Even comparing now and like 10 years ago. I was quite irritated a while back when I looked out the window in the evening and saw one of those rental cars that had an actual screen in the window playing ads towards my bedroom. Well into the evening. I was seriously mad because the district in our city we live in has only a little number of shops, and is mostly housing. It's for now a relatively free environment of the Kapitalist facade. We also have a small kiosk on the ground level of our building that now also has one of those screens in the window playing adds all night, but at least I don't see it from my flat. I know the owner has to take every business opportunity he gets, and it's depressing to think that in order to properly run and manage anything really, we will have to get used to more and more adds down our throat. And if we don't want them we are forced to pay even more for a membership.

As a russian, I smile at the american "wartime food rationing" and it being healthy to americans. During WWII, the city of Saint Petersburg, which was called Leningrad at the time, was sieged by nazis for 872 days, two and a half years. The food rationing was - half a piece of bread. 1,5 million people died during the siege, however cannibalism was almost non-existent, and animals in the Leningrad zoo were untouched. People mostly died of artillery strikes and bombardments. I wish people were more grateful to the riches of food and water they have access to today.

I decided this year is not a 'no buy,' year for me, it's a 'make do and mend' year a la 1930's and 40's, out of both necessity and pure spite for overconsumption and greed-flation. I'm using up scrap fabric, food scraps, learning how to darn my socks, and how to generally fix everything I can figure out how to fix. I'm having a lot of fun so far, and I think it's pretty cool to learn how to do things that my grandparents did and that my parents never bothered to teach me because they didn't think I'd ever need it. My boomer mom is the only one who thinks I'm insane for doing this, but she also genuinely doesn't understand how worse off my financial situation is from hers due to chronic illness which severely restricts my work situation (also I'm in the US so...privatized health insurance hell), student debt which I will never be able to paid back, and rising prices of everything. Learning how to do all of these seemingly 'little' or 'outdated' skills has given me some sense of control and pride that I can do some things for myself. It's revolutionary.

When we married, in the early 80’s, we bought a 2 up 2 down house and it was furnished from a friends aunt dying and them clearing the house, giving us some beautiful Wilton carpets, my great uncles home being cleared after death gave us a spare bedroom set, a friends aunty upgrading their 3 piece suite gave us a lovely suite. I had built my own “bottom drawer” box as a teen, pans, cutlery, tin opener, towels and tea towels etc. When I look at the 2000’s, couples were basically going into Next and getting brand new on tick for their homes when setting up together. I don’t know how they could afford it, and all that debt, just to keep up with the Joneses? No thank you. I was brought up to only buy what I could afford. Today we have a detached paid off 3 bed bungalow in a nice sized garden. No debts, it’s a nice feeling, I feel for young folk today who can’t see themselves buying a home easily, with uni debt, etc. No wonder birth rates are falling. So sad.

Avoiding overconsumption is something I consciously think about at all times. I'm not a super consumptive person, most of what I own is second hand, I only change my electronics when they stop working and I try to be as mindful as I can with beauty products and food. But still, we're so bombarded with information all the time I often get myself thinking I desperately need to buy something I already have or have had before and didn't like. I often pause, give it a few days and suddenly that need isn't there anymore. It's a topic that needs to be talked about more often because most of the time people don't realise what they're doing.

