Sony 85mm 1.8 Fe vs Tokina 85mm ? Which one do you suggest?
@arjunsuffice2 жыл бұрын
I too bought a Samyang 85mm lens and it had issue with the eye detection. Despite the camera telling me that Eye AF was perfect, images imported to Lightroom were out of focus by a large margin. Got it replaced by the dealer and the new lens focussed fairly better. But, sometimes images turn out blurry despite the Eye AF

I purchased the Sony 85mm 1.8 FE a few years back when there weren't nearly as many options, but now after seeing your comparison the Zeiss is actually really tempting. I never found the design of the Zeiss to be that appealing, but overall quality... tough battle between that and the new sigma.

This kind of hole price and aperture range comparison are so helpful and compact! Couldn't believe your subscriber count but did my part to raise it! One question: where does your Sony FE 85/1.8 have a rubber seal at the lens mount?? All the other reviews I watched about it showed that there is no rubber sealing!? And I would love the same type of video for the nifty fiftys! All in all very good work and with this quality you'll get to 100k in no time.
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Really glad you've found it useful! It has a small seal around the metal mount (against the plastic part). 50mm's are on the to-do list - just waiting for Sigma to release their updates version (whenever that's going to happen) before I get stuck in. Thanks for the sub - really appreciate the support!

@@TomCalton Thanks for your quick reply! So you would take it out in the rain the same as the zeiss or sigma? Because non sufficient weather sealing would be a dealbreaker for me, even at the compelling price point! And does the same goes for the Sony 35/1.8?
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
Personally, I'd be scared to take any lens and camera combo out in the rain as I wouldn't want to push the limits of what they can do 😅 But, if this is a must for you, I'd always recommend checking on the manufacturers website to see what they suggest what it can safely handle. I've never personally tested how weather resistant lenses actually are so I'm not qualified to tell you what they can or cannot withstand. 😊

Hi, I’ve bought the Tokina and the Viltrox to compare them in photos and videos. In the end I found very little difference if any between the 2 (maybe at 1.8) . The Viltrox being lighter and cheaper is a great advantage. I think they are based upon the same base in the same factory.
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
Supposedly, Tokina licensed the design from Viltrox and then tweaked it. If you look at photos of them side by side, it's really obvious. However, the Tokina version is MUCH sharper than the Viltrox (don't take my word for it, download my lens charts using the link in the description and compare for yourself!).
@rectape3 жыл бұрын
@@TomCalton well it is probably due to sample variation from copy to copy. Mines are identical except at 1.8 where the Viltrox seems brighter and the Tokina sharper as if one is more like f1.8 and the other f2. If Tokina were that better I’d kept it but I don’t find it.
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
Did you do a lens chart test or just test them in the real world? In the real world, it's very difficult to pick most lenses apart unless you really pixel peep. For me, testing the lens at its maximum aperture is the key. Every lens gets sharper as you close it down - it's a given. But if the lens is pin sharp wide open then that's the mark of a good lens. Why own a fast prime if you can't shoot wide open without the results looking soft? Know what I mean?
@rectape3 жыл бұрын
@@TomCalton yes I understand and it is where chart test doesn't mean everything to me. Real life application and I'm not filming or taking pics wide open every time. 1.8 on a 85 mm is already plenty I don't understand the need of a 1.4 on this focal lenght. To each his own
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
A lens chart is a controlled test that allows you to more decisively compare the sharpness (amid other qualities) of a lens. Your original statement was that you saw no difference between the two lenses, suggesting that my conclusion was either flawed or incorrect. Though, you then admit that you didn't test your lenses in a controlled environment, so your comparison doesn't seem entirely fair. I agree with you (and I even state in the video) in real life, minor differences are much harder to spot, which is why lens tests are important to those who care about getting the "best" lens possible, as it's a more accurate test with far less variables that could influence the sharpness, contrast, colours, etc etc. I'm merely here to provide evidence and my own, unbiased opinion based off my experience handling the lenses I test, which will hopefully be useful in aiding others to come to their own conclusion. But for you to suggest that two lenses are 'identical' without conducting a proper, fair test yourself, despite seeing my evidence that WAS conducted in a controlled manner that clearly shows the opposite to what you claim maybe somewhat unhelpful to those reading these comments and trying to come to a decision. I hope you don't find offence to this and I'm sure it wasn't you intention to mislead anyone. Just thought I needed to clarify my position.

