To describe the pain of stinging nettle for those fortunate enough not to have fallen into it before, it feels almost like a bee sting or an ant bite. Though unlike bee stings and ant bites using baking soda/water, human saliva, or dish soap and water can help soothe the pain.

I eat a lot of nettles they’re great 😁. It’s best to pick the new shoots in spring, they’re much more tender. Also it’s thought that eating too many nettles from older plants can cause a build up of calcium oxalate crystals and cause kidney stones. The seeds are edible too, they are nutty. I make energy balls with them. And the root is edible. Another project you might like is you can make a very strong cordage from the fibres in the stems. Love your vids by the way 🤘

My grandma used to make salad from stinging nettles in the early spring, from new young sprouts. She'd also boil them a little, then add roasted onions, garlic, oil and done. It was pretty good. But not good to the point of justifying going through the hassle of harvesting it. That's why after she passed away, i've never eaten nettle salad again. On one hand i appreciate it, because that's something very unique (in this case taste) i can associate with childhood time spent at grandparents place. I still remember it's taste, and it reminds me of careless times of innocent childhood. I'm happy with my life, but once in a while i wish i could back in time even for an hour, to re-live those special moments with my sweet grandparents, that are no longer around. Remember, kids, appreciate your grandparents, they are special. Their love and care is unique to them, no one will be able to replicate it. No one. Call them, if you're far, hug them, if you're near, tell them how you love them. Trust me, it's worth it.

I mean stinging nettles as food isn't anything new. My Austrian grandmother prepares them from time to time. Mix them half and half with spinach to make it less pungent.
@aquariuslibrarian
@aquariuslibrarian 2 ай бұрын
If you grip the leafs tightly they wont sting you, so you can harvest them without gloves :) you can also roll them with a rolling pin before processing them to stop the stinging. Also, theyre super nutritious! If i remember correctly, the have about five times as much iron as spinach does, and a lot of vitamin c too. I also heard that you can make fiber from the stems, similar to hemp. A truly amazing plant!

Stinging nettle is actually super healthy, and can be used as a substitute for spinach! In fact, I've heard stories of how people managed to get by during wartime by eating nettle and dandelion (another really healthy plant). Nettle goes well in place of spinach in spinach pastries, in soups and the stinging nettle tea has a nice, mild, herbal flavour. One important note for future plant harvesting: it's recommended not to take plants that grow by roadsides because of the pollution, but to go a bit deeper into forests and meadows and harvest from there.

I love stinging nettle. My grandmother told me how to handle these bad guys. ^^ They taste great as soup, salad or dryed as a tea. If you want to eat them raw: Just put the leaves between paper towels and roll over it with a glass. That will remove the stinging hairs. Speaking of hair: They even make a real good hair treatment. You can eat the seeds raw, too. They don't sting and you can eat them right away from the plant. You can even roast the seeds and cover them in chocolate. They taste like nuts then.

if you didnt know this yet: wear a glove and brush over the stinging nettles from bottom to top, that will break the needles, then wash it with cold water and continue with preperation. you can eat all of the plant tho the stems usually arent that good (pretty woody) you can eat them raw as a salad if you want, or you can cook them like spinach. you can also make soup etc with them. they are really good and i´ve been eating stinging nettles for most of my life atp 😂

I bet the reason it lasted so long is he kept scratching it. Thats the easiest thing to do since it itches, but it drastically worsens and prolongs the pain

over here in the uk if u get stung by that plant (they are everywhere and hard to see) people say to put viniger on a paper towel and rub it on the sting. it really does help

@itsConnorCreates of course! I actually used to participate in those competitions back in I think 2018 and after every competition they would give us a glass of like juice mixed with vinager and although you can't taste it very well it definitely helped.

I remember as a child I learned that you can actually eat stinging nettle when some other kids were doing it. I have eatin it just directly the way it comes in nature, and it wont always sting but there is some risk. But if you just wrap another edible leaf around it and chew it, that pretty much guarantees you wont get stung

In Serbia there is so many stinging nettles everywhere. I pick them with my hands you get used to it after a while, I dry them and make nettle tea. Also nettles are healthier when not next to a road because they pick up the smoke from cars.
