hey Justin, Ive always enjoyed your channel but have 2 big questions for you in regards to your video- how did you legally camp on the glacier within the National Park, and two- why did you say there are polar bears in the area? Grizzly and black bears yes- but not polar bears.

I have used LMNT recently. I did the Black Forest Trail in Pennsylvania (45 mi trail regarded as the hardest in PA) and it was the first trail that I used LMNT. Honestly, I was put off by the flavor at first because I didn't expect the saltiness of it and I only put it in 16 oz of water (it is recommended to put a pack in 33 oz if I am not mistaken). But, after that initial bottle, I followed the directions and the saltiness was not bad at all. I will say that I think it helped me maintain my energy because I was sweating quite a bit on that trip due to the constant ascents and descents and replacing my electrolytes was needed. At camp on the second night I made some coffee and mixed the chocolate salt flavor in with the coffee and it tasted great. Once I use the supply of LMNT I have now, I do plan on buying some more (probably will stick with citrus salt, orange salt, raspberry salt, and chocolate salt).

Maybe a far out thought but it could seem like certain products potentially sleep warmer and perform better than others, depending on how well manufacturers sponsor or do giveaways? Many of these KZbinrs have got to be the best advertisers for the companies and they can put the squeeze to any company that doesn't give them as much money and free merch as they would like. Just a theory. But with lesser performing products tested in milder climates Justin has seemed more enthusiastic in his presentations. For reference, he is standing on a glacier here gentlemen.

Remember that in a lot of places the ground temperature can actually warmer than the air temperature because it can hold heat from beneath. On a glacier you'd get none of that so it is probably quite different than other conditions on regular ground.

I bought regular moonlite, atleast it is supposed to be bit sturdier and it has a mesh seat. Both meaningfull for me, but that weight. Elite certainly doesn't look bad but I don't think I can just shell money like that in a foreseeable future. I can wait few years for a good deal or just be happy with what I have.

Thrilled to see the improvements to the valve system. I'd like to know more about their response to your warmth issue. I'd love to know how this compares in the same conditions to the newer XTherm NXT. I like my current Nemo Insulated pad and would be willing to upgrade, but only if it is truly warmer than the Thermarest XTherm.

Definitely interesting results Justin. I'm glad you really test gear rather than just review it. I jumped on the S2S Etherlight XT extreme after a few youtubers put up initial reviews. I wish I'd waited until people had actually had a winter on them because they're not quite as warm as the R value suggests. They do best inflated until they have no give but then the comfort of the 4" thickness is all but gone. I think I'll try the new Xtherm NXT eventually. I live near the rockies in Alberta too so I know how cold it can get even in summer.

I feel advection becomes more of an issue with large thickness airpads. This is something the ASTM standard doesn't quite nail I feel. I have experience with various editions of the Thermorests, some with mylar, some without; but all with the triangular matrix (which does control the movement of air in decent way). I've also had experience with the S2S Etherlight Insulated. At 1C in my backyard, I agree that despite the S2S R3.2 (or so rating), I felt cold, even compared to my non-mylar Thermorest. I felt warmest on the Xlite NXT. While high R values suggest better use for cold ground/air situations (based on ASTM testing), without some way to control the sideways movement of air within the pad (especially in large volume pads like the S2S Etherlight and perhaps the Nemo as you've described), any air in the pad that you do warm up underneath you will just end up advecting and mixing with cold air in contact with the any part of the pad that is not in contact with your body (i.e, sides, any part of the surface outside of your body imprint [or sleeping bag if you use a mummy]). This problem is exacerbated by every single movement you make on the pad. I think this is where the Thermorest pads (with the triangular matrix) have nailed this issue and have consistently garnered praise for best real-world use warmth-to-weight ratio. Not perfect, but still consistently at/near the top and remains the "standard" to what others measure themselves to. OTOH, can it be argued that there's a limit to what size a pad is acceptable if the goal is preserving body heat? Maybe you don't want a pad that's too much larger than, say, your mummy sleeping bag in order to minimize advective heat loss? A non-issue if you use a quilt.

