Earlier this year a friend had bought an old stock 2023 1500 high country and I asked him to see if he could find the 12 volt socket so he looked all over in the cab and was totally stumped ... then read up on it and realized wtf, there is none !. He stated as well that he has a GPS and this or that other device that was geared to plug into the 12v socket. Its not like its an obsolete socket to plug into, there are still items made to this day that are designed around plugging into 12 volts and happens to be that socket system. Without a doubt GM should be bringing that back and also creating a install kit with instructions on how and where to hook up electrically for anyone wanting to install one or more 12 volt "traditional" power sockets into a vehicle that was made without one.

Ran into this problem with my 2024 Chevrolet 2500hd, no 12 volt outlet! Plunged my Garmin Trend off road GPS into trucks USB C port, message said if you want full screen brightness, use Gamin 12 volt adapter. I plunged a 120 Volt AC power strip into Chevrolet outlet behind the rear seat, ran in under drivers seat to center of front floor. Bought 120 Volt to 12 Volt dc adapter to plug Garmin Trend in to. The power strip also has 3 USB ports and is powered on when the truck is running, very convenient to have extra outlets on power strip. Wattage isn’t the issue as it’s a calculated number as the product of voltage and current. If the Furrion camera requires a 12volt input, anything lower than that won’t work. People throw around wattage numbers as if it’s the end all be all answer, but it’s only an indicator of the total capacity of the system/port. If the correct combination of voltage AND current isn’t present, your end device won’t work.
@AdventureRocks4 ай бұрын
Great question! USB with Power Delivery (USB PD) has different versions/specs, but the voltage is variable up to 20V in this case. So identifying the wattage helps determine if the port is powerful enough to supply power to an accessory. For example, the MacBook shown in the video uses an OEM charger with nominal 20V @ 1.75A = 35W. But, it'll take a higher powered charger concerning the watts/amps, as long as the voltage is in range still. And, with the Furrion it only needs a mere 12V @ 500mA = 6W, so that's how it is feasible in this setup. Basically just have to make sure voltage is between 5V and 20V and then wattage under 40W (Volts X Amps = Watts). I was surprised to learn how flexible USB PD is...it's been around for a few years, but becomming more popular to the point GM put it in the truck. And there are newer forms of USB PD that are even more powerful, but not found in the GM trucks, yet.

@@AdventureRocks , Since the USB-C "power delivery" (USB PD) OEM outlet apparently drains power continuously (even at no load) due to the voltage conversion of 12 VDC to 5-20 VDC, I think GM always shuts it down after about 10 min of an off event to insure minimum drain of the main batteries. Accordingly, I think I'm going to just install a fused old fashion cigarette lighter outlet that will have 0 watts of parasitic power drain to run my white/yellow rooftop construction flashing light when that is occasionally needed during commercial Christmas Light work in the street when the truck is switched off. I hear you, the fewer ports seems odd. I wonder though if the USB with Power Delivery standard is what has changed things as before one could only send 5V over USB, but with Power Delivery one can do up to 48V and 240W. Granted in GM's application it appears to be the more basic spec, which I believe is up to 20V and potentially up to 40W. I haven't checked the ones on the rear yet.

The USB C to 1.35mm plug does not work. The Furrion 7 inch monitor needs 12 volts and the USB C only outputs 5 volts. The USB C to 12 volt socket did work. Apparently the inline box boosts the voltage from 5 to 12 volts.
@AdventureRocks4 ай бұрын
I hear you...I thought USB was always 5V too, but concerning USB-C with Power Delivery (PD for short) the voltage can vary based on the wattage supplied to it according to the official PD protocol. For example, in the video here it is supplying 20V to the MacBook at 2.0amps (40W). With the latest PD 3.1 it can go up to 48V and wattage of up to 240W (USB PD 3.1)...again with the proper power supply feeding it. GM seems to have a previous PD standard in use on my truck, thus the lower wattage. I think the challenge is, while PD is an official protocol, not all cables and outlets advertised as being PD compatible comply with the protocol 100% so there can be compatibility issues. Here's a link with more info: www.usb.org/usb-charger-pd

@@JamesMcCall-n8s Great point! The W/T and Custom models still retain the 12V outlet with previous gen interior. Maybe they'll bring the 12V outlets back for the rest of us in a refresh soon.

Thank you. Great point! It's my understanding the Chevy W/T and Custom trims with previous interior/dash still include the 12V port, along with the GMC Pro trim, but then the remainder with updated interior forgo it.

Great find! Now, before I go and spend even more money fixing all the deficiencies (adding 12v power outlet, buying adapter for my furion camera etc) please dream up all the other Easter eggs GM didn’t bother to tell us they fixed! And if you’ve been living under a rock so have I. Would have never guessed an in vehicle USB of any flavor would support anything over 5 volts (+/-).

If they are going this direction why can’t they just put the usb ports on top of the dash where we’d be plugging in all our aftermarket devices?
@AdventureRocks4 ай бұрын
Great suggestion. That could be very helpful to have some more up top on dash where the accessories are typically suctioned to windshield. I remember my RAM trucks all had a 12V port on top right there and it came in handy.

Recently I was thinking that a usb port on the back of the mirror for dash cams would be a great idea.

Great video. However, the MacBook’s smallest charger is 65W, not 35W.
@AdventureRocks4 ай бұрын
Thank you! And, great question! Surprisingly on the new M2 and M3 MacBook Air, 35W is standard equipment. But, you can upgrade to a 70W if desired. I can imagine 35W sounds low, but the Apple silicone chips are very efficient, so less wattage required. I was surprised to see the truck feeding 40W to it though.

I wish they would bring back a real cigarette light port. I don't even smoke but they seem to come handy when I had one. I ordered a Chevy smoking package in the past, and it came loose with a cup holder ashtray and a cigarette lighter to insert but no port to plug into. What a joke.

Sorry to hear. Do you have a 2024 with same refreshed interior like mine in video?
@dd54504 ай бұрын
The power adapter at the rear view mirror works sweet. I had the exact same Furion issue. There is a youtube video that shows putting a gen5diy plug and play harness from the mirror camera box to a 3.5mm barrel plug on a wire. Im sure there are competing solutions, but this works well. However, the website doesn’t list the 24 gm hd as compatible. I called and they verified it works. I installed and it does-well.

@kempie99014 ай бұрын
Is that 40 watts at 5, 9, 12, or 19 volts? Either way to be honest, 40 watts is terrible. Thats like 3.3 amps. So 1/6th of that the old 12v outlets were capable of.
@AdventureRocks4 ай бұрын
Great question. As best I can tell the 40W is max output regardless of voltage. With my MacBook in the video it was 20V = so 2A, but you're correct at 12V it'll be 3.3amps. The USB PD spec is kinda neat the way it can function at different voltages. Maybe it doesn't completely make up for the fact the 10A 12V outlet is missing, but it at least helps cover a lot of the devices we might use with a USB PD cable.

Great information, but I must say the Furrion cameras are expensive garbage. I had one and the lens clouded up around 2 years and Furrion doesn’t warranty it. I have my RV parked in the shade, so low UV storage.

Its dumb. My 17 High Country had 12volt outlet and 120 V AC in the console. They could have easily hidden away a 12volt port.
