I am 70, and still venture into the hills wild camping, I have been doing it since I was 23, so have a good fitness level, and the required skills. Age is no barrier If you have the experience, if not, just try say a 2 hour easy walk and a camp site to get started. I do this quite a lot, making sure there is a nice pub nearby ;) Swaledale is my favourite area for this- Grinton, Reeth, Muker. Go for it!

I have to say the performance of the tent with regards to being waterproof is absolutely shocking for the price point! Fair play to you for being so laid back about it 😁,it would be interesting to see what Nortent have to say.Great video as always!
@GoingSoloOutdoorsАй бұрын
I agree about the price point. You want a tent at this price to be completely waterproof out of the box 👍. I wasn’t happy to see that it leaked however in some regards I was happy it was localized only to those patches and the leak was nowhere near the inner tent. Luckily I should be able to add a bit of seam sealant and fix it myself 👍. Really appreciate you watching!

I fell coming down in exactly the same place. It's proper slippy in the wet. Like the tent design although it does seem quite huge for a 1 man. I own the 2024 nortent vern 1, and despite some people's opinions I absolutely love it. Think nortent are a great company that listen, so wouldn't be surprised if they sort those patches out. I used to own the Unna and i had a similar experience with that, the rain direction changed and i had rain coming in under the storm flap. Cracking vid, atb paul
@GoingSoloOutdoors5 күн бұрын
Thanks! I really like this tent design a lot. It is very spacious for a one man tent and almost feels like a two man tent which is nice. The inner is definitely only big enough for one person but it has tons of headroom and it remains very taught and the fabric doesn’t blow around all that much in strong winds. I really like that Nortent is creating some interesting designs, however I sometimes get the impression that the consumer is the beta tester as each year there are updates made to many of their existing products. Don’t get me wrong, I think that’s a good thing but I sometimes get the impression the tent designs were not tested for a long enough period of time before being brought to market. For instance these vents 😅. It takes 10 minutes in the wind to realize there really needs to be a toggle to hold it from flapping like crazy. Also with no mesh you are going to get tons of spin drift in snowy conditions unless you completely zip the vent closed but then you completely cut your ventilation. The leaks were also not ideal but a few camps in the rain would have indicated that was an issue. The rest of the tent was seam sealed by the company but these areas were left untouched which I don’t understand. I dunno. Like I said, I really like the tent but in this configuration, at $700 I expect to see little things like this taken care of in the testing phase before the tents are sold to the consumer. I have the Vern 1 PC and I also really like the design of that tent, but I hate the poles that came with it. This year they’ve updated that tent and it comes with much better poles (they look like the ones that came with this tent which are nice), more pole attachment points, and more guy out points. I messaged the company to see if they would have these poles available for people with the first generation of the Vern 1 PC to purchase but they never responded. I’m just left feeling like a beta tester with terrible poles. I suppose these are growing pains but it just doesn’t sit right with me. Sorry my response was so long. It just got me thinking out loud and venting a little 🤣😅. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
@thatunfitbloke5 күн бұрын
@GoingSoloOutdoors haha, no problem with the long reply. Yeah I get your point about the consumer being the beta testers. I'd definitely try getting back in touch though and send them ur vid. Well, first of all we noticed you are sporting a mustache! Nice! Love the tent, we particularly like the yellow fabric inside, which brightens it up a lot. Black interiors are so dark. As for the leaking, your attitude is amazing! Looked at it, figured out what the problem was and have a fix already in mind. No temper tantrum, no exclamations about how bad it is, nope, just figuring out what to do! Patience in the midst of possible troubles, moving what was important to places where leaking was not evident, then back to sleep. Bravo young man, bravo! Thank you for another amazing video…we so look forward to them-and the recipes! I do not like fish at all, but my hubby does. Maybe he can convince me to try that dish, or maybe I could convince him to exchange the shrimp for chicken and a different sauce!😁 Oh, and the camping knife worked well, another example of making do and moving forward! I bought a Wild Country Hoolie 2 tunnel tent about 12 years ago, and it's still going strong with never so much as a single drop of water ever getting through, and it's been out in some torrential rain storms. My only gripe is that it's a long footprint, but all in all, it's a great tent.
@GoingSoloOutdoors27 күн бұрын
Nice 👍. The hexagonal footprint of this tent was one of the reasons I wanted to give this new tent a try. A bit different not having that long narrow footprint like I have with my other tunnel tents. Despite the wider tunnel it actually handled the wind better than I expect. The leaks however were definitely not ideal. Hopefully it will be an easy fix. Another awesome video. Your videography and delivery is great. You need a wild camping tv show ! Interesting tent but for me too heavy. I have a Jannu with 10.25mm poles which comes in less heavy than this. My nallo 2 is over 1kg lighter and is expedition proven in terms of storm worthiness. Plus both are of course 2 person. Great to see innovative new designs to so I applaud nortent for that 👏
@GoingSoloOutdoors29 күн бұрын
Thanks! The weight does make it a hard sell unless you don’t bring the footprint and use lighter pegs. You can get it down to 2.8kg. It feels very roomy inside and was comfortable to camp in but I agree there are many very strong two man tents at the 3.47kg which was the weight as I brought it on this trip. The design is very unique though and I do respect that they are trying new things. It performed well on the wind as well, although the leaking I experienced definitely was not ideal. I wouldn’t have been very happy if my camera equipment got wet. Hopefully it will be an easy fix. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend.