@@alexk1486About 6 years ago I picked up a returned Exped DownMat 9 LW for less than half MSRP, I used it once at about 10-15F in conjunction with a NEMO Sonic 0F and was chilly. Definitely more chilly than its R=7.8 (IIRC) rating should have left me feeling. I think Justin reviewed or tested one and said his thought was the down doesn’t evenly distribute. I’ve used my 2022 Xtherm down to around -10F with a FF Eider -10F bag (w/6oz overfill) and was actually uncomfortably warm. It’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, the Exped was used on a wood bunk in a cabin near the summit of Mt Chocorua NH while the XTherm was used in a tent with a Reflectix full floor liner that I made. Maybe I’ll bring both out for a 2-nighter this winter.

The ASTM standard should probably change so the hot plate on top is only about as wide as the typical persons body contact area with the pad. From videos I’ve watched, it looks like right now the hot and cold plates are both the full width of a pad. You do get some convective heat loss out the long end of the pad, but not the sides.

I’m looking forward to seeing more testing of that sleeping pad. I’m concerned that the flat insulation layers will allow cold to enter the pad from the side. I am also looking forward to finding out the price of the new chair and pads. I currently own the Nemo Moonlite that I got on sale for 50% off. My biggest gripe is the fact that it doesn’t have a ground sheet for snow or sand, so I’m looking forward to seeing pricing on the new model.

In June of 1979, I camped at the bottom of Mt. Blanc in France. I had a summer weight sleeping bag with a zipper that didn't work. I froze! The air would come down over the glacier at night and the temperature dropped dramatically. Once I figured out that I needed to cover my head, it was much better. Can you use one of the laser thermometers to show us the difference in temperature between the ground and the top of the pads?

Great test! Thank you very much. Re: smell and bears. Mylar bags (usually PET film with aluminum foil sandwiched in between) make the best smell reducing bags btw. This is because aluminum is impermeable to gases (unlike most plastics). If the material can't diffuse gas through it, then it won't allow smell to diffuse through either. I spent awhile researching vacuums, vacuum systems, and vacuum insulation panels for a project (made my own vacuum insulated cooler). Vacuum insulation panels (VIP's for short) are essentially mylar bags (though I think nylon and polyethylene combos are used instead of PET) with a core, spacing material in it like fumed silica. Getters are put inside and then the huge majority of the air is sucked out (minus some stray stray gas molecules here and there) and then it is sealed/welded closed while under de-pressure. Some VIP's are rated to be effective, high insulators for up to 50 years. Most of that is due to the aluminum foil that is sandwiched inside the plastic films. The aluminum really slows down gaseous exchange. Not many materials can stand up to a medium to high vacuum without either 1. offgassing, or 2. allowing some gaseous diffusion. Aluminum does neither. VIP insulation doesn't last longer, simply because the aluminum is sandwiched between plastic films and so there is always some small amount of plastic material that is exposed to the ambient conditions, rather than pure aluminum. That small amount of exposed plastic does allow some gas diffusion and offgassing to happen (which is why industry also puts getters in there, to absorb these). Point being, is that if you roll it up well, mylar bags will extremely, extremely limit food smell diffusion out into the general environment. Bears, while they have a simply amazing sense of smell, are not magical creatures that break the laws of physics. If a material is good enough to hold a vacuum long term, it is good enough to severely reduce smell-gaseous diffusion (since smell and gas diffusion are intrinsically connected, if you limit/reduce the latter, you reduce the latter). You just have to make sure it is sealed well, for that you want to fold it over itself several times (at least 3) and maybe use a piece of tape or some velcro to keep it closed. Much better than nylofume bags etc. The "secret sauce" again, being the aluminum foil. Cheers fellow Justin

I do wonder about the thermals of sleeping on a glacier vs snow. Snow would insulate with the air pockets and I think ice has roughly 4 times the thermal conductivity of water. It would have been great to see a head to head of the tensor extreme with anXTherm NXT but I suspect one would sleep cold with either pad with those conditions...

