we used to add gaffer (Duct) tape on top of one piece of Aluminium tape, with a piece of string from the bottom of the tape to the yokes. That was for cold days (racing in the UK in October), you can start with the extra tape and as the bike gets hotter, rather than coming in you can pull of one strip of tape whilst on the track, and hence lowering the temp. no different to pulling of a tear-off.

hi bro, may i know what makes moto3 bike so light? i want to cut the weight of my ktm rc390 from 170ish to 100-120kgs, is it possible by changing to lighter bodykit, aluminium front stay/swing arm? do u hv any advice what else should i change to reduce the weight?
@vtranmoto Жыл бұрын
hey man, there's a lot that goes into this. The moto3 is a gp/racing chassis and everything on it is about weight reduction. For example, no fan, no starter, extremely lightweight battery, titanium everything, carbon ram air. So not only is the design about weight reduction, the materials used are also optimizing for weight reduction as well. For the RC390, just like most production bikes that we turn into race bikes, do: - full titanium exhaust system - carbon fiber bodywork (the GP bikes also use carbon bodywork, I had a custom kit made for my RC8C and that reduced about 2lbs) - of course get rid of all the street stuff, lights, license plate, license plate bracket - you can get titanium bolts - not sure if there is aftermarket race subframe, but that is something you can also look into (they have this for bikes like S1000 and R6) - replace the dash with an AIM system - replace street wiring harness with race harness - titanium internals within the motor itself the problem that we run into with weight reduction on production bike is diminishing returns. You'll end up spending more money than the original cost of the bike just to lose weight on it, so usually for racing we stick with exhaust system + bodywork. After that your laptime will not be affected by minuscule reductions. Certainly cool, but only do it if money is no object. Hope that helps!

Okay keep up the good work!

Thanks Dukie! I wish I was able to get a bit more time with it but that’s what this weekend is at COTA is for! These types of bikes I wouldn’t try to do anything aftermarket unless I really knew what I was doing (and I don’t, ha!). The few folks I’ve spoken to that are either engineers or race Moto3s use the tape method lol, so I’m just gonna do that and take good notes. It’s kind of fun/funny but it’s a quirk that comes with owning one of these crazy race bikes! :D The thing I’m trying to figure out now is the rearset peg situation. Right know it’s very cramped and my knees are screaming, but the rearset has no adjustability! >.

@@vtranmoto LOL, it's called training and stretching!! LOL. A simple work around in the meantime is to add some foam to the seat (maybe just tape it on for now), which works to lift you away from the footpeg, but it also changes your angle to the handlebars, so only a work around, not a solution. The GP teams will have a bunch of different rearsets for different riders. Then just stick with those for that rider. The tape on the radiator is a hangover from the 2-stroke GP days. There is a company that makes (made, don't know if they are still around) a thermostat system for the Honda RS125/RS250 that would work in the RC250 too. But probably would need to be thought out well to make it fit and work properly. On my iM250s I really don't bother with worrying about temperature, but I am not running RC250 engines. I dont guess it would be too scary to ride with 60hp? Hard to ride i imagine hard to mentally rev the piss out of that motor! I cant imagine maintaining this bike if you actually raced it regularly. It is low enough powered that most racers WOULD be using a lot of the motors potential meaning big time wear and tear compared to the 765-100cc beasts that mere mortals honestly would not be taxing the motor so much (is my guess) well especially a motogp bike which is academic cause no one is buying one of THOSE lol
@vtranmoto Жыл бұрын
The motor feels so different than a standard production motor (in my experience), definitely takes a level of commitment that I just don't have. I feel like I'm lugging it everywhere (because I am) and what's interesting is how tall its geared. You use first gear *alot*. The KTM Moto3 team shared their COTA data with me and they use 1st gear in 6 corners at COTA. I've never even touched 1st gear on any bike I've ridden on track before. Just lots of little differences that add up to a very different experience!
