Ape Initiative is the only research facility in the world dedicated to the study and conservation of bonobos. It is a federally-recognized non-profit 501(c)(3) and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums as a Certified Related Facility. Filming within Ape Initiative was done with professional supervision at all times.
Bonobos are very endangered in the wild, with only around 15,000 left - which is in large part due to the pet trade. In this video, you see Kanzi engaging in human activities as part of his daily enrichment, but Kanzi is by no means a pet at Ape Initiative.
⚠️ It is important to remember that bonobos and all other primates are NOT pets.
Minecraft (and any other touchscreen game) is one of many enrichment activities that Kanzi can choose to participate in to have fun and make his day more interesting. The door is always open, so he can choose when to start and stop playing.

Back in 2019 I got to visit Kanzi along with other Iowa State University students. I brought him some pine needles because I heard he liked them and I told him about it. He got excited then used his lexigram to tell me to get him orange juice. I told him I couldn't so he then used his lexigram as well as pointing behind me to give me directions on where to get the orange juice. He understood I could bring him stuff but didn't quite understand that I was not allowed to bring him orange juice. He then kept touching the lexigram for "chase" and patting himself then pointing to me, so we played "chase". We would stand on opposite sides then run and tackle the glass in the middle. He got really hyped about it. It was super fun. Love my boi Kanzi

You know how some games show you icons on the edge of the screen for things that are off-screen? kinda like a direction indicator. It might help Kanzi to have a green button/bar on the side of the screen that points in the direction of the next target when there is no target on screen. This is incredible! It's cool because we're so closely related to bonobos that we can easily understand each other's body language and facial expressions. That’s exactly what I thought! A twitch stream like that would blow up and garner TONS of donations in a VERY short amount of time, especially when people are made aware of what the money will be used for. If you approach the idea of teaching Kanzi how to attack mobs, what might be an interesting way to do so is by having the mobs in the way of his treats. I think it is important that the way to approach mobs is not through punishment, but through the suspension of reward. For example, punishing Kanzi for dying would cause unnecessary stress and frustration, but if Kanzi instead sees it as an obstacle to get to his treat, he may be less frustrated. This might be able to be done in two ways: one, the mobs are merely there with barrier blocks, and Kanzi must kill the mob to proceed; two, you use a mob like a zombie who, if Kanzi gets to close, attacks him. There would be no punishment, only the prevention of him accessing treats. Take in mind I am not a scientist or anything like that, but it just seemed like an interesting idea.

i have a mild phobia of apes and large monkeys but kanzi never rlly set it off for some reason! i was just like hell yeah gamer youre doing amazing! i think part of it was that he always looked so calm and like he was enjoying himself :] i loved to see/hear that he gets lots of mental and physical stimulation and health, this was such a fascinating and fun video to watch.