Tough call, but I got the new X-Therm since it had a MW Mummy (very wide with sparks & plenty of noise). The Nemo certainly looked more comfy, but the mummy shape works nice in my hammocks. The Thermarest is so wide I could almost drop back to the standard Nemo width, but I am glad TR offered the nice, wide mummy pad. I only assume it is as warm as the older X-Therm. Cool sparks & electric lighning strikes when you put away the sleeping bag.

How much of the top surface of the Nemo was exposed to cold air? It's not just the ground you have to worry about. You also have radiative heat loss from the top of the pad.

Maybe something like a Reflectix pad sleeve with the center cut out to let heat that transfers through the bottom of your bag into the pad. I haven’t been able to find an R-value for Reflectix by itself, only in conjunction with air spaces and building materials. Though the floor liner I made for a tent did allow me to put bare hands and stocking feet on it at around -10F.

I'm curious about this, too. I know I definitely sleep warmer when my quilt drapes over the edges of my pad, rather than be strapped close to my body. It's one of the reasons why I stick to a regular width pad rather than the wide.

Super excited for the new Nemo Elite Moonlite chair to come out. I have two versions of the Helinox Zero and Highback but I still fill like I'm sliding out of them, and the sitting area of the chairs seem to be cut short to save weight. Am I the only person who is expecting this issue? I've also been heavily reliant on my Klymit Motion 60 pack due to the comfort of Air Frame. I suffer a lot of vertebra damage and the frame really has been an enjoyment for me. I'm curious about trying the Arc Haul and seeing if I'll get the same or better results while carrying 18-28 pounds max.

I don’t backpack anymore because I am at least as old as your father, maybe older, but I am still an avid daypacker and still using the Osprey Syncro 20 that you recommend a while back. The 'coldness' experience is primarily a result of being on an ice cube. It is all about "Heatflow" (Cold Flow) transfer. The ice is an excellent "conductor' of cold. But you also have to think about the ice as a 'cold sink'. This phenomenon is used in Food Processing industry to quick freeze/chill foods. And part of that is the phase change btu requirement to have the ice go from solid to liquid. As good as a multi-baffle pad is at slowing heat transfer a closed cell foam pad under this pad would have made a world of difference. While we experience this as 'Cold Flow" it is really about the heat flow out of our body. Closed cell Foam is always going to beat baffled air but any kind of strand/fiber fill insulation mat will also beat even baffled air.

I have 2 Mammut King Size pump mats that are REAL 8.2 r-value mats. They weigh 1560 grams but are good down to -40C. I have tried them that low in Northern Norway and I slept like a baby. It’s too bad they don’t make them anymore but the ultralight boom killed them. I don’t trust any lightweight pads in extreme conditions.

3 inch thick garbage couch foam has about a rating of 6.0 and it will keep you toasty hot on ground like that, where do they get these 8.5 astm ratings from anyway? Very deceptive in the way that heat is stored and insulated.

Xmid Pro 2+ floor dimensions and weight? Guessing 54" wide and around 22oz but just confirming. Tensor sounds disappointing. I wonder if the baffle fabric connections are transferring cold or otherwise limiting insulation ability. Say what you want about Thermarest but they know what they're doing with regards to durability and insulation ratings.

Hi Justin, when will you do a full review of the Moonlight Elite chair please? I’d love to know more, I’ve never carried a backpacking chair before but due to health reasons I’m going to have to and again due to health reasons I need it to be as light as possible. I’d love to know what you think of the elite. I’m in Australia so I can’t buy the REI chair. The windburner melts snow basically as well as the reactor and weighs less. I’ve used both on wa volcanos and in the alpine to melt snow.

shoulda tested just adding a silver matt on top of the pad. ps. not sure black surface is the way to go, pps. do you think the moisture in the air would have made the sleep cold? 0deg is still very moist? -10 would drop all the moisture from the air?