The world at the moment isn't a safe place, so why not use the knowledge given by our predecessors and put that to good use. This being said, I've a passion for history and dabbled with being frugal. However, now I'm more determined to not just dabble but actually put a lot more thought into things. So many people are what I like to call sheepeople, like to follow the latest fads and fashions of the moment . None of this is going to make people happy in the long run, it's just a placebo effect. I count myself lucky that I was brought up by my grandparents whom we're of the wartime generation ethos, I learned so much and continued to do so in my work as a gardener, listening to wonderful accounts from some of my elderly customers and learning new skills and crafts. And finally what you said in regards to rationing, diabetes was the lowest it had ever been at that time, so much so I use a lot of recipes from that time to make meals for us as my partner is a type 1 diabetic. I definitely think we all have too much low quality stuff. The only thing I'd say about holding up ww2 lifestyle as potentially better is that both my parents had diagnosed malnutrition during ww2 and the years after when various parts of rationing continued. They both also talk about cold poor quality housing. It was pretty brutal on growing children. They felt the the consequences of poor childhood health for the rest of their lives.
@adaynadir
@adaynadir Күн бұрын
This. Audrey Hepburn was that tiny and walked that way due to malnutrition during WW2. Not many countries managed to feed their people well with rationing. In Spain after the Civil War, and well after WWII things were dire, people would cook potato peels that the stole from afluent houses' garbage. I think the biggest difference is that back then people cooked at home, and restaurant food were a rare treat, rather than having fast food delivered every other night, and half prepped meals being thrown in an air frier the other half. There's a reason countries like Spain, Italy, France, have less obesity in general, and that's cos they still make most of their meals from scratch

I found that having to cut out random, over-consuming made paying bills much easier. That is my goal for the year, for at least the first four months. One thing I found among my generation is we want what we couldn't have as a child, or trying to create a childhood memories. Unfortunately, some of those things are expensive now. I did compare the price of one item in a vintage catalog to the same item currently. I know understand why I didn't always get what I wanted.

If I see one more YT add or email from Purdy & Figg I’m feeling I might have to get in the car and drive to HQ and give them a piece of my mind! Driving me mad. And now, most assuredly, a product I will never buy. We need to consume less, yes. But advertisers need to understand how counterproductive bombardment is. With so much poverty and homelessness in the U.K. now, we could really do with a return of the Lyon’s Corner House. These were the communal, inexpensive, canteens that sprang up during WW2 to ensure almost everyone could have a hot meal and tea even in hardship. We eat far too much now and far too much sugar. But I have no idea how wives fed families on the rations they had. Everyone tried to keep a few rabbits for the pot or a chicken or two for eggs. 1 egg per person, per week was the ration! I have really reduced my consumerism in the last 10 years. And I am happier for it. I don’t feel the urge to shop all the time, I spend way less. Now things get replaced when broken or no longer fit for purpose. Not just to have the latest model. As for Stanley cups. Somebody is having a laugh. They are the ugliest “cup” I’ve ever seen and completely unnecessary. Love your content. It’s refreshing.

Funnily enough I was thinking about this at work today as I work for a manufacturing company. I'd like to think I'm not like that. I don't use any social media, apart from KZbin or even watch TV so not bombarded with ads there trying to get you to buy the latest thing. I do cook from scratch a lot. I want a car to get me from A to B and that's it so that's why mines nearly nineteen years old! I only buy clothes when I really really need them. I'm lucky because I can make things and fix things. I have several pieces of furniture I have restored with the oldest being a late Victorian cupboard I use for my larder. I do try and make, reuse and up cycle things. I will always try and fix something before replacing it. I think a lot of the problem is easy credit. Buy now, pay later. Pay over instalments etc. While these things should be available, but just maybe not quite so easy. Don't get me started on the 'must have' phrase advertiser's use.😡

My answer - learning about where my waste goes and taking my own rubbish to my local recycling centre when possible. Being the one to actually haul all that stuff around has incentivised me to have much less stuff and throw less away too!

In post-COVID Canada, I find it concerning that our government, that was willing to restrict our activities, and mandate vaccines for accessing restaurants and returning to work in certain jobs, was silent about how we could collectively respond to the inflation that predictably resulted from their handouts during a time of supply chain disruption. If they were willing to interfere with the economy, why did they not help us avoid this cost of living crisis? I saw a US propaganda poster from 1944, with a message we could really use now: “Why shouldn’t I buy it? I’ve got the money! … It isn’t yours to spend as you like. … There just aren’t as many things to buy as there are dollars to spend. … Put it in the bank… Pay off old debts and don’t make new ones… Then your money can’t force prices up. “Use it up… Wear it out… Make it do… Or do without” We need to conserve the earth’s resources, and use what we have wisely so everyone on earth can have enough.

