A little update: Cadmium free paint and Cadmium hue are BOTH CAD FREE apparently! I had no idea! Naming paints “Cad Free” is a marking tactic to make it seem safer (which I fell for lol). Shout out to all the people who let me know! And Prussian blue is still very much a color, just not for crayola’s brand btw. I should have clarified Thanks for watching and thanks for everyone’s input! Y’all teach me so much 👏

This cad hue is the less light fast, less opaque PR112 or Naphthol Red. As for the dangers, it falls in the list of pigments that are safe if you are not eating the paint or breathing in pigment dust by for example making paints, sanding, or using pastels. That said, Lead, cadmium, and cobalt are not good for you or the environment and can lead to heavy metal poisoning but they are not going to be adsorbed by the skin. Paris green on other hand...

I had a version of spray chalk when I was a kid in the 90s! I lived in an apartment so the neighbors went bonkers acting like I was permanently altering the 3 foot space in front of our door. My mom just silently filled a bucket of water and threw it on the chalk to get rid of it. We also couldn't use regular sidewalk chalk because some neighbors hated joy.

Your not alone. In 1997 my sister and I were drawing with sidewalk chalk and a cop walked up to us, took our chalk, and said to us "you can't draw on the sidewalk it's vandalism get your parents so I can give them a ticket and a talking to" we argued that it was just sidewalk chalk and would wash away with water but the cop insisted it was vandalism. We got our parents and the cop reamed them out about us using chalk and gave them a fine. we found out after 2 years and many fines that the old lady across the street was calling the cops on us every other day of the week just because she hated children and didn't want any living on her block

If a paint has "hue" in the name, that means it's using some alternative pigment- so neither one has cadmium in it. The "hue" version should still look the same as the original, though, so you're not missing out on anything. Edit: I didn't know Crayola replaced Prussian Blue with Midnight Blue. At least other brands still have it.

Ok I have a REALLY cute story involving rose art crayons. Back in I think 2nd or 3rd grade I gave my teacher a crayon for no reason. She asked me “why blue?” and my answer was apparently “because it’s a special color” or something vague like that. MANY years later at my high school graduation, that same teacher handed me a letter with the exact same crayon from back then attached praising me for how much I’ve grown since then. Idk why but the fact that she returned the crayon to me when I graduated high school made me tear up it was like HOW did she manage to keep this exact crayon for so long. Especially since I was a kid and there was barely a reason for giving it to her in the first place back then because yknow kids just do things because. And to add an extra coincidence, my graduation dress happened to be the EXACT same shade of blue that was in those rose art 24 packs.

The only critique I would say I have about it is that maybe if the stencil were arranged in a different direction say off-centre or even diagonally, MAYBE that might have made you like the piece a little more? But it wasn't a bad piece all together! And as always, so much fun to watch!

what I find stupid is that they say spray chalk for kids is gonna “encourage” graffiti. I can kind of see it but at the same time any art supply can be used for vandalism. so by that logic ban chalk, any markers, all paints, any kind of art supplies that leaves a mark because I can tag or vandalize with sidewalk chalk, apple barrel paint, and a crayon. graffiti can’t be stopped and can be done with just about anything that can leave a mark of color

@@OwlGirl258 Might it be possible to compound one's own paint with cadmium obtained from a laboratory chemical supply house? I notice that many chemistry channels seem to have no difficulty getting various gnarly chemicals as long as they aren't notorious precursors for making illicit drugs. And cadmium wouldn't be. But again laboratory grade precautions would be required. Don't do it anywhere you can't contain the residue and use adequate personal protection.

Just thinking about the Kid-fitti, while that "lawmaker" was worried about kids doing "real" graffiti, I'm thinking about the generation of Street Artists and Muralists we might have lost because they didn't have this product to practice with as kids. Also the Prussian Blue thing is extra stupid because paint makers (especially gouache and watercolor) still has PB27, which every brand calls Prussian Blue, so really what was the point LOL.

Hey Rae! Honestly I kinda love the cherry artwork. I think it would work really well as a print since the art supplies are not ideal preservation quality. One note, the “cadmium-containing” paint you used from winsor and newton is actually a cadmium hue (the name was cadmium red hue), which means it’s not real cadmium. I don’t know about acrylics, but with watercolor artists, w&n has been very secretive about what pigments they use for their cadmium hue colors, and some of them have been found not to be lightfast. Cadmium-containing paints do still exist and are commonly used. Looking at pigment codes is an easy and reliable way to tell what a paint contains, and the fact that artist-grade paints exist that do not disclose pigments is a problem for many artists. Their pigment codes are PY35, PY37, PO20, and PR108.

Cadmium may be toxic, but it is very lightfast. Most colors that are similar to the cadmium line are fugitive. Chrome yellow was a favorite of the impressionists and was used as a replacement for cadmium, but now their paintings are going through a process of darkening and are not as vibrant as they originally were. There are many toxic pigments that remain popular with professionals due to their stable, lightfast nature. As a general rule in paint making, toxic pigments are most dangerous in their powdered form when they can be inhaled and absorbed through the lungs. Once the binder is added, they are less dangerous and one would have to work harder to get poisoned from the paint. Basically, don't snort or lick the paint. Giving the cadmium such a low rating feels a bit shortsighted. There is a reason why big names like Schmincke and Windsor & Newton openly sell genuine cadmium paints.
@Lalupin464
@Lalupin464 Жыл бұрын
I think describing chrome yellow as a replacement for cadmium is inaccurate. Chrome yellow is a lead based pigment and it’s use as a paint has been dated back to 1810. Cadmium colors were discovered in 1817 and their use in Artist paint didn’t occur until the late 19th century, and cadmium sulfide, on which cadmium pigments are based, are considered considerably less toxic than lead. Chrome yellow was definitely more widely known to artists than cadmium during the time of the impressionists and post-impressionists.

