Thanks for the updates. Having lived in both places, I have a hunch that Shawn would have a better life in the Philippines. He should check out Latin America, too, a way better choice today than SE Asia on every measure. We have reciprocal property rights and an easy permanent residency visa there without the Thai Immigration never-ending jerk-around. Even 2A if you want it. (Second Amendment).
