Thanks for sharing. I have the 4G one based off your other video but I haven’t had a chance to use it yet. I’m optimistic nevertheless based on your review. Also, where did you get the mount you have in your closer to hold the router?

Thank you! The JourneyXTR is a solid choice. The mount in my video for the 5G is just a bit wider to accomodate its depth, but this is the model that I used with the JourneyXTR: amzn.to/3YyAEhO

Hello. I think you have convinced me to go for this. I am a newbie though to this so apologies for my ignorance but my two questiona are: For the sim slots, does this mean I actually have to take my sim card out of my cell phone and place in this or does it come with the needed sim cards once I select a plan. I cannot take my sim out of my phone as I need my phone while trying to work on wifi. Second, if I buy the 5G plan and this newer model, am assuming if 4G is only what is available it will still work correct? Pls and thanks!

Great questions. No SIM cards required, so basically it's plug and play. TravlFi takes care of all the SIM cards and data plans behind the scenes, so you only pay them for the monthly plan you choose and they handle the rest. It'll come preloaded with SIM cards, but you never need to remove them or reinsert them. And, you're correct about the 4G...if no 5G signal in your area, it'll fall back to 4G automatically...behind the scenes...you won't even know other than the fact the speed may be slightly slower.

I reviewed the comments and still had a few questions. I’m going to ask some very detailed questions that should be pretty simple for you to answer, you have incredible detail in your videos. The sale price was hard to pass up. 1) your video states 3 carriers but only 2 sim slots. The device has 4G failover. With that said is 5G service limited to what sim cards you have which from what I learned is Verizon and T mobile. How would one get att 5G service, especially if we dont have an att sim. Second part I would guess the 4G is eSIM, meaning again to get all three service providers at 4G would need cards or eSIM? 2) I didn’t see in the video or website, does this device have a WiFi extender like the 4G device? 3) as a test, not for normal usage… does the power supply adapter from the black 4G device fit in the 5G device? I see on the travlfi website they offer a 12V hardwire adapter for the 4G, and I’m curious if that would work with the 5G device too. shop.travlfi.com/travlfi-journeyxtr-12v-hardwire-power-cable/

Great question. 1) My understanding is the carrier situation is completely fluid mainly as the 3 big carriers can change their agreements with MVNOs...so while right now it is Verizon and T-Mobile on the 5G device. It's my understanding AT&T isn't willing to do 5G by itself for MVNOs but all of that could change in future. TravlFi seems to be constantly improving their products and services, so I have no doubt they will make sure those agreements are favorable for their customers regardless of which carriers. I think the 4G fallback is using same SIM cards, but I could be mistaken. 2) The 5G router does have a WiFi repeater. 3) I am not sure about the DC tip/barrel size. I'll have to double check and report back on that one.

@@AdventureRocks excellent feedback. Thank you for your time. I believe in your work and information and also in TravlFi too. I hope they continue to grow and improve as this seems to be a very competitive option for RV’s with the easiest set up too. I believe GDRV has used TravlFi in place of winegard gear. Add to them Brinkley and a Forest River.

Any options recommended for an external antenna? Out West, we have some very spotty service! An external antenna might be the diff between ZERO and some service....
@AdventureRocks

Great question. The antenna terminals are industry standard as far as I know (on the router itself). TravlFi does have their official antenna here: travlfi.sjv.io/21OjbG But, I've been really impressed with the built-in antennas...definitely stronger than your cell phone. I haven't tried the external antennas yet myself, but it could only help the signal in my opinion, which as you know stronger signal can equal faster speed.

@@cheyenneterry6947 Speedtest.net should tell you when you run test, but another way is via admin/control panel on router. After logging-in look on status page and it should show there. By default if you have Verizon service in the area it'll likely connect to Verizon. You can change carrier manually by clicking "Internet" (left gray pane) > Cellular (row) - "Edit" (w/ pencil icon) > And re-arrange (drag/drop) SIM1 and SIM2 to desired order ...then save. Just be careful not to change any other settings beyond dragging/dropping the order of SIM1 and SIM2 (eSIM should be last).

Thank you for this video. When I boondock in remote areas, my Verizon MiFi becomes unreliable. I am hoping that the TravFi 4G version will be an improvement. I like the fact that I can stop and re-start the data plan on a monthly basis. I will probably only need to use it a few months per year, since much of the time I am boondocking near major towns/ cities where there is good cell phone service.

Thank you, great point. So far (knock on wood) over the last year I have never found myself in a remote area where the TravlFi router would not pull in at least some signal that was usuable among the 3x carriers...sometimes it's been only 1 of 3 carriers that register, but that's really my favorite feature of the device as I don't have to maintain separate data plans. I think the built-in antennas really help. And the month to month is so convenient.

@@kip5588 sorry about that! It is the small wide or SW ... That's for the larger 5G router in my video as shown. The smaller 4G JourneyXTR uses the small or S size. I use them for all kinds of vertical mountings from Blu-ray players to switches and such. Very handy.

@@AdventureRocks I see when you mounted it to the wall you had the antennas spread out flush with the wall do you feel like that gives it better reception versus having the modem sitting on a counter with the antennas extended vertically?

I'm assuming you were testing the travlfi speed over wifi, what if you 'hard wired' to it? I'm thinking the speed may even be quicker, that's what the lan port is for right? Great review thanks.
@AdventureRocks
@AdventureRocks Ай бұрын
Thank you. You raise a great point! Yes, I was connected over 5.0GHz (vs 2.4GHz) Wi-Fi via router on all tests, on same MacBook Air M2, and all relatively close within 5-10 ft of 5G router itself. So, you're probably correct if I had done ethernet hardwired for testing, likely speed could have gotten slight bump in speed compared to Wi-Fi. That's another nice feature on router that it does have that LAN port. One could easily plug directly in there or even connect another gigabit switch for further expansion. Again, great point. Thank you.
