Extremely useful for your viewers to see this, as we all need to be aware of the position the person that disseminates our information is coming from. This isn't to devalue your work in any way, it actually shows the value in it. For example, I disagree with a lot of your answers here but also find your history content to be rigorous and not distasteful to somebody like me who isn't aligned with you politically basically at all, and is a history buff. Every historical source, primary or secondary, academic or pop-educational, has biases and it's really useful for the person receiving the information to be able to understand what position the source is coming from. Thank you for not obfuscating that, you have given your audience a basic road map for where we might want to take pinches of salt and that's a good thing.

To say that the left wing is concerned with banking and such being "not real work" is a strawman. The argument is not that banking/financial services are not "real work," it's that they are valued because of capital input, not labor input. A left winger would argue that because accumulating the capital necessary entails exploiting the labor of others, it is immoral and therefore, as the test puts it, "regrettable." Sex work would certainly be considered labor, so this is not really an instance of hypocrisy. Also, private charity has declined due to government investment in welfare? Do you have any sources/studies to back that up, I've never heard that claim before and I'm skeptical but I am willing to be informed haha.

@@timurermolenko2013 You reference "practice show[ing] that stepping away from God makes [people] feel pride to decide what's good or bad," as though this is backed-up by any significant or demonstrable study. The demonstrable fact is that that it isn't; decisions of what's good and bad have always been made by people. (No matter how much those people may have believed that God(s) guided their decisions, the decisions themselves were no less made by people, at least given the absence of evidence of divine intervention.) Religion/religious beliefs, or lack thereof, do not make one moral/immoral, nor is religiosity required to make one moral. If religion and morality coincided, religion would not have been used as a rationale/justification for inhumane atrocities all throughout human history (i.e. the Crusades, the blood libel of the Jews in Christianity, the persecution of Christians under Ottoman rule, the use of the Bible to justify slavery).

As to the charity/social security question I think charity is a terrible way to help people. Mosy charity generally doesn't go to those actually needing help, it comes down to the charity giver who gets to decide where the money goes which is a great way to only help a few people and not all those in need, there is no possible way to change poorly allocated charities except the headperson and if you hadn't notice with things like the mosquito nets in Africa, rich people tend to have terrible ideas to 'fix problems' That being said, much of this can be leveled at state charities

You seemingly implied that sex work is not real work, though, given your religious views, I'm not surprised. While I'm not going to argue that being a landlord is not work, as there are obviously elements of work that come along with it--book keeping, maintenance, and general management to name just a few--I would, however, argue that sex work is more work than being a land lord.
@EcclesiastesLiker-py5ts
@EcclesiastesLiker-py5ts 3 жыл бұрын
I think part of it is the definition of "work". A landlord, like an investor, may not do much LABOUR, but they take on risk. The amount of cost they incur, for maintenance, a business failing or succeeding, more or less uptake and so on, stays the same, while the amount of money they make can change. That risk is the work they do. A landlord is obliged to provide the same service however much money he or she makes. In theory at least.

@@viviancooper5892 One must define "drug dealing." Because if you define it as "the distribution of drugs," it is an incredibly valuable field. For example, how else are people going to get their insulin, anti-depressants, hypertension medication, etc.? Now, if one defines it as "the illegal distribution" of drugs, you then have to justify why certain drugs should be illegal. Hint, I promise you that you'll be hard pressed to find a drug that is currently illegal and justifiably so, especially if you're going to keep some of the other drugs that are currently legal, legal. To name but one example, opioids. There is no justifiable reason why alcohol, tobacco, and opioids are legal, for either recreational use or medicinal use, while marijuana, peyote, and MDMA are illegal for all uses, federally, as schedule one narcotics. Perhaps a better example would be going into the priesthood or working as a pastor, not all work is equal value.

@@viviancooper5892 I'm not so sure about that. Sex workers have to be good sales people, actors, socially talented, and number of other interpersonal skills. They provide physical attention, a loving environment, even if that's fake, comfort, and a number of other vital emotional attention which is necessary to our existence. The biggest difference between a pastor and a sex worker is that the pastor only provides value to those who believe in the product he's selling. I, for example, get no value from pastors, if anything, the product they sell yields more harm to humanity than help it provides. Sex workers, alternatively, provide services that all human beings need, regardless of whether they want to purchase the service or not. I might not want to purchase bottled water, but that doesn't change the fact that I need water. Moreover, the harm that sex work yields to society is not a factor inherent in the service, but rather precisely tied to it's prohibition. To suggest otherwise is to remove the veil hiding your obvious ignorance.

