@@TheWebstaff Wait, the side down has big holes in it, parts are splitting, why is it better? The thing that makes me go "meh" about this is that they did not even out the top of the stone to be level with bench. And the stones, I don't know, they could have work on them more, so they don't have markings from previous use (or visible markings from their work). Also I suspect that it will become wobbly with time (if it is not wobbly already) since it is just laying on rocks.

This looks like you cut a notch in a rock and plopped a piece of wood on it, messed up and just said "Meh, she's a grandmother, she will love it anyway", like when a grandkids gives you a drawing and you don't know what it is, but you take it and say nice things about it, just to be nice... But I guess this is what you get when you rush to get things done for KZbin...Should have went back for a new rock 🥴

You should've gone back and found another rock to use for the other side. It looks weird on that 2nd side. The side with the dovetail looks incredible, but you should've curved edges. I love one side, but the flat side just lets it down, and I am not sure how secure it is in gravel with toddlers running riot. Or even climbing on it. The idea was fantastic though! Just wish you'd taken time to do that 2nd side properly.

I do it all the time, I use a spray bottle in one hand grinder in the other, and spray the front of the blade as it enters the cut. Works really well at keeping dust down, I still wear a mask though because I like breathing. As long as you don't soak the body of the grinder you won't get shocked, even if you do resistance is high enough you just get a little tingling.

You really could have done better. Being that it was a type of sand stone, you should have tried a wire wheel to smooth it out. Also, why leave all the harsh edges on the wood and stone? It's literally intended for children. That should have been as round as possible. We obviously can't see everything, or the video would be several hours, but this feels rushed and like you just didn't want to

In the original video you can clearly see how the rock was levelled with the wood in the dovetail. It perfectly fit together to give a smooth top instead of the uneven mess here. Don't even get me started on the other side. I understand it was something quick and dirty for a video but i would not want to see or use that bench at all.

We have a saying in our family when something is half done or turns out poorly: That looks like something my cousin Jeff would have made. Well, this bench looks like something my cousin Jeff would have made. The concept of one side “doved” and the other not is cool. The execution on the dovetail itself is awful. The original blended the lines of the stone and wood in a very organic way. Yours is choppy and looks haphazard. Kids will scrape their legs on the sharp edges of the stone. Very poorly designed and executed. You’re better than this, John, particularly on a gift for family.

If everyone had a good time doing this, and the end result was genuinely enjoyed by the Mom...cool. But the majority of comments here echo my feelings...it looks half done and unprofessional. -Once it was apparent that a dovetail couldn't be done in the one stone, a new stone should've been procured. -All edges & corners, both stone and wood, should've been rounded off. -While I'm obviously not going to suggest that huge stones like this be "tumbled", they definitely should've been ground/sanded a bit smoother. -The gravel the bench is sitting on is eventually going to scatter/settle. Ground should be planed free of debris for a permanent seat. If you're looking at comments like mine and saying: "Well you do it better, then!"...you need realize that you're defending poor craftsmanship. No, I can't do better, because I'm not a professional wood or stone worker...but I know for a fact that this crew CAN do better. I also know what looks good...and this bench ain't it.

!! Chopped Weiner warning !! I get it, most people take the guard of their angle grinder. If you do, PLEASE do not use segmented blades like shown in this video. This is not a joke. I know a guy who got his "Weiner" chopped off when the blade came apart. I'm not sure what is worse, cutting that body part off or having the broken blade segment stuck in your Femoral Artery. I do mean IT came off. He was not wearing underwear and it did fall out the bottom of his pants. His Buddy, who was passing by his house at the time, saw him struggling in the yard and stopped to help. Yes, his Buddy brought his noodly appendage to the hospital for him. Love the videos! Love the projects! Love you All ! Please be safe out there. 😊 Oh, ha! IT was reattached with one slight deviation. He claims it just made it more unique 😂. He had to argue with the Dr. She wanted to save his life, he wanted to save the Weiner. Also, broken blades are not a rare occurrence. My uncle got a broken segment stuck into the back of his hand between his thumb and index finger while we were shaping granite. Please be safe!

That floating idea is possible. Build a recess in the bench bottom to hold a square stock. Have it go 90 recessed in the side of the rock. Stick below the rock bottom then another 90 to go back "under ground" the bench. Maybe build a small cement pad with studs. Dig the dirt out for the pad to be under ground. It should make it appear floating on one side while the rock "holds" up the other side. Please please redo this one. It looks cheesy man I know you can do better.

Quick, superficial geology lesson; limestone is a term describing the chemical composition of the rock (and that it has "only" solidified by diagenesis, not metamorphosis - in which case, it would become marble), whereas sandstone describes the grain size of the rock. A limestone can be of sand sized grains, and thus appear "sandy" when you cut it👍👍

I respect the effort and venturing into something you don’t do every day. I think only dovetailing one side turned off people. It’s unique and I am sure she loved it. That’s all, that matters not a bunch of internet opinions good or bad.

I love John's vids. This was a great idea, but really poorly executed and rushed through. No care in the final product. I'd expect a beginner to do a better job. And I'm hating even writing this comment.

Bro, as respectfully as possible, we don’t mind waiting a longer amount of time between videos if it means we’re gonna get to see you do it right.

would’ve been so simple to round the walnut to fit the contours of the rock around the dovetail. also, you should deffo know that lowering the blade guide on your bandsaw to right above the wood will give you less deflection

people say fix your mistakes, you just tried the biggest easiest stone you saw, wanted to make a dove tail but chose 1 of the rocks that didnt have the other lip for the dove tail then just chose the easy way out. the only thing that looks nice is the wood.