Cool tent review, the weather was very appropriate. Not sure about this tent though. Quite a haul at 3,5 kg but for specific use like winter camping perhaps interesting when you bring (much) more gear. To be honest, I'd appreciate the 'living space' inside the Unna more than having 2 big vestibules and a relatively smaller inner tent space. The leaking on the windward side was not so surprising, with wind actually driving water through. Didn't expect seeing it on both sides but nothing a small tube of sealant can't solve. Dinner was mouth watering, as always. Compliments to the chef.
@GoingSoloOutdoorsАй бұрын
I wouldn’t necessarily call this a review because I have no idea yet how this tent will handle snow or multiple trips in this kind of weather, but it definitely gave me an idea of how it can handle the wind and rain. I was impressed with how it held up to the wind and I actually really enjoyed the space inside. However the leaks definitely need to be addressed and I wouldn’t expect it to a tent at this price point. Hopefully it should be an easy fix. The Unna is still hands-down, my favorite tent 👍⛺️. Absolutely LOVE my Unna!!

I was really craving for this tent until the big disappointment of its performance under heavy rain and wind 😢 . I know it can be seam sealed and it is now done directly from Nortent for the new buyers but I would have expect a better quality control at the source . They probably found out afterward's if they are now selling it sealed. I will wait after you test it again to see if this was a simple issue easily fixed. One thing I wasnt disappointed is the quality of your video , I alway's find them relaxing , enjoyable and educative at the same time ( we learn about gear and how to cook 😉 ) . Thanks for sharing ( hope my english is understandable 😊 )

I would have expect better quality control as well. It makes me question if the tents are even being properly tested before being brought to market. The tent I received does have seam sealant on the seams around the inner tent but not on the vestibule. So I’m not sure if they are going to be seam sealing those portions of the tent or not. I’d be curious to see the vestibule of someone who’s getting the tent after this option was made available on the website. Overall I was happy with the space inside the tent and how it performed in the wind, but the leaking was a big disappointment. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB

You are an impressive man Mr. Solo, hiking so far to test out a brand new tent in such foul conditions. Most people interested in testing their tents in crappy weather would probably just pitch it in their back garden or a site closer to the car. So kudos to you, and thank you very much for bringing us along. I have been waiting for this video since I saw your instagram post last week. And it did not disappoint, but then again, you never do. And as a bit of a Nortent fanboy, this video was very interesting. Fortunately for me and my wallet, I may be too tall for it. But I have to admit that watching this video did nothing to alleviate my n+1 syndrome Looking forward to the next one, both with or without the Ly 1 (btw you pronounce the name wrong 😉) and I wish you and yours a great weekend. 👍

I just try to use new tents as I would use any of my others. Best way to find out what it can do👍. The hike to this spot definitely wasn’t as far as many of my other camps but as the days are getting shorter there is less time to hike once I arrive at my destination. Either way it was nice to get out and test this tent. I like the design much more than I originally anticipated, although there are definitely a few things that need to be addressed. I really enjoyed using the tent though. really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Can’t wait to get back out for another camp. Hope you have a nice weekend!