I watched your “when men were men” video. I think this video helps explain that video a lot. Add in that, like women, men are subjected to impossible standards and you can understand why we are all in crisis. They did a study and found male athletes are more likely to commit suicide than non athletes. 2 kids in my son’s baseball club committed suicide 2 years ago. I had watched my son’s mental health decline due to the culture in that club and when he said he didn’t want to play anymore, I didn’t stop him. I know the parents of the two kids made a different choice(one dad worked for the club, and the other parent thought quitting was a bad thing). Anyway. The pressures and toxic cultures around being the best are hard, and the standards are out of reach. My son chose to go straight to work after high school and so many older people questioned why he wasn’t doing college. Anyway, as a parent of 3 kids 18-23 I see a lot of the pressure they face that my husband and I didn’t, and it makes a lot of sense why men in particular struggle.

I like your video and there were so many things I was thinking while watching. I am married with 4 children and we live on less than $40K a year. We chose this lifestyle because homeschooling our children and me staying at home with the children was very important to us more so than owning a huge home with more than one bathroom, driving new cars or taking holidays every year. People are always shocked when they find out how we live and wonder how we can afford "so many kids" and me be at home. Well it's because we are thrifty and live below our means. Also people need to be aware of who their friends are and what influences they put on your life. I personally surround myself with people who live like me and live on a budget therefore when we spend time together there is no pressure to impress each other. The younger generations could really learn to be more wise like those in the past and perhaps even be more happy and mentally balanced if they stopped being slaves to corporate commercialism and turn off their phones!

When I can afford what I need, this makes me very happy. When I buy more than I need, this makes me less happy. Personally at times of overconsumption I usually think I need the item I’m buying, but in hindsight I’m not really thinking at all. Reflex spending is all too easy now, where it wasn’t when you had to physically go outside and travel and probably queue to acquire things. Even physically shopping is so much easier because there’s shops on every corner and multiple shops selling the same thing in one place. Self rationing is the only way to go I think now, maybe even harder than adhering to restrictions put in place by governing bodies or simply from not having access to money ( or credit ), but so worth the effort. Learning from our historical experiences alongside taking an objective view of the realities of today’s consumer led society must go hand in hand. Thank you so much for providing such enjoyable and informative content that supports happier and more thoughtfully lived lives ❤

I spent a year 12 years ago where all I did was stay indoors and go to hospital for chemotherapy and we didn't have the Internet then. My friends when they visited me would talk about the latest gadget they bought and what they had bought at the shops and there was me not buying "stuff". I made things for myself in that time, I got more enjoyment making things for myself then my friends did buying stuff. I recycled fabrics from worn out clothes and since then my favourite phrase has been life is more important than stuff enjoy the little things

When you push away from the world as it is at the moment I begin to realise just how much we get brainwashed. I was in middle management for a large American company and one day just walked away from it. Since then I just want a quieter life. Make Do and Mend is a mantra towards that peace . It actually makes me throw up a little in my mouth at the excess. I don't want to sound dramatic either but it does make you look at things differently. ❤❤

I was born in 1961 and chose a long time ago to live with in my means. I always studied history especially the 1930’s and 1940’s. I wanted to work part time when my kids were home. So I prioritized needs over wants. Frankly consuming just for the sake of consuming never appealed to me. I commend you in bringing up this subject. It is so necessary

I agree with that, l don't believe in getting into debt if you don't need to. I don't like credit cards or overdrafts, if l can't afford something, l save until l can. I can't believe the amount of young people who don't think twice about getting into debt for thing's they don't need.

