definitely will start doing caps the same way with snipping, awesome idea. what's the fiberglass Pen do, help keep things in place i assume? didn't even know they existed, great video btw
@Zebpro2 жыл бұрын
Fiberglass pens are abrasive and remove corosion from chips pins, they can also be use to remove solder mask to access copper to repair damages tracks or pads.
@ChrisEdwardsRestoration2 жыл бұрын
Yup
@giornikitop53732 жыл бұрын
although it's a good technic, would soldering tweesers be faster and equaly safe? be carefull with these pens. given enough scraping, a fiberglass pen will remove just about anything on the board, that being dirt, corrosion, masks, traces, copper you name it. also always use gloves and NEVER let those shards go into your eyes or your in for a very bad time.
@ChrisEdwardsRestoration2 жыл бұрын
@@giornikitop5373 hakko soldering tweezers work well as do some chinese knock offs, but this method guarantees a safe pad removal with 2 steps, snip, remove, snip debraid and clean, been doing it for years never lost one yet.

ALS240 near the slot. HC132, generally I remove them and clean under them. I'd have removed the corroded silk screen too. Just did a IICI where the HC132s were just done. Then again, I do more macs than I can count.

As always great stuff Chris. Quick question, (hopefully you haven’t answered this too many time before), what is your opinion of ultrasonic cleaning? Does that accomplish some of the same things you did here I.E. cleaning out the gunk underneath chips or is there really no substitute for doing it the way you showed in the video? Hopefully that makes sense.

Nothing wrong with fixing a Mac. I do not and have never owned an Amiga. I still enjoy watching you fix them, in the event I ever do get one. I went straight from my C64 to the PC. Couldn't afford an Amiga then and the crazy prices of retro machines these days seem like they'll make that a permanent situation... Also, thanks for showing the correct way to remove a surface mount cap. It drives me nuts when I see certain big-time Retro KZbinrs do the "twist" method. The mechanical shearing forces involved would be tough for a pad that hadn't had electrolytic goo leaking on it, much less one covered in schmoo. I had various IPC and NASA solder, rework and cabling certs for 20+ years, and It drives me absolutely crazy to see parts damaged due to sheer laziness.

I have repaired so many Amiga's with ripped off pads over the years due to people twisting them off. This dumb idea started with a guy on AMIBAY.

@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I'm surprised Adrian still does it that way. Your technique is just as easy and makes a lot of sense in protecting the contacts. Maybe he just hasn't seen your method yet. He seems to be a pretty practical guy so I can't imagine him thumbing his nose at good techniques.

Chris if you use the pen on the pins to get rid of the corrossion won't that cause future corrosion because it has scraped off anything protecting the pins. Is that what you did?

Awesome Mac repair! I really like your method for cap removal too! Quick question. I'm buying my hot air and solder station very soon, and wondered about flux. I saw that Amazon has Kester 186 and 591 (no clean) in 2oz bottles for reasonable amounts. The bottles look like yours. What do you use for flux???
@ChrisEdwardsRestoration2 жыл бұрын
i use two types, kester 186 liquid no clean (that you have to clean) and Chipquick paste for those stubborn ones. you want a paste for hot air removal as it will not blow away with the air pressure. liquid is great for attaching w an iron or debraiding to help it flow

This whole surface mounted capacitor turd thing... I have a AMIGA 500 do i have to be worried? Please do a separate video decaping the suckers, i did see jack shait in this video! Dr. Chris show us some tricks related to fix the AMIGAS please ! 😊
@JeremyLevi2 жыл бұрын
The A500 doesn't have any surface mount caps in it. Only real concern is if you have a trapdoor ram expansion with a battery backed up clock as a lot of those use a leaky barrel battery instead of a button cell. Usually it will just destroy the RAM expansion card though, although occasionally it can make its way into the motherboard via the expansion connector. [If it's an A500+ though, that has the clock and battery on the motherboard which can definitely cause issues.]
@jimmihenry2 жыл бұрын
@@JeremyLevi Thank you Jeremy. I did fortunately divorce the Varta from my RAM expansion! However i already paid the price, damage has been done. The motherboard is O.K. i think. No stinky caps on my AMIGA :) GOOD. Now i only need the Chicom ones for replacement, or what were they called? Japan the land of AMIGA replacement caps.
