I'm 66 with a bad disc for years but I totally agree with your advice. Depending on the severity of occasional back pain, I progress gradually and soon I am feeling pain free again.

There was a study done on older folks split into two groups. One group didn't weight train and the other were ex-power lifters. Both groups had disc issues (as Mark says find someone who doesn't) but the ex-power lifters had almost no back pain across the board, while the others almost all dealt with it daily.

People can believe this or not, but I've dealt with lower back pain since very young. I was an ectomorph with a small frame and I was weak. I've dealt with this up into my 40s now until I discovered SS and the low bar squat and deadlifts. What a back builder! For the first time in my life I had all this meat on my upper back and lower back was strong and stiff as a board during lifts, very good posture when doing stuff, etc. Back pain 100% gone!! I've had to move back to high bar recently and had to stop the deadlift because arm issues. Back pain is back again, but not as pronounced. I'm trying RDLs as a supplement right now just to experiment with what happens with that (I'm past novice LP). Yes I am a witness to the fact iron is the best prescription for back pain.

So true! The status quo says "Rest until it gets better". Movement is key and strength training FOR SURE! So many times I've had small strains, pains, whatever and was uncertain if I should train, but I went ahead and cautiously tried lifting and, lo-and-behold, I was able to finish my goal and I felt BETTER. Like you say you have to use common sense, but you also can't shy away from training because of small aches, pains and strains.

Yeah, my 58-yo knees always feel creaky on the first warmup set. By the end of the workout, they're feeling pretty supple, as long as I don't overdo it on volume.

I agree 100%. I’ve fixed multitudes of ailments and injuries over the years. I can honestly say, that the common denominator was lifting weights- and not light ones. I’ve fixed rotator issues, knee issues, lower back issues. Even strengthened weak wrists after dual CTS surgeries. The iron cured all of it. I’m 51 and kicking ass making the biggest lifts of my life.

Hell, I'm a long way from your target demographic but even as a youngin' at 22 heavy lifting helps me with a lot of pain from working crappy minimum wage jobs. Standing for 9 hours a day is helluva lot easier when you can squat 300lbs

Sully, I follow your philosophy with a bit of change. I use the Shrug bar for for my main lower body lift. I do not like the bar on my back and regular deads start to far out front for me. I mix free squats, kB squats, KB goblet squats and KB swings along with the Shrug bar deads. It works for an old roughnecks back and progression is solid. Pressing and pulls accordingly to stimulate and progress. Many ways to skin a cat.....

I'm not going to endorse this approach, but I'm not going to decry it, either. It's working for you, and that's important. Now, if you worked with me, I'm pretty sure--not certain, but pretty sure--I'd get you doing low bar squats and standard deads without too much trouble. I've had a lot of people say "that won't work for me," but with some careful one-on-one coaching they see that it does work. So I'm pretty sure it would work for you--but not certain. Maybe it wouldn't. Maybe you've found exactly the program I would prescribe. What I AM sure of is that you're doing yourself a big favor by training for strength. Keep it up, stay strong, stay healthy, and come visit us at Greysteel if you're ever in the area, even if it's just to say hi. Thanks for watching!

The only thing that I would change is this: Motion Is Medicine . .as long as it isn't BALLISTIC motion. Sadly, I had to learn this the hard way, and I have the ruptured lumbar discs to prove it.

Can iron fix a degenerated disc disease “DDD”?
@GreySteel
@GreySteel 6 жыл бұрын
Does it repair the disc or the degneration? No. Does it improve function and pain? Definitely. It comes down to this: you can have DDD and a weak back, or DDD and a strong back. I'm sure you'll agree that this is a simple choice.
@omarmaani8271
@omarmaani8271 6 жыл бұрын
Another question. Would exerting a force -load- onto to the damaged spine and its components further degenerate -in this particular case- an already degenerated disc despite strengthening its muscular surroundings and in spite of proper lifting technique? Thanks.

Yeah. They don't know either. And the advice to lift low wts for high reps just because you have DDD is bullshit. We train people with DDD (including me), and we train them heavy. And they get better. So there it is.

@GreySteel

Greysteel is a business, and as you may be aware, one does not exactly get rich in the profession of barbell coaching. The videos don't make themselves, and we have bills to pay like everybody else. We'd like to increase our output, improve our production facilities, and reach more people. Takes time and $. Are you by any chance a Patreon supporter? If so, thanks for your support.

GreySteel Totally understand and respect that. You are an intelligent and highly educated person (and also published author), and it's my humble opinion that some banners by themselves at the end of the video may be enough and they will do less damage to your online persona / brand. Wish you all the best, if I wasn't in another country 10 timezones away my 82yo dad would be in your gym 3 times a week for sure.
