I may have a theory on why it was interfering with wheels in certain positions but not all of them: Similarly to the flap wing, the seat consists of multiple pieces that can glitch out. When driving forward, some parts of it lag behind a bit, hit the wheel and cause the bounce. The foward part of the wheel moves downward, hits them and causes them to move down too. This results in an equal and opposite reaction to the wheel moving up. That's why you made frontflips when driving forward. I also thought about, whether it could be the player interfereing with the wheel. This seat is, as you noted, only three tiles long. This gives barely any buffer space around the player which could exaggerate the effect compared to other seats. It is rather unlikely that you will read this, but I want to thank anybody that did make it to here. Stay safe out there!

I'm so glad you covered this! I stumbled upon this glitch a while back and had no idea what was happening for a bit. You can replicate this fairly easily with the recommended simple car at the start of the stranded in space campaign. Just replace the two back wheels with a single centered back wheel and after the second bulldog gets installed the back end of the vehicle simply flies off the ground. My best guess as to what's happening is that the game's mechanics that have something to do with wheel grip on different surfaces isn't reacting to the seat correctly. But I can't say for sure. Just my best guess.

I've done a decent amount of testing to try and understand this glitch myself because it's happened on a bunch of my builds, but y'know what I just realized? _It's the player model colliding with the wheels_ When your character enters a seat, they're visibly stationary (aside from the various animations), _but_ the invisible collision box actually _moves_ outside of the seat boundaries depending on the direction and speed at which you're moving. You can visually represent this by using a go-kart seat and placing a distance sensor to aim across the upper section of the seat (ie: front of the seat aiming toward the back). By default, the sensor won't actually detect the seat, but it _will_ detect your character when you enter the seat (this can be used as a automatic engine ignition trick). If you keep the sensor at a range of 1.0 or lower though, you'll notice that it actually starts to cut out once you get above a certain speed because your character's collision box shifts further and further backwards as you speed up This explains why you couldn't replicate the glitch when the seat was so far in front of the back wheels (5 blocks ahead of it), the player collision box simply wasn't trailing back far enough to touch the back wheel in those specific instances. Though, I think it would still occur if you were going much faster
@Rade166412 сағат бұрын
It's probably just a wheel collider interfering with the seat collider. It's just a thing with the unity game engine. I saw the same thing happen with the wheels in KSP and TerraTech, and probably some other games games that use unity. You could probably make a kraken drive by using a piston to push a plate against the wheel, it should cause the creation to move without any other inputs.

8:44 Commenting before watching the whole video (ADHD, sorry): I wonder if the problem is the "seat controls" interacting badly with the gyro stabilisers (or control gyros too). A car will normally roll slightly when you turn and pitch when you accelerate and having a gyro trying to force it to not roll or pitch will probably both in real life and in this physics engine result in unexpected gyro effects. (In real life pushing on a gyro will give weird twisting forces on a different axis; and in a game engine the stabiliser "gyro" is probably just applying a turning force towards in whatever direction needs the smallest force to restore the up direction after all the other forces is calculated; and probably whenever the turning force from movement exceeds some value (probably when the roll force from turning is strong enough to make the car eventually flip without the gyro) it probably requires less force to flip rather than to oppose the force hence why you flip over (and sometimes shoot up in the air) so much.

I think what the problem you're facing in your drift car is seat controls causing the car to pitch down as you are pressing the w key. As you move the driver seat closer to the front wheels, the leverage is weaker due to more weight at the back. But as you move it away from them, it's easier for the seat to pitch down due to leverage. Not 100% sure, but it does look like what's happening in your video as you experiment with different ideas!. Just a thought! Keep up the awesome work!

Another thing that could be messing with your drift car is the speed. The drift car that you tried reverse engineering you could only go around 55 mph to drift, where as your drift car is going high 60s mid 70s. Your texting buggy was even in the 70s. This could explain why the transfer between switching from a left drift to a right drift and vise versa results in the little stutter. But I noticed that only happens when you’re going over 55 or 56 mph