To be fair, the US is so huge that mail order enabled people to get items that they needed that they couldn't get locally. That includes things like children's shoes. When I say that the country is huge, I mean that the whole of the uk can fit in a state (depending on the state) or few.

That is an excellent point! I've never been to the US, it is very much on the list and I don't think I can truly fathom its size. I've had a couple of family members move there in the last couple of years who were both born and raised in Britain, and, yes, the actual scale had them flabbergasted ❤

I want to commend you for your vision and mission. I could not agree with you more. We over consume and I do believe we consume to compensate or overcompensate for things we think we need. As a much younger woman, my grandmother shared a gem of advice with me. If there is some item, product, appliance, etc. that you want to buy-wait at least 2 weeks minimum and see how well or poorly you are doing without the “item” in your life. Make a mental note or journal the pros and cons of having or not having this “whatever” in your life. It’s amazing how many things you can do without. She then encouraged me to save the money I would have spent if I chose not to make the purchase. I still use this advice today as a much older woman.

I am a certificate welder and trained blacksmith, and the machine which I do my welding was gifted to me by my grandfather, does the job of a brand new one just as well. Am hoping that in this year, more people throughout the world will think twice before they overspend on vanity items. They will ask themselves: “ Do I really need those Jimmy Choo pumps, does my child really need clothes from Ralph Lauren (yes, I am an American baby boomer); who am I trying to impress? And although those TESLA cars are cute, can I resist the urge to buy one? Does Elon Musk really need my hard earned money?

Just before Christmas I went to see my friend and her dining room porch were so full of parcels it was hard to move around, yet these weren't hers they were her daughters who only had 1 baby so they must have been for the mum and dad she must have spent thousands.

People buying these consumer goods, just make the rich richer and the consumer's with more debt. They must love it, we just keep financing them with our money! Needless to say, i stopped following what the elite wanted us to do a few years ago and live simply which makes me very happy and contented.

Good video, and welcome for the time. Some years ago I switched my priorities to having a simpler life, and owning fewer - yet better things. I find it easier to stop and treasure what I already have, instead of getting something new. The rewards are many, including less need for income, more time to enjoy life, and the satisfaction of not contributing as much to the destruction of our environment. Thanks for posting, and say hi to your mum.

Rationing there might've been great, but let's remember not all countries did it well. Spain had a great diet, but after the Civil War things got so dire people would steal scraps such as orange and potato peels from more afluent houses to make their own "food" at home. The fact that some rationing meals became traditional in some countries, while in others they were quickly left behind and talked about as a lesson to be learnt shows the bast difference. I'm so happy to see more and more people speaking out against consumerism. Also, the big difference between consumerism then and now... people then would have enough and heads would roll, look at the French and Russian revolutions. Middle class is slowly dying and more and more people cannot afford to live while a tiny amount of people become richer at our expense and we just take it on the chin, brainwashed as we are by them telling us that being millionaires is within our means if we just tried just a little harder. Makes me sick

I agree with you about buying modern 'tat' which has no intrinsic value. I am old school and only buy antique or vintage items. I grew as a child from parents that were born just before the WW2. I think that kind of impacted them. Mum was posh because her parents had an indoor bathroom. Dad's parents had a loo in the yard. Dad did really well, despite seemingly a low background, although grandad was a self-employed carpenter. Dad went to university and gained a Bsc and went on to gain a BA just after my twin brother and I were born. We moved down south where my father was Head of Modern of Languages into a 'posh house'. I have to tell you, all through our childhood we were ever conscious of frugality through our parents. I've got to be honest...I really enjoy your content but if you asked me to pay for it the frugal bunny would say 'no'. Look at the sponsorship thing again..

Last year all I bought was a pack of cheap knickers from Tesco and a new pair of shoes because the ones I had started to fall apart. That's all and probably the year before I didn't buy anything. I'm still wearing clothes that were bought between 10 and 20 years ago. I have to say that I'm retired now and don't go anywhere so I don't need many clothes but even when I was working I didn't buy much.