Inspired by this excellent comparison video, I rented the Batis for 3 wedding video shoots last week, paired with my SONY FS5. Here is my 2 cents. 1. Optics: I have no complaint at all. 2. Handling: this is where this lens threw me off. The focus throw is REALLY long, and because the ring is not textured but smooth, it was very difficult to hold onto it and nail focus in time, especially when aperture is wide open. After all, this is a photography lens first. 3. Lack of AF/MF switch: FS5 has its own toggle switch so it was not an issue for me, although I don't know who relies on FS5's autofocus 😂 4. Focal length: pairing the lens with a super35 sensor means you get a full-frame equivalent of about 127mm and that is long. Certainly not as versatile as, say, 24-70mm but when you need that extra reach, it's there. 5. OIS: FS5 (which lacks IBIS) was always on a monopod, but I did see how the lens' OIS giving extra stability. I didn't notice any weird stutter, either. I might try renting the Tokina for this weekend and if I do, I will report back. Thanks Tom for such a comprehensive review!

Hey Felix. It wasn't included as it's a MF lens only. As the title of the video suggests, this test was looking at all of the AF lenses available for Sony E-Mount. If I included all of the MF lenses too it would have been too much. Maybe one for another video though?

@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
To get a super thick blur on a full length portrait you'll need a long lens - something like a 135mm f/1.8 would do it. Though, because it's a long lens you'll need to be quite a way away from them when you shoot, which can be tricky. If that sounds like too much hassle then an 85mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 would do a good enough job and would mean you wouldn't need to stand quite as far away. I hope this helps!

As much as I love comparison videos it do bother me very few overall creators of these videos take into consideration the cost Vs. Bang for buck factor... If a 2000$ lens our perform a 700$ lens... That's fine but if it's out perform the 700$ lens with very very little... Is the price difference justified when taking performance into consideration? Or would the 700$ lens be better because of its much lower price?
@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
I think that's for the individual to decide. In these tests I can only score based off evidence. But when it comes to deciding whether something is worth the pricetag or not, that is entirely down to the individual as there are waaaaay too many variables to consider. What's the persons budget like? Are they a pro or a hobbiest? Which characteristics of a lens do they consider to be the most important? Etc etc. And because of this, there isn't always a single answer that will be correct for absolutely everyone.

Hi!! This video is just what I was looking for! Thank you for such great comparison :) I have just one question... I have noticed that some of the lenses are FE mount, my camera is E mount. This would mean that instead of having an 85 mm I would be getting the result of a 125 mm, right? (Meaning my background would be closer?)

If I’m not watching this review, I almost take Samyang. That seems Tokina will be in my check out soon for best budget and value. Terima kasih for your effort! Greetings from 🇮🇩 Indonesian subscriber.

Tokina seems to be the best value for the money. Well balanced in most aspects. No major issues like the Samyang. 2nd sharpest of the bunch, autofocus is on par with the bast. A little heavier than the Sony by 200 grams, but the used Sony, Viltrox and Tokina are all similar in price.

I'll disagree at the point made at 8:45 in. I do not see the blue fringing problem on the Sony but the white seems to have a slight tint to it. The fringing that you see on these examples is clearly seen on the Viltrox and Tokina in the form of Purple Fringing. The Zeiss is obviously the nicest lens out of the choices out of these 5.

Samyang owner here - had the exact same issue when taking some portrait shots of myself and girlfriend. Seems connected to the eye and or face AF only because when I shoot objects the lens is banging. I don't do many portraits so it's fine by me but yes, something to be aware of. One day I'll have the docking station and I'll upgrade the firmware, maybe that'll fix it? But not great out of the box.

Thanks for sharing! Interesting that you think it might be linked to Eye AF. Hopefully the firmware update sorts it out 👍

My firend told me that Tokina and Viltrox are the same lenses. How can that be true?
@TomCalton2 жыл бұрын
They're not the same exactly, but based on the same blueprint. This video explains more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iH-VY42OnMennMU

@@TomCalton Thank you for a quick replay. I am in a search for 85 mm lens and Tokina seems like a good budget start option.

It's okay, I know for sure the Zeiss was close to 3rd place and that makes me happy 😁 great video Tom!

Thanks for watching! In terms of image quality and performance, the Zeiss is fantastic! It's just very expensive for an f/1.8 lens. If you can get a decent second hand copy of it though...

@@TomCalton hahaha you have a point there! I was considering the Yongnuo but with the auto focus issue it’s a big pass on me.

Tom, what background do you use for your videos? Is it wallpaper?

No, it's actually chipboard painted blue 🙂

For those who have a Sony Camera without IBIS, the Zeiss Batis are the best option (maybe the best option anyway !!!) !
@TomCalton2 жыл бұрын
Good point - the image stabilisation would definitely help in that case, espechially for video work, or if you shoot hand held in low light a lot.

@@TomCalton 😇 I am only still photographer, so I never use video (I hate video). IF I was going to get a 85mm Lens, I think the best one will be the Zeiss Batis for me, but I have several short tele Lenses, fx the Excellent Voigtländer 65mm Macro APO Lanthar with outstanding image quality and the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM.