You could have made it Mr. Bean's drift car and left it up there. The improvement was stunning. It's always the little things that you think don't matter. You think aerodynamic arrows don't matter too much? Or the orientation of the wedge doesn't matter? Or the height of the powered tailfin? Or in this case the seat? They all matter.
@ViniSocramSaintСағат бұрын
Great car. And great fix! I think the whole machine tipping is intended, as if a fast spinning wheel catch a piece of chassis, the spinning energy gets transferred to the chassis as kinetic energy, making it go up, and the rest of the wheels make it spin while on air. And it is more prone to happen if the patch of the wheel that scrapes "hits a wall" instead of "slipping under a slab", so that is why the direction the wheel spin is important. The problem is the collision in the car seat is bigger than expected, I think. The game engine may use a hull to calculate collisions, and the car seat may have some rogue piece of geometry that counts when calculating the hull or the geometry itself makes the hull get elongated.

i have a theory on why the wheels glitch out you know how on scrap's vids yzuei's build peices lag behind a bit and go back that must be what the physics client must be seeing thus adding random friction and bounces as if theres a build peice there and sometimes even reversed (the whole build lags behind the seat) similar to what happened to scrap in the dethrone vid in wich scrap kept having problems with his supension and wheels due to the random flying off glitch (where the steering hinge glitches out when hitting other blocks) and random complete stop (due to the wheels hitting the car) also this reminds me of the people playground thermo vision mode (the thermo node and thermo hit hitbox lags behind and sometimes to the front at high speeds) though my second theory (aka plan b of a theory) is the wheel rubber physics (how the wheels have physics when popped or pushed against an object) when wheels in trailmakers pop (or just stand alone) they simulate loose rubber physics and connected rubber physics (similar to how real life rubber works) MEANING that it might be the rubber wheel's hitbox hitting the pilot seat though though my final theory is just weight distribution though to work around it just dont use slim wheels for drifting as you might just need to slow down the back wheels a bit as friction on the front is higher then the back gets flinged to the sides OR just elevate the driver's seat up so it wont interfere with the wheels level wise though all of these are just theories and have no proof of concept YET so it might change BUT HEY THATS JUST A THEORY A GAME THEORY THANKS FOR READING also vid sugestion: drift race please? It looks like your issue is all about Center of Rotation which is changing based on your center of mass as well as the direction of converted torque. When you move forward, your vehicle is most likely being pushed down when your seat is farther forward due to increased weight at the front making your front wheels more stable. The smaller tires have lower friction values than the racing tires making it easier for them to lift off the ground. Trailmakers probably also doesn't have a completely perfect differential system for wheels when you take all of these different co-efficients into account. The stuttering may be caused by the wheel speed for either side not being perfectly isolated when you go into turns. That or its the above issue of low friction and center of mass affecting your rotation and your torque generated when you move forward.
@VuskenichtСағат бұрын
I know you preferred the old design, but the one with shifted forward seats looks more like a real car imo. The engine compartment usually only takes up 1/5-1/4 of the overall vehicle length. The rest is dedicated to passenger space or storage.

I dont watch all the video not sure if he found out but literally all the cause is when you attach a steering hinge on base build, the things you put on steering hinge clips thru the base building. But when you add another steering hinge or any functional block, (piston, large hinge, servo etc.) the things you put on second hinge will be granted a hitbox. So your car has pistons right before hinges. That makes wheels hit to fenders of your car. If you did make turning function with double steering hinges, (Like that example drift car which you tested in last video) wheels would turn in place, not moving forward to backward.
@guuspot92310 сағат бұрын
Sounds like steering force may be applied as an invisible quasi- block ahead of the wheels and it's hitbox can interfere with the build and vice versa.

on average drift cars are low and wide, your car seems more like turning a long thing car into a drift car, but thats more of a dragster like arrangement, but, the arrangment of seat and wheels for the car without the problems, the difference is where the wheels spawn, if you realise that the seats spawn in 3 or 4 blocks above the wheels but lower down into the range, this means its a bug caused on spawn more than actually due to build location

It almost seems that the player character's hitbox is still there while the player is seated in certain seats? If the player or seat hitbox is computed separately from the vehicles hitbox that could explain why the farther away you are from the back wheels the less chance there is for them to overlap since the player/seat's hitbox may be "lagging" behind a bit and being too close to the wheel hitbox? Depending on the frame/tick when each is calculated (there are certain delays there) could explain the "randomness". Devs should know how the whole vehicle's hitbox is calculated (why this problem is not there between other blocks) so just make the seat work the same and disable the player's hitbox if seated (if not done so already). If you want the player to have a hitbox even though they are seated, make a new one that's attached to / part of the vehicle itself and not just attached to the player/seat...