My favorite Pad is still the S2S Etherlight XT . I don’t know why but I never get cold on it and it’s so comfortable and I love the pumpsack that is the stuffsack too .

I'm puzzled as to why you felt cold from the ice coming through the pad with that R value. Decades ago, I slept two nights on a glacier on my original version of the self-inflating Thermarest pad that was only 1.5 inches thick and stayed toasty warm. I don't know what the R value of those old Thermarests was, but I imagine it would be much less than the one quoted for the Nemo pad.

There are great points and some rough stretches to this video. As an average viewer looking for the best resources of information, I am constantly looking for beta on the latest gear to make some serious decisions. There are fairly large costs associated with these decisions and the internet has helped me keep more informed. I'd like to continue to use you, Justin, as a resource. However there are some things that I need from you. Here are some pros: I loved that you are one of the first to show this gear. Thank you! I'm so excited for the new Nemo lightweight chair and will definitely be buying one. Glad you had it with you. I appreciate that you made a huge effort to go some place else besides your backyard to review this gear. I also loved that you wanted to test the mattress on a super cold surface in real world conditions and the glacier definitely fit that bill. Awesome! I also love your passion. It is obvious that you and I think alike in terms of not only loving gear but in getting out and relishing being in the outdoors. That is evident. Now for some cons: -So confusing why you chose the Uberlight vs an Xtherm? You could have made a massive impression on so many of us if you would have brought the Xtherm and compared it to the Nemo Extreme. Having hiked so far to a glacier, this would have been huge. And trying to justify sleeping on the 2 Rvalue Uberlite on a glacier comparing it to the 8.3 Rvalue Nemo Extreme (something about the air surrounding the mattresses vs the ground???) was just confusing. And after the 'reason you brought the Uberlite' was introduced, there was no mention of you using it or comparing it to anything. Big miss. -Your description of the MSR Reactor was just painful. The only thing I got was that it was expensive. Why is it expensive? Is that the reason why someone shouldn't buy it, because it is expensive? I would have loved to hear why. Radiant burner, 100% windproof (there was a pretty good breeze that I could hear while you were talking), incredible efficiency, consistent output due to pressure regulation, doesn't simmer very well, a bit heavy, etc. Another big miss. -Comfort is so subjective. Your comfort and my comfort could be completely different. Way too much time was spent describing your subjective opinion of comfort. I would have liked to have you spend more time on why the mattress was colder that you thought. No mentioned of what sleeping bag you used. No in-depth discussion of the nature of the cold you experienced. These would have been infinitely more important to me than why or why not you thought it was comfortable. People who are buying this mattress MUST be insulated from the ground. Comfort is put on the backburner. If I was going to Himalayas, Alaska or Canadian Rockies in the winter where the ambient temp is -25F during the warmest parts of the day, staying warm is life and death. How soft the top layer or the dimpling of the mattress top has little importance to me. The purpose of this mattress is warmth, not comfort. Thanks again for introducing these products by actually taking them into the backcountry and testing them. You should get huge kudos for that! I was a bit let down by the information. I will continue to search online to see if I can find the answers I need before purchasing.

I've skied the Wapta numerous times and skied the Bow-Yoho traverse as well, you will love doing it! The Wapta is less committing than the Bow-Yoho from a navigation and terrain standpoint, so it's a great way to see the area. Highly recommend mid March to mid April for more light, warmer temps and a more stable snowpack. We were up on the icefields this summer doing some mountaineering and all that bare ice was heartbreaking. The toe of the glacier above the Bow Hut has receded so much, omg. As for sleeping pads, the first sleeping pad I ever used in the winter without a closed cell foam pad with it was the X-Therm, and I can't say enough about the now-old-standard for winter capable pads.
