awkward on modern controls to me. Also doesn't really make sense to use them, I feel. Because doing the charge inputs as fast as possible isn't all that much easier, but they do get a damage nerf.

The only way I see to fix imbalances in the control schemes is to BUFF CLASSIC CONTROLS. You can't yank back hard on Modern at this stage, lest Capcom is attacking the very thing they want newbies (and more) to embrace. Even worse, I want to say CLASSIC = 6 BUTTONS, not 8 buttons. So how can we make 6 button Classic stand up to Modern? Well, how about not locking Drive Impact to HP+HK? If I could DI using LK+MP or LK+HP, I can more quickly respond to situations like Modern can. How about Classic being able to use a level 1 super art using LK+HP+Direction? If I could quickly level 1 when in BurnOut, I would feel much stronger. How about LP+HK is a shortcut to the Special button that allows for quick reversal DPs, SPDs, and more? There's lots of possibilities here other than "Classic controls now means choosing to be disadvantaged".

Yeah modern is viable got some nice ups to it like the super coming out almost instantaneously which is pretty nutty. If there are players that prefer more convenient ease of use controls then they should try Modern.

SPD is 5f and the Geif 720 super is a 7f grab with the same range as his LP SPD and full s. He also loses little and gains a ton on Modern. His air throw is 4f and you can combo into it. So good.

I’m in a weird position where I’m a total beginner so I have no muscle memory of classic BUT everything I know about fighting games is tied to inputting directional commands so it’s still weird for me to use modern and find myself doing fireball and shoryu motions at times without thinking. SF6 is the first fighting game I spent my money to buy though so I’m going to use my beginner-ness to my advantage to get used to modern since it seems the way forward and I’m sure my joints will thank me when I get old

I’ve been trying Honda on modern controls and it’s pretty good. You lost the overhead but you can still do the headbutt and the air thingy on manual. And the best part is the level 2 super where you can whole screen confirm enemies spamming fireball it’s so nice to only press 1 button super Lol

Ive played SF ever since i was a Kid bith SF2 but i switched to modern because it feels more natural to me with just 1 light medium and heavy button because i play a lot of Anime Fighters. I still use Motions for everything i can and only do Shortcuts for moves that dont have Motions anymore.