Thanks! I have six Hilleberg tents now 👍. They are definitely the best tents I’ve ever used and they are the tents I use most often, but I still absolutely love trying new tents 😅. Especially when I see a design, that’s a bit unique. Because I often get people asking questions about tents and recommendations, it’s nice to have an idea of what the other manufacturers are offering because let’s be honest, it’s hard to recommend someone spend Hilleberg money if they are not camping as often as I do. The leaks were very unfortunate but once’s fixed I actually look forward to using this tent again. It definitely has a couple things that can use some work (like the vents) but overall I think it has a lot going for it. I was impressed with how well it handled the wind and how spacious it is. Good vid. Great camp due to the weather severity. Nice meal with a hidden knife. But you had it. Thai is good stuff, hot generally. New tent. It takes time. In my earl days and for several more you had to seam seal all the stiches, tie outs doors etc. You got a bottle of sealant and a syringe with the tent. Generally the seams were taped but not always. And that was top of the line expensive tents in the 70's and 80's. In the late 80's they started coming taped and seam sealed. Several hundred dollar tents then. Equivalent to a Hilleberg price now. So that should be an easy fix. Like your comment the material may not be properly attached by method. The frying pan, ceramic? Brand? Good vid. All good from east Kentucky USA. Land of all the fall colors right now. Next time.
@GoingSoloOutdoorsАй бұрын
The fry pan I am using is the jetboil summit skillet. It has one of the best nonstick ceramic coatings I’ve used. It’s one of my favorites 👍. With these silnylon fabrics the seams can’t actually be taped but the stitching methods and threads can make it not necessary. This company is supposedly using a stitching method similar to Hilleberg which should mean you don’t need to seal the seams. I have never had to with my Hillebergs. I really enjoyed the space inside this tent and was impressed with how it handled the wind but the leaks were a bit disappointing. It should be an easy fix but at this price point you wouldn’t expect it to leak this much. I bet the Autumn colors look fantastic in Kentucky 😀🍂🍁. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend.

Thanks. This fry pan is definitely one of my favorites to cook with. Nothing sticks to it and it cooks pretty evenly. At some point I will be pitching the tent in my back garden and pouring water over this area to try to simulate what happened on this camp. As I was drying the tent at home, I noticed that water seems like it got trapped between the inner Dyneema patches and the outer tent fly so I want to experiment with it a bit more before a seam seal it. I recently bought a Hillerberg Savio 3 person 4 season tent and after now been in 2 storms I also have had the problem of rain entering my tent.. But unlike your tent in my tent the rain seems to enter through the top vent cover...Still trying to work the problem..... but enough about my problem..... I honestly enjoy all your videos...
@GoingSoloOutdoorsАй бұрын
Really happy you’re enjoying the videos. I have the same issue in my Nammatj 2. The large vents are fantastic but in wind driven rain that black breathable fabric can get saturated and eventually the water will begin shaking off into the vestibule. It’s a catch 22 because that fabric is fantastic for breathability and keeping out snow drift however in windy, rainy conditions it can get your vestibule wet. But as a solo camper, if I’m sleeping in a two man tent, I can just keep my pack inside the tent with me and it’s not really an issue. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend.
@seamusdelaney9133Ай бұрын
Sorry to hear you have had a similar problem with your nammatj 2.. I will freely admit after spending a small fortune on my Hilleberg Savio tent my dissapointment and confidence in Hilleberg being Bomb Proof is no more in the rain.. If it was just a leak then I perhaps could seal it but not sure how to control the wind blowing rain under the top vent ventilation cover....Sorry for venting to you but perhaps others on your site may be prevented spending their hard earned money on what is supposed to a bomb proof tent..And yet as strange as it sounds I do like the tent apart from getting wet . Something else I like is the honesty of your videos . Unlike many out there who claim to risk life and limb in a slight breeze your videos have a way of sharing your experience in a way that is real at least that is how I see it... Thank you.