Except that it's full of misinformation. She's clearly way too lazy to do even basic research. The "cadmium" paint she bought was a cadmium "hue", which means none of those two paints contained any cadmium. Plus these days, cadmium particles are treated in a way that makes them way less toxic. The "Prussian blue" crayons never got banned, they just got replaced. And I'm offended that she thinks us black people would be offended by a crayon named "Flesh"; c'mon, we don't get triggered THAT easily.

Crayola must have had a lot of those "flesh" crayons in stock, because I distinctly remember it in my crayon box (outside of school, I always had the big box with the sharpener in the back)--and this would be through the rest of the 1960s (I'm old as dirt). You are right that they did decide to change this around 1961 or so, but they didn't yank it off the market and apparently boxes of crayon with "flesh" might have been in stock at various store warehouses or something.

Cadmium Red Hue does not contain Cadmium. It uses PR112 which is Naphthol Red. I can't find info on the Liquitex, but suspect they use one of the Naphthol or Pyrole Reds. Brands use the term "Hue" to indicate that they are a good color match while being free of the pigment in the name (Mummy, Viridian, Cadmium, etc.)

4:35 Come on! How hard is it to teach your kid proper use of their creative supplies. But then, I guess there are too many lax parents who don't monitor their kids or tell them NO? 😮❓p.s. Just like Emeril Lagasse used to say "pork fat rules" on his tv show in the 90s...I'd say "Crayola Rules" when it comes to kids crayon market. RoseArt was hardly a real threat for longer than a "minute." But corporates are very protective of their look, trademarks & market dominance, so I'm not surprised Crayola sued and won.

I remember the same thing. I didn't see your earlier post. but I was born in 1959 and distinctly remember Flesh still being in the crayon box. There were several colors that had traditional color names found in art like the Raw Umber or Burnt Sienna and even Lemon Yellow. Or from the color wheel like blue green or red-orange. The names of modern crayons have definitely gotten more fanciful. 😊

When Rae said the Rose Art crayons smelled like Crayola, I swear I could smell them myself 🤣 but smell is our strongest sense linked to memory. I went to primary school from 1979, and we had the huge tubs of old, battered crayons, I loved them! But we weren’t allowed to use the metallic colours or neon colours until we went up to the junior classes at age 7! 5 year old me thought this was very unfair lol, maybe that’s why I love metallic and neons today 🤣

them saying kids using spray chalk will have them end up doing the real thing is the equivalent to them saying any kid who eats the cigarette candy will become addicts. i only was addicted to the candy, not the real thing. imo, kidfitti is not as bad as them making and selling candy ciggs

Calling these banned is a bit of an overstatement. Cadmium based paints are still available even in big box art stores. You don't even need to order them online to get them. There are other pigments that aren't banned for use, but they're never carried in physical stores and you have to order them online. Some are toxic and I think others just have a cheaper alternative that is very close to them. Golden calls those ones historic but they still sell them but I've never seen them put that label on Cadmium.

I actually think that Crayola did sell Prussian Blue in Canada still within my lifetime/childhood. I’m not that old, I grew up in the early 2000’s, I might go through the big boxes of crayons that I have but I am pretty sure that the ones sold in Canada did include Prussian blue and the ones I got from the across border shopping trips my late grandma used to make said midnight blue.

That W&N Galeria cadmium red hue is not cadmium paint. It's paint formulated to look exactly like cadmium red, hence the "hue" in the name. Actual cadmium red is labeled as "cadmium red," without the "hue." Which is why it looks identical to the non-cadmium paint--they are genuinely the same thing. The the difference in terminology is an advertising gimmick to make the Liquitex paint seem safer, a technique that has quite clearly worked. Also, Prussian Blue is a standard color, pretty much every watercolor paint brand has it, as well as most colored pencils.

Amazing video!!! The cad red hue is meant to replicate the original Pigment.,but (and this is especially true in watercolors) the cad hue is made using mixture of pigments which change the properties of the paint. The hue imo is not that luminous, and can get muddy easily while mixing with different paints. Also in watercolors, cadmium paints have very very subtle granulation which is lost due to the paint being a huge. And and and. Lastly about cadmium free paints in Winsor and Newton , they hide the paint composition. That's a really shady buisness practice and keeps us in dark. (I prefer single pigment colours usually😅) Also, I am a HUGE fan of Prussian Blue watercolor. It's a BEAUTIFUL colour. The crayon looked like original Pigment (which is also figitive btw!) And the midnight blue looked like pthalo Blue with prolly black to cut the contrast. :)

I’m glad to know that all paints are cadmium free… I use a LOT of cadmium colors. Good to know I won’t be getting cancer or something 😂 Oddly enough, when I was a kid back in the 70s, I recall Crayola still having flesh as part of their crayons… Binney & Smith is actually based locally to me, so maybe that’s why? I don’t know, but we still had flesh when I was a kid. I remember because the name made me uncomfortable. But the color was amazing. It was perfect for drawing people. If you wanted to draw people off other races, they had other shades that were perfect for their skin tones anyway. White purple just got the creepy named crayon, that’s all. As for the midnight vs Prussian blue… I wonder if the Prussian blue isn’t more vibrant simply because they’re older crayons. Crayola, at some point, changed their formula from when I was a kid. I noticed it when my kids started coloring (and this was 20 years ago already). Their new formula was waxy and I made comments to my husband that they now sucked like the Rose Art crayons. So how much of the difference is in pigment and how much of it is old formula crayons vs the new crappy waxy formula crayons? 🤔

You are correct: When a paint says hue on it, then it does not contain the traditional pigment for that color but any other pigment(s) that will imitate that color.
