Oh girrrrrrrl this is the real right there. “Is it actually best for her” the question I ask allllllll the time! It’s so easy for us to pick our choice but is it their best choice.

We started our school year last Monday, and by the end of the week I already had to change our language arts unit. My kiddos did not like the book that I bought a unit study for. That unit was supposed to carry us all through the first nine weeks of school. So I had to make some changes and reorganize.

Love that you listened to them and changed things up! Hope the new book you choose goes better for you guys!

Thank you so much for this! This is exactly the same situation I’m in. My son is starting 9th grade as well. I had everything planned out too and then I started debating on the curriculum. We were going to do biology as well. I decided to ask my son if he’d actually like that. He usually just says “I don’t care” or “whatever works”. He has no interest in doing biology. He mentioned possibly doing chemistry. So now I’m starting from scratch and have no idea what to do. Most chemistry curriculums want them to complete algebra 1 first. 😅
@Homeschoolology5 ай бұрын
Chemistry is quite a bit of math at the high school level. I agree with the recommendation of completing Algebra 1 first. But you could totally do something like kitchen chemistry to get ready for the concepts! Good for you for listening to your gut and making some changes! I know I'm glad I did.

I love the honesty and transparency you bring in this video. I’m right there with you, listening to what works for our kids and running with it - not easy but ultimately I feel they learn and retain more when we follow their lead. Looking forward to how this progresses for you as I’m walking this same road right now. You’ve got this 👍🏼

My 8th grade daughter is doing a research project for social studies and she thanked me for asking her to as she’s obsessed with Japanese culture so I asked her to add in history and geography of Japan!!! I agree that kids should learn how they want to!!!i often don’t know how homeschooling will look like till we get to a topic as well!!! I love it!!! I love seeing my kids learn the best way for them!!! I do a lot of planning and then make it open and go!!! As I buy a lot of digital curriculum I don’t buy a curriculum till we are close to using it!!!

We start 9th this year as well. I have asked my son for input, but he is just the type that doesn't give a strong opinion. But i know he does better with shorter units of study. We tried year long topics the past few years and everything just felt a bit off. Entering HS I struggle with how to do unit study type learning while also creating courses for transcripts. That is my biggest hang up. If we want to study WWII then bounce over to European culture and geography, then some American history, then who knows what😂 how do I create a course from that for a transcript? That worry is what is holding me back from doing our preferred unit study style learning.

I agree. That was part of my struggle as well. If you think of something, let me know. And I'll be sure to update if I come up with a plan. LOL

I think layers of learning would work. Instead of starting from the beginning just pick what she is interested in and use them like unit studies. The LOL Facebook group helped us a lot get in the groove of how to make it flow. If she’s not that into something she can spend less time on it and if it’s a subject she likes she can do a deeper dive into the topic and do more explorations.