What an absolute shame the tent failed , and I had my heart set on the Ly1 for me and my dog😢.. I won’t be camping in heavy forecast rain, so it probably would suffice. My other choice is the Unna and I do prefer a 1 step pitch with a ground sheet with Hilleberg, but it’s a bit small for 1 man and his medium size dog, but he’s happy enough in my Annaris so I may go hilleberg. Such a shame with all that room available in the Ly1 PS at least I picked up the stone on the tent peg technique and I loved those compressed dehydrated wet wipes!!😅
@GoingSoloOutdoors20 күн бұрын
I still think this would be a fantastic tent for camping with a dog because of the two vestibules and multiple doors. It did fantastic in the wind so it’s a shame it leaked but that was an extreme rain test for sure. They are also now offering seam sealing for free on their site. Not sure if it’s because of this issue but it’s nice they are offering it. I haven’t fixed mine yet, but it should be an easy fix. I really like the space and the head height in this tent so I’d love to use it again. Hillebergs are definitely a bit more expensive but the quality it great. But like I said, I still think this is a really great tent but at this weight, you can get a Hilleberg Nammatj which is a two man tent and you’d have plenty of room for a dog as well. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment.

I was really happy with the space inside the tent and how the tent was able to handle the wind but at this price point I wouldn’t expect it to leak in four places like it did. At least the inner tent remained completely dry. I still really like the tent, so hopefully I’ll be able to fix those spots on my own with some seam sealant. But you’re right, I have never had these issues with my Hillberg’s. In heavy wind driven rain, the black breathable fabric on my Nammatj vents can become saturated and will sometimes spray water into the vestibule but only when the winds are really bad but the seams do not leak. I still think the design is very unique and I do like it so hopefully the company can iron out some of these issues. Only time will tell. Finally watched as I have to pause yesterday, everything fine except the tent leaks, though it’s under test but not expected to leak also I did not like 3 parts for one person tent, I think better ones you have , also weight matters as every gram count and everything matters since the tent should protect everything inside including person and costly equipments like camera gear. Better to return or avoid next winter coming and because of wind the leaking area may tear off at some point. Best option is rerun or replace with different. But any way I liked the whole thing as usual. I think the company should watch this video, you should tag them, Thank you - Rams, BHX

Nice one. That paad thai was fab! I believe that Nortent are sending all of their future Ly 1's out factory seam sealed. But in the meantime, I am going to do my dyneema edges. I am the same as you my friend, the tent is growing on me. Plus, I was really impressed with the wind performance too. I have suggested they do a larger inner, though, that sacrifices some vestibule space on one side. Well done on another excellent video.
@GoingSoloOutdoorsАй бұрын
Thanks man! Always nice to eat well in a beautiful place. Loved the amount of space I had for cooking in the vestibule as well. I noticed the website now says the tent will be seam sealed which I think is fantastic. My seams around the inner tent were actually already seam sealed however none of the vestibule seams were. Those seems did remain dry though throughout the entire night. I only had the issue around the Dyneema patches. Oddly enough, the actual stitching remained dry on the patches but water seems to squeeze underneath the patches. When I got home to dry out the tent, I also noticed that it looks like water had collected between the Dyneema patches and the outer tent fabric. Honestly, if the tent fabric is as strong as they claim, I don’t even see the need for Dyneema patches. All it seems to do is introduce more points for water to actually get inside, especially when the stitching is being placed under stress because they are guy out points. If I was designing the tent, I would personally move this guy out points to the vent hood like Hilleberg does and ditch the Dyneema patches. I was definitely a bit, disappointed with the leaks but overall, I was very pleased with how it performed in the wind and how spacious the inner tent felt. It was a very comfortable place to spend the night. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend.
