Choosing the best CPU cooler for ITX PC's usually boils down to a question of air cooling vs water cooling. But in this video I wanted to find out how the best ULTRA low profile CPU coolers under 47mm end up performing at 65W and 95W. Are these really worth buying for an air cooled ITX PC or do you need to search for something bigger?

I guess they figured most people would head to AIOs for low profile cooling performance and all these KZbinrs aren't helping matters. Luckily we have companies like Noctua focused all around. I'm happy with the NH-L9a in Chromax for this low profile build I made on a 5700G in a Silverstone case.

Love the SFF focus. Would really like to see LGA1700 / 12th gen on low profile coolers (sub 50mm). Using any technique possible to make it run, be that PL2 limits, undervolting, duct-ing, using 25mm fan on L9i, etc. Just want to see which coolers are able to handle 12600k / 12700k the best and at what power draw.. I have a Dr. Zaber Sentry 2.0 with a 12600K. Currently using an NH-L9i 1700 for a cooler with the Noctua duct kit. It just BARELY keeps up under full synthetic load with stock settings. Low to mid 90s for temps, BUT it is stable there without climbing any higher. Gonna try some undervolting and see what that does. Also have a few more coolers on the way to try. Biggest headache with LGA1700 is getting a cooler that fits these motherboard options.

I was pretty set to try to get my 12700k sffpc build aircooled but honestly nothing that's out there can handle it at it's max 190W TDP under 60mm. Even if you undervolt and limit it to 150W max power draw it's still not adequate. I ended up going with an AIO and I'm much happier with the temps.

Honestly, I've spent a lot of time trying to optimise things and the only real thing that had an appreciable affect was changing my Big Shuriken 3's fan to a full size NF-P12 fan. At this stage I already had all of my other fan slots filled on my NR200 (NF-A12s on the bottom, A12x25s on top as exhaust). I found that even stuff like fan profiles didn't lead any appreciable improvement, but having stronger fans on top as exhaust helps GPU temps significantly (intake not so much).

I had the AXP90cu in a Velka 7. It won't throttle a 5800x. It does get into the mid 80s. I did not use the 65w mode and had overclocked ram+IF. I've moved on to watercooling in an Alta G1M. You can fit 900mm of rads in that thing. If you do your research you will find others also conclude the AXP90cu is the top of this roost. No point in getting something else under 47mm.

Those low profile coolers benefits the best in sandwich layouts cases like the DAN A4 or the Louqe ghost S1. Also, Noctua makes some a foam gaskets for the NH-L9a which concentrates the direction of airflow better into heat sink better. I've saw a drop in about 7C when using this in My DAN A4 with a 3600x cpu. This also allows me to run that fan a little slower to reduce acoustics. I highly recommend using those gaskets where the NH-L9a is closer to the side panels of the case.

I'm so glad you made this video. I needed a good list of small coolers for my laptop. My OMEN 15's 80w 10750h and 100w 3070, overload the small cooler. The cover on the bottom has grating along the bottom above the heat pipes. So I am cutting a square out, so I can use some thermal pads to put a cooler on them. Even a little bit of help will go a long way. I have a laptop stand that will already work perfect for this. And I don't move my laptop much from my living room. It's connected to the TV. So I figure the rare occurrence of me wanting to move the laptop around or out of the house, wont be much of an issue. The laptop will literally just be sitting on top of the cooler, so just a simple tilt and lift should get it up without ruining the thermal pad I'll be using. Again, thank you guys for doing this video. Saved me some hunting. I'm going with the IS-47k, since the fan is between the cold plate and heat sink. As long as I can get around the same temps I get now, with less noise than the fans in the laptop. I think setting the fan speed of the laptop's fans to decent sound level, along with the IS-47k at a similar level, will make the gaming experience on my OMEN so much better. While still making it portable enough.

