On the argument of Australians correcting pronunciation just being "them saying it in an accent", when Lt. Raine says "buongiorno" in Inglorious Basterds in a fucking thick American accent, it's literally a joke about how he's pronouncing it wrong because he didnt say it in an Italian accent. In Japanese, most words require you put on a Japanese accent so you can actually pronounce them right and be understood. You have to say "Cairns" and "Melbourne" in an Australian accent because that's how you pronounce them properly, if you don't, you're pronouncing it wrong - the Australians are right

trevor, you started beef with australia when you left us off the wheel! also, you actually kind of have a point with the city pronunciation. although the butchering of "cairns" doesn't get any less painful each time. that being said, many place names in australia are adapted from local indigenous words and therefore the specific vowels and emphases are integral to correct pronunciation (else you might be saying a different word altogether). wagga wagga (pronounced like "wogga wogga", not "wahgga wahgga") and canberra (pronounced with emphasis like "CANburRA", not "canBEHra") are good examples that come to mind.
@zpirateko2129Ай бұрын
There isn't really a "correct" way to pronounce place names. It doesn't matter if it's adapted from aboriginal names either, we speak English, whether or not we are saying a different word in one of their local language is of no importance.