@@viviancooper5892 So are you telling me, that my viewpoints, which by the way used to like yours, that have matured over discussions with WOMEN who actually work in the legal sex work industry are male centric? Never mind that my views have shifted because of WOMEN and WOMEN'S perspectives on the industry. Bodily autonomy is a pivotal aspect in any free society. And your "moral" objections to it are just that of an antiquated world view, almost certainly informed from your religious world view, just how mine used to be. I'm not disputing that bad things happen regarding the industry, but I am arguing that that is a necessary result of the industry's prohibition, the legalization of which would help resolve some of that harm, much like the legalization of drugs. My point with the opioids was not assuming that you thought that doctor's don't over prescribe, but in an attempt to illustrated to you that your argument is flawed because you used drug dealing to draw a comparison between that and sex work when in reality this country's drug policy is riddled with misinformation, scientific inaccuracies, and religious fanaticism it's honestly abhorrent, just like the prohibition of sex work. Your argument only works if you assume that both are inherently bad, which I, and many others, do not. See, I used to be like. Thinking that sex work and drug dealing are these absolutely morally bankrupt industries because that's what I had been told by the priest at my church. Well, over time I began to think for myself and read about and explore other's ideas and arguments. I ultimately came to the conclusion that there is nothing inherently immoral about drug dealing or sex work. Is there tangible harm that comes from the illegal sale and distribution of drugs? Absolutely, no doubt about it. But drug dealing is the necessary result of legal and economic constraints forced on individuals who are left with virtually no other option. You want to fix the perceived problems of drug dealing? Great, me too, but you do that by creating more leftist economic standards and safe guards, not by sending these people to prison, almost certainly surrendering them to a life crime after they get out. As for sex work, you want proof that there's nothing inherently immoral about it? Is there something immoral about two consenting adults cuddling? Kissing? Hugging? Talking while cuddling? Having sex? I sure hope that you would agree with that. Unless you think sex outside of marriage is evil and immoral, in which case, okay, I suppose you're entitled to you're 13th century opinion. But assuming you agree, what does the exchange of money change in those scenarios? Nothing. The customer is consenting to exchange money to engage in that conduct, and the service provider is consenting to receiving that money in exchange for engaging in previously agreed upon activities. No one is being forced to do it; it is functionally the same as when a boyfriend and girlfriend go to one of their respective places and have sex. The stereotype of prostitutes having gone through sexual trauma is just that: a stereotype. Sure, there are a number of those people who work in that realm, but that's almost certainly where it is ILLEGAL. Why? Because they began to self medicate with drugs, got addicted, and needed the money to fuel that addiction. The women who work in the legal realm don't have that experience. They see it as a liberating position and a good way to make some money. Again, that's not me prescribing my thoughts on it, but literally the workers themselves. They go through STD tests to protect both them and the customers, they have actual security and safety, and drug testing, you know, like any other employment. They're there because they choose to be there, not because there's no other option. Oh and before you jump to conclusions, no I didn't pay them anything. They were merely friends of mine telling me their honest opinions and the reality of legal sex work.

Do you agree with free markets in the sense of Adam Smith or would you be more influenced by Austrian, Geneva, and Chicago School Neoliberals? I make a distinction between the two based on Quinn Slobodian's book, "Globalists: The End of Empire and Birth of Neoliberalism." Slobodian makes the case that the dichotomy between free trade and state intervention is misleading. That actually Neoliberals were all about using state laws and regulations to encase markets. This idea was meant to combat Nationalism and forms of Dircet Democracy by imposing what some Neoliberals called, the "supranational" order. They used organizations like the GATT, WTO, IMF, etc, to implement these ideas. The book is a good read. I can't really do it justice here, but I think breaking the usual dichotomy between free markets and state intervention is important.

The question is asking if you think authoritarian states are actually more effecient, or if they only appear more effecient. For example consider the technological progress since the enlightenment as opposed to pre enlightenment (also consider pre roman principate vs post principate), in this case are authoritarian regimes actually more effecient, or less?

How is sitting on a house, not improving it (like many landlords) and in some cases not even using it a real job? You're contributing nothing to society and just taking property that could be better used by someone actually living in it. As has been proven by numerous studies that show housing the homeless is the best way to end homelessness.
@TribuneAquila

I agree with you, but i also see his point too, how is sex work actually contributing to society as a whole? They are both essentially services not goods, and these services dont necessarily create a productive value. Maybe the differentiation here is that prostituion is more of a luxury good, wheras renting is generally an everyday good. So maybe renting property needs to become a luxury good.

The artist and the writer dont necessarily create art with the intent of generating revenue. Some artist of course do, but some post freely to reddit, same with writers. They write and create art for its own sake. However, manufacturers and business persons generating revenue is inherent to their practicies, they cannot exist without selling their goods and services.

Don’t you know any regulations cause monopolies. The government creates monopolies man. If there were no regulations for how much leaded gas I can put into the river every corporation would be small. Big corporations are unprofitable because the economies of scale prefer small businesses. In a place with no laws your small mom and pop pharmacy will out compete big pharma. Libertarians make no goddamn sense primarily because they do not know what economies of scales are. Henry Ford’s assembly line is more productive than a couple of dozen of people working in a workshop.

Some interesting responses by the Casual Historian (CH) to the test. 1) CH agrees that rich people should have access to better standards of health care than poor people. 2) CH strongly approves of predator mutlinationals being allowed to create monopolies without restrictions. So when an unregulated KZbin starts (say) demonetising videos which it or advertiseers disapprove of, or KZbin, Facebook, Twitter et al kick particular users or groups off or censor their views, or give preference to some channels or views over others withtheir algorithms, he is in no position to complain. Such things are, after all, what unregulated predator multinationals do when allowed to run monopolies. 3) CH strongl;y agrees that taxpayers should not prop up theatres & musems which cannot survive on a commercial basis. That would basically be most museums, from the Smithsonian down. All of them are paid for by taxpayersl As are, BTW, all public libraries. So he would (presumably) shut them down as well. 4) CH mildly agrees that kids should not have to go to school if they do not want to. 5) On the multinartionals are exploiting plant genetic resources CH gives a response that is problematic, arguing that if there was more private ownership of resources there would be no problem, which for plant genetic resources is ridiculous since he is basically suggesting that particular individuals should own the rights to particular plant species across an entire nation no matter where that plant was located, which could be problematic if a plant was ONLY situated (or the only examples left were situated) on somebody else's land. Would they have to negotiate twice, once with the plant species owner and once with the land owner, or would their deal with the plant species owner give them automatic rights of access to the land owner's property?
