I saw your experiment last year and did the same in my garden. It turned out very well. So I did it again 🙂 Thanks, helped me a lot.

I wonder if the off centered spaced bulbs were bigger because of their direct exposure to the sun? Just from an eyeball guesstimate, it looks like they were planted on the south side of the raised bed, while the wider spaced cloves were on the north. Early on, the garlic on the south side could get better photosynthesis and a jump on the growing season, since the sun is still relatively low in the sky, while the northern side gets a little shaded out. 🤷‍♂️

Awesome! ☺️ I love your garden science experiments. I think the 7” off center garlic spacing just might be the way to go. 🧄🧄🧄 I’ll be planting my garlic here shortly & I think I’m going to try this out. Thank you for the diligent work you put in to help out all of us fellow gardeners 💚🌞🌱

I remember commenting about an experiment similar to this, I've been subscribed since then, and the pay-off of seeing the result is huge

Great experiment! Thanks for sharing with us! I grow garlic in Alaska and will be planting mine 7” offset this year.

In general, it is always better to offset vs block spacing. You get more. Even if you have smaller sizes you still get more harvest and that is fine. But when you offset like you did you increase the area around each a bit more so your end product is larger than with tighter block spacing. We used to have fields of Alfalfa and the farmers planted garlic around all the fields. The areas around the fields were at least 5ft wide if not wider and just used big machines to plant and they all came out huge. We as children would go pull some every year for a tasty snack.

I thoroughly enjoy your garlic experimentation 👍 I would be interested in an experiment where you compare garlic planted in fall versus sprouted garlic planted in spring 🤔 I wonder if there would be any difference!

Excellent DIY study methodology. Oddly, most people can't manage this.

When I watched your 6” experiment, I wondered what the effect would be for 7” And then .. what do I find?? This! Fascinating

Love it! Planted out roughly 235 cloves, 5 varieties. I live in wheat country so mine get buried under 6" of straw. Trying out a variety this year called Inchelium Red. Discovered on one of the reservations near me

🎉🎉🎉love the math and experimentation. What types of garlic are good for cold snowy weather please? I love Spanish but we are in Ontario. Shall we go ahead and try Ontario garlic?

Talk about ment to be. I just received my garlic bulbs about an hour ago. Never planted garlic before and your video popped up. Thank you so much !! I'm going to be planting them in grow bags ( any advice would be great). Oh I'm in zone 6 Ohio.

I followed your videos last fall and planted garlic for the first time.Since I live on the coast, I mulched the patch with seaweed. It did really well! Question, garlic lovers: How should I store all these garlic heads?? I dried them in a closet because I live in an apartment and really had no other options. They are still just hanging out in there, and we grab one when we need it. Can I cut off all the stalks and put them in a basket? How long will they last? This is a hard stalk variety from Italy. Thanks!

If your closet is a cool temperature, they will keep for 7 months or so. If it's room temp, they won't keep as long.(there's a lot of variation. Hard neck doesn't store as long as soft neck.). The most reliable way of preserving I've found is freezing. I mince the garlic in my food processor, mix it with olive oil, and freeze it in ice cube trays. When the cubes are solid, I move them to bags or jars. If you're going to store some fresh in a basket, chop off the stem as he does in the video. Keep it somewhere cool and dark (not the fridge).

Interesting to see the variance from year to year with your 6” spacing. Any idea on why? Weather changes, different size seed garlic, different variety?

I plant with alternative spacing although not as accurate as yours. Hardneck. Similar nutrient base but a native soil/compost mix with whatever vermiculite has accumulated from transplanting. 72 bulbs in a 52" x 22" double cement block solid bottom (I thought) raised bed. Even though the fir roots ran rampant through the bed (thus the solid bottom) I still had 30 heads that filled the palm of my not-so-small hand. Highly recommend alternative spacing to maximize yields from small spacing! I do, however, have a question. Since that was my final attempt at a bed and I have turned to containers for nearly all sun lovers, I 'm wondering what you, or your learned viewers, would suggest for spacing for garlic in containers?

So which gives you a bigger total, the 6" off center from the other video, or the 7" off center from this one? I tried just comparing the total weights between the videos but the numbers don't seem quite comparable...

Flaw in your experiment...unless all your galic bulbs were the same size, the experiment wouldn't work. The bigger the bulb put in the garden, the bigger the head will be. At least that is what I have discovered in my 5a garden.