One cooler you didn't add, which is ridiculously short and able to fit into 1u chassis is the CNPS2X from Zalman. They are normally very cheap, around $15. They perform pretty decent for most 65w tdp cpus or apus, but very well if you're able to install a 120mm fan just above it. I used one in a goodisory a01 case with a ryzen 5600g and i was amazed it was able to stay quiet and keep the cpu under 78°C in benchmarks that taxed both the cpu and igpu.

Revisiting this video because I'm upgrading from my 6700k and plan on reusing it in an InWin Chopin case as a media center, thanks HC for the guidance in choosing a CPU cooler...

I would've wanted you to test the Thermaltake Engine27. I know it's a rare find, but among the sub-30mm coolers, I remember its performance was appropriate provided you use 65W TDP chips.

Nice review. IMO these are fine for 65w parts. I did upgrade from my C7 that worked floorless on my Intel 4000s and 6000s series. Had to give it up when I went AMD 5000, as my first 5600x would have needed an upgrade fitting kit, and it died and I ended up with getting a 5800x instead. Won't stress out the C7 on such an OP CPU as it seems to overheat some tower coolers. But anything under that and I have no regrets on the C7.

I hope you can include the Thermalright AXP120-X67 and the new revision Scythe Big Shuriken 3 Rev. B for the low profile cooler roundup. They're both 67mm tall and will match up against low profile mode on NH-L12S. It would be also interesting to test both with Nidec Gentle Typhoon or NF-A12x25's. Both coolers should be able to fit the Meshlicious with standard thickness fans whereas NH-L12S is only good for low profile mode with stock 15mm thickness fan.

Still wondering if the L9i can cool a 11900K @120w.

Looking forward to the next video. To be honest, nothing new here, C7 and L9A/I have always been the best in this size class. Hope you can include the older BIg shuriken rev 2 because it's a decent amount smaller - which can be the difference between fitting and not fitting in some cases.

Its amazing that the L9 Noctua still keeps on chugging. Every time I look at different low profile coolers its always back to the L9.

Unfortunate you were not able to get your hands on an Alpenfohn Blackridge (built in partnership with DAN for the Dancase A4). It has a subpar backplate-less mounting system (users get around this with their own backplates), but even in stock form it would have been a pretty competitive option in this roundup.

My first thought as well. I have a Blackridge with a Noctua A9x14 Chromax underneath and a A12x25 on top. In a Sliger Conswole, I've yet to discover a better combo. It's a fantastic so far and dead silent.

@@HardwareCanucks I had the Blackridge and one thing you find out the hard way is that its so long that it can block the video card slot unless you are using a case with a sandwich layout. Something you might want to check out in the review.

@@HardwareCanucks I have a spare that I would be more than willing to loan to you for testing. I bought 2 for my MSI Z690I build that I just finished and it unfortunately doesn't fit that board at all. Always like to have an extra laying around. Let me know if you are interested. Also, wanted to quiz you on a few things with your Sentry 2.0 build (I did basically the same build that you did, 12600K/ RTX 3090/ etc) that I'm not sure have really been talked about yet. At least not that I have seen.

Really would like to see you test the IS-47K with the fan flipped, that's how I and most ppl I have seen on forums using it, performs better from most people's testing

I had the IS-47k cooling my Ryzen 5 3600 and turned the fan facing downwards(the fan is not perfectly flat so you need some spacers to avoid the blades hitting the fins) and it's still just too loud and maxing out at 90 degrees celsius. Planning to just buy an LH9a later this year.

I am running a 3700x with the Noctua NH-L9a cooler in a Lazer3D LZ7 case. I built this pc late in 2019. And have been pretty happy with the temps. But, recently I started thinking about what kind of upgrades I could actually do. I think that a "better" CPU is not going to work well in this tiny case and I have not seen any ITX 3060 cards for sale--even if I could afford one. So I started thinking about possibly better cooling and lower noise. After watching this video, it sure seems like I've got it about as good as is possible in the 7 liter case I have. So, thanks for saving me a few dollars on trying another fan! Not many SFF videos leave me content with what I have, this seems a bit odd. :)
