Fair play to you Graeme, out of all the UK KZbin fishing channels, you are the most enthusiastic angler of them all. Your love of fishing is infectious and I'm sure you inspire many other anglers. I've been fishing for over 50 years, and like you, I do it old school. I'm not interested in stocked fish or fish that get caught every month and have names. I won't even use electronic alarms or boilies, I get my fun from fishing as a fisherman, not capturing fish that catch themselves because of technology. Keep it up mate, we're a dying breed.

You are correct about the Arlesley bomb, it was designed for perch fishing at distance and he designed it to be very aerodynamic. He also designed a one-off live-bait perch float. While I've caught various types of perch of 5 pounds and up (most of our native fish here in Oz are types of perch) I've never seen a redfin perch of that size! Probably about 3-4 pounds would be it. I know in the UK you get some monsters, but here anything over 2 pounds is a big one. The vast majority that I've caught were under a pound and a half. I find pike to be an amazing fish. Sometimes I wish we had them here. What you were saying about the various strengths of hooks makes a lot of sense. I think I'd rather change the occassional hook and maybe lose a fish than constantly breaking off and retying the whole rig. Those were some pretty nice barbel to break the blank with. Well done.

Hi Graeme- just noted in your Wye no-pike trip that again your GoPro battery died in use. Their capacity is hopeless as they die unpredictably. Unless you have a bag of them and change them when a quiet moment arrives so forestalling camera-death at an important moment. I got around that with a GPro 7 Black by either opening or removingg the little usb port door/cover, exposing the USB-C port. Plugged in a usb c cable connected to a lithium energy bank with more than enough charge capacity to last hours. You lose waterproofing but being careful negates that potential downside. There's loads of those available from the usual suspects like Amazon etc. Of course you'll need a huge memory card to record a lengthy session if you just let it run and run. Hope this might avoid future catches-not filmed? Thanks for persisting with that difficult pike result. You're the sort of fisher I wish I was!!!
@TAFishing Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. Mike bought some oriental batteries and they just flake out early,especially in cold weather. I think the older the battery for any product reduces in life ,and maybe I should check what life is left before I press record. But filming everything myself its often a matter of seconds trying to get setup if I hook a fish. I have one of Mike's old 7's so I could try the external battery you suggested with that. Trouble is that one also has a problem of suddenly shutting down,not working on the buttons and I have to pop the battery and refit to make it fire up again. I'm lucky to be able muddling through with various cameras and eventually come out with a film. Thanks for the tip though.

We have a Facebook page,but if you look on it you'll see I don't even know how to reply,I just ping son Mike a picture and he does all that. I don't follow anybody on KZbin as I just do my own thing. I do drop into Blacktip H with Josh in Florida sometimes as obviously I did years of foreign fishing and loads of trips to Florida chasing everything from Bonefish and Tarpon in the backcountry to offshore Sailfish and Tiger shark fishing. But as for others I just don't get the time to look. I might stumble on stuff like dogs doing ratting ,or boats getting swamped at Haulover inlet ,but that's because I like dogs and boats !!....I guess I am just too busy either working,filming ,editing,or gardening...I don't even sit down to watch TV until 10pm and then scan 300 programmes in an hour trying to find something worth watching .Mike even told me the "hook" of attention span of a viewer's programme starting is...don't be shocked..just 3 seconds before they click off !! then viewers are gone....It takes me more than 3 seconds to find the right button on the remote. Oh yes,and there has to be potatoes in there somewhere.

The Arlesey Bomb is an angling weight developed by Richard Walker at the lake in Arlesey. Walker fished for perch in the lake, and very large perch could be caught in the deepest water. The Arlesey Bomb was developed to allow him to cast the long distances required.[1] It is tear-shaped, with a loop at the top to attach the line. Its shape makes it aerodynamic to cast, but unlikely to snag on the river or lake bottom. The incorporation of a swivel also prevented the line getting twisted.[2] Arlesey lake is now a private lake, there is not a reservoir in Arlesey but there is the Blue and Green lagoons but they are a few miles from the original Arlesey lake in Bedfordshire not far from where I live.
@borderlands6606 Жыл бұрын
Developed being the right word, and popularised, because there were similar weights around previously. On the subject, anyone remember Capta leads? They were a pyramid shaped job designed to dig into a soft river bed.
@TAFishing Жыл бұрын
The "Capta" style of leads are big on the Eastern seaboard of the States with the surf guys. I don't think they are into the wired grip leads yet,but the old designed does still work,just a pain to wind in as they hit bottom whereas our UK wired leads can break out and reduce resistance on the retrieve.
@borderlands6606 Жыл бұрын
@@TAFishing The lead must kite all over the place on the retrieve. Slightly off topic, I've been thinking of adapting a pulley rig for dead baiting. Fished a large reservoir recently, and even with a big pit reel it's hard to get the distance with two weights (the lead and a whole fish) on the cast. The larger pike are holed up in what was the river gulley under the reservoir. It's lure only until October so I've got the summer to ponder things.

With water that clear. The best option would have been to stick on the most natural looking lure you had in your box and keep trying. Pike are funny though. Sometimes they'll take a lure that has a crazy high-vis fluro greens, yellows, reds and whites and other times they wont want to touch it at all and go for something more natural --- and sometimes its the other way round. You never really know till you try.

My body is coming towards the end ??...Boy,I bet you are fun at a party ..!!...But yes,you are indeed correct,hence the old saying,"the mind is willing but the body isn't"... I watched all the programmes on it..Sorry they never interviewed regular coarse fish anglers who actually fish the river for Barbel,Chub,Roach etc, For myself I can only say last year I caught more Barbel than I have ever done before up there ,but then I am not a regular and consider myself very "late to the party" so I have no real idea what it was like years ago. But I have noticed the lack of weed and brown sludge over the stones and that was filming over just 3/4 years. That's a hugely rapid change.
