Especially when it gets heavy i struggle with proper form, logical i guess. During warm up sets maintain proper technique is much more easy

I have this strong desire to hold my breath for as many reps as I can in the bench and OH press so I can lift faster and use more weight. I picked this up from Jim Wendler. However, on OH press I find I steer getting pretty light headed by the 3 or 4th rep so I think Im going to have to back off the weight and start breathing every 1 or 2 reps.

Excellent video 👍🏻 McGill’s books are amazing and gave me fantastic knowledge of spine biomechanics to benefit my personal pursuit of suprasufficient deadlift strength as well as my clients’ His recommendations, unfortunately, have always been hard to take seriously, however.

I've been low bar squatting for a year and a half, along with the other SS lifts, and recently developed so much pain in my elbows that I can no longer effectively squat heavy (for me) weights. I'm doing shoulder and elbow rehab exercises and stretches, but I don't think it's in my best interest at 60yo to keep wrenching my shoulders and arms into the positions preferred for low bar squat. So....my new SSB should arrive today and I'm hopeful I can squat with it pain free and allow my elbows to heal.

The older I get the more I believe people look for excuses to not lift weight. On the other hand, many at my gym are over 70, come in consistently and never make excuses. Ironically most take no medications. Hmmmmm 🤔

Love your delivery and humor Sully. But even more than that, love your passion and knowledge of strength training for masters athletes. At 55 years old, it's hard to get excited about anything regarding strength training from social media as it's almost exclusively geared toward those under 40. Thank you for your comitment to this extremely important information. 🙏🏼

Interesting debate. Of course, form and number of reps, how often you train, etc. crucial. Can deadlifts be safe if done carefully enough? Not sure, and I've never done them (low weight high reps careful squats, yes) but certainly I'd be very careful, especially if you aren't young. One other thing, there's a stunning mental component to back pain, and this has been shown in very high level controlled interventional studies, like one in 2021 by a Harvard's Michael Donino, which showed stunning effectiveness against back pain from mind body techniques. See the book, "The Way Out", by Alan Gordon to learn more.

Good grief. I just love all the armchair "experts" who think they know so much more than Dr. Sully. You all should go back to lifting nothing heavier than your fork or beer and let the Dr. do his job.

For someone with no great need to get anywhere fast, is there anything wrong with doing HLM more or less from the outset? I realise it is faster to do LP but what if you just don’t want to pour all your energy into this, got some responsibilities and need to be fresh. Will you still get wherever you were meant to get, even if this is the longer, scenic route?

Meanwhile, the intermediate programs in PPST and BP involve limit sets in the squat and deadlift every week. Is Sully saying that those two limit sets don't count as max efforts on the hips, twice a week?

Thank you so much for responding. I am a 78 year old male who has been following Greysteel for several years. When I saw Attia's and McGill's video I became totally confused. Was I wasting my time? Though I am now stronger, what am I really doing to myself? As a result of your response, I will continue to follow Greysteel and do the major heavy lifts, though I added barbell rows.

Hey Sully I’m a 49 year old male 89-90 kg bodyweight and just won my local gym’s deadlifting competition (they held it for the Olympics) with 190kg single. I’ve been novice linear progressing for 4 months now (although I’ve tried it before a few times). My bench is 87kg for 3 sets of 5 and my squat is currently 142.5kg for 3 sets of 5. My press is terrible at 52kg but I’m trying to get it to go up and I suspect my technique isn’t dialled in. Power clean is approaching 60kg but I get a mental block (it seems) and I’m struggling to improve it. My late novice looks like this Tuesday Squat Press/bench Deadlift Thursday Light squat Press/bench Chin ups Saturday Squat Press/bench Power clean As you can see I’m heading for that HLM!

I don't see the rationale for doing squats every workout, certainly beyond a novice stage. I'm nearing nine years under the bar, and am presently73 years old. I lift three days a week and have a upper body and lower body workout. Squats are my strongest lift, I think. Recently, I did a single to good depth with 340#. With both the squat, and trap bar dead lift, I will do a heavier single or double, instead of a normal set of 6 to 8 reps, if I don't want so much volume that day. Really, the most important thing is show up and challenge yourself. If you do that over a good run of time, I think whatever program one uses, you are going to be at nearly the same place.
@GreySteel
@GreySteel 10 күн бұрын
I don't agree that "just showing up and challenging yourself" will get us to the same place regardless of program--I've seen LOTS of evidence to the contrary. But I do agree that managing volume is critical.

@@GreySteel I think if you train "close" to failure, over a long period of time, you will get to your genetic strength potential. One program might get you there sooner, one might get you there somewhat later. In the end, we all hit a ceiling of sorts. There is no program out there that will unlock another 50# on my squat, at this point. I'm fine with that. I have not come across another lifter close to my age that can lift as heavy as I do. Yes, I've lifted consistently and intensely for almost nine years, but I was also blessed with a fair amount of natural strength. Anyway, you are helping a lot of seniors live better in their old age, so thank you.

As an aging athlete I still think long term when it comes to strength training. Consistency is still the key, going from novice to intermediate is a matter of your own experience or the experience of a seasoned coach. Intensity is your friend and volume mismanaged is your enemy. Recovery is still the key to getting stronger or maintaining your strength. Is it hard, yes at times but not as hard as living in misery because you neglected your health. Have fun.

Nearly 65. Started weightlifting after surviving cancer nearly 2 years ago. Switched to powerlifting after getting your book, the Barbell Prescription. 135 Overhead Press. 225 bench. Working on my squats and deadlifts now. I don’t know if it’s psychological but I’m finding it hard improving my OHP and bench. I’m still progressing in my squats and deadlift.
