Great video Justin! For anyone wondering about the line lock clip that broke, the only clip-style line locks included with the tent come attached the cords that are included to make the tent fully free-standing when the doors are open. Those cords can be used as quick attach and tension-able guy lines since the hooks clip nicely to the rings, but for strong winds knots are the better option as the clip-style line locks are not nearly as strong as the standard ones.

Regarding the neo loft, I think this new fabric will be a game changer for air pads. The stretchiness makes it far quieter and less bouncy and thus more comfortable than any current fabric being used on an air only pad. Once they start designing lighter pads for backpacking with this fabric, it's going to change the whole game.

Seems like plastic loops + lineloks on the arcdome could easily be done away with and just replaced with a bowline + adjustable hitch to eliminate that particular failure mode.
@tarptent

The line lock hooks clip nicely to the rings but for extreme conditions, we would recommend knots as the clip version of the line lock is not as strong as the typical webbing version. The rings are mainly there for ease of tying and untying lines especially with gloves on.

I own 2 Tarptents, dynemma, and have used both in winter. Both are great even though they are not stated 4 season. Although I haven't tried them in high winds on a saddle, kinda asking for it. But they do hold snow and are the best for weight and strength. You can't go wrong with Tarptent, and their customer service is great! I know! After sending one back after a few whiskeys and a stove to close to the side. Yep, dynemma burns. But thank goodness for plenty of snow to put out the small burn. :o)

I live in Iceland, and i am very curious to hear your oppinion on if you think that the ArcDome is better than the Scarp 1 Ultra in dealing with wind. If answering puts you in a strange position with Tarptent then i totally understand. Just thought you might have some insights. Still leaning more towards the Scarp as it is smaller lower wind volume to deal with. A 1p arcdome would totally mess me up 😮

I like the shape of the arc dome and it definitely handled the wind which we get a lot of here in the uk.the pole sleeves are a concern for me the entry looks way too narrow and the cross over is another there's no need for the gap and if anything it could causing rubbing of the poles.all the guy out points are great I'd attache the guy permanently as I'm not a fan of those hook type of guys.

So it seems like the comparison against the Durston gear X-dome for solo hikers isn't very good. The advantage seems to be that it is available with a solid inner, while the X-dome isn't (yet). The X-dome seems to have the advantage with vertical walls (due to crosspole), roomier inside with 1 side extended into the vestibule area, optional trekking pole reinforcement, and tons of little things like magnetic fly clips. On a brighter note though, I totally jumped at buying that thermarest neoloft pad after seeing that in this video. That looks worth the weight for sure
@dcaudwell

Apples to Oranges. The Arc Dome is a sturdier, 2 person tent built for gnarlier conditions - the limits will extend further into true 4 season reliability. The X-Dome is 1+, lighter weight, and the limits (of the CF poles) will be reached sooner in true 4 season conditions. Maybe Dan will release some DAC poles for deep 4 season use?

It's called the arcdome because Dan Durston was going to come out with the X-Dome. As for the inreach products, mobile/cellular phones are gaining sat comms capabilities so Garmin's offerings will soon be expensive bricks because people will spend heaps less on dedicated actual PLBs and combine that with their mobile/cellular phones for messaging purposes, and not bother with costly subscription fees from Garmin

On the prototype versions of the tent I noticed the inside zipper was very low compared to the apex. It looked like you couldn’t sit half in and out of the tent and do things like cook. Henry said it would be addressed, were you able to sit upright in the tent with the doors open with your feet outside to cook, change shoes etc? How tall are you? Very important to me on snow. Especially when the vestibule can be dug out and there’s no risk of bugs entering. Thanks. 😊

The line lock that broke was never really intended to be used like that. The only clip-style line locks that come with the tent are the two attached to the two cords that are included so that the tent can be fully freestanding when the doors are open. Those cords and the clip-style line locks attached to them can be used as guy-lines, but for strong winds tying the cord directly into the ring is the better option, and is what we did in testing. The clip-stye line locks are not nearly as strong as standard line locks and are only really there to give the freestanding set-up adjustably. While they can clip to the rings that is not really the intended use.

I don’t think thermarest needs to make a premium version of the boost 650. I saw it in person at ISPO show and talked to the salesperson and the reason this exists is that it’s meant for people seeking pure comfort and not something like high-performance bag. It’s meant to be somewhat more affordable, more universal and invite more people to try camping without sacrificing comfort. It has its place, let it be, but time will tell how it will be acceptable by wider audiences.

TBH I don’t love how this tent blatantly appears to have ripped off Durston Gear’s floor plan which they have built so much of their brand and ethos on. I totally get that there is plenty of copying that goes on but it just feels a little crummy - not something I would like to support myself. Especially with how close the naming is to the X-Dome. I remember reading the placeholder on the first in website warning about this and wondering who was trying to copy their designs - I guess now I know. I would have loved to see this acknowledged in the video and was a little disappointed that it was left out. Hopefully you can mention it in the X-Dome video in Oct/November when you get your hands on the sample.

Companies build off of other designs. The X-Mid was likely inspired by the Sierra Designs High Route and the Tarptent Stratospire but no one gets upset when those two tents aren't referenced. The ArcDome was also likely inspired by several tents with offset floorplans and 4-season dome-style capabilities. I think it's great to recognize that tent manufacturers are constantly iterating and improving on each others designs, but for the sake of a KZbin video, I don't think I can commit to going through the genealogy of a product every time I mention it.

I think Tarptent published way earlier the arc dome on their instagram. There was at this time no X Dome online. Durston copies with the x dome inner parts of the copper spur and Msr Hubba Hubba. The outer design is inspired by the 3ufl gear Taiji. They featured also the extra supportive trekking pole solution in their 1 person version. Slingfin Portal was probably one of Durstons inspirations too.

Seeing some comments, I'd say there is no point in trying to compare this to the new Durston tent. These are not competing products. TT ArcDome is 2p, 2 vestibules, specifically aimed at 4 season use. Durston X-Dome is 1p, 1 vestibule, specifically aimed at ultra-light 3 season use (with the claim that you could push it to 4 seasons, but it simply does not have the features to be a true 4-season tent). Even the structure is different, with the TT ArcDome being an actual 'dome' so 2 arch poles, and the Durston X-Dome pole structure being more like a hubba hubba. The names are confusing, but if anything the TT is more of a proper dome than the Durston. Nonetheless, it's great to see that tent innovation is not dead, both companies are to be appreciated for that :-)
