As a 10 year old in 1994, it's impossible to overstate just how HUGE of a story this was when it happened. When it was shown that Tonya had something to do with the incident, everyone was shocked. I have to say, whether it's right or wrong, it is hard not to sympathize with Tonya after it came to light what she went through. Great reaction to a great movie!❤

This was such a big deal when it happened. I was in a casino in vegas, people stepped away from the slot machines and walked into the sports betting room to watch Tonya skate on TV. The who crowd started jeering when Tonya began crying and protested her shoelace issues. 1994 was a heckuva year - Northridge Quake, Kurt Cobain, OJ, Tonya

@criminalcontent The stenographer was an actual stenographer, and the director asked her what would happen at this point. She told him the bailiff would tell the defendant to rise, so instead of just standing there as I was, he gave me that line. It's called an upgrade from Extra to Role player. My pay went from $100 to $1000 just for that one line.

You know those times you asked if that really happened? Yes, they happened. The killer is that Tonya was a powerful skater. She was arguably less elegant than she was powerful. It's a shame that she was surrounded by people who harmed her. I remember it was a huge story on the news about how Nancy Kerrigan was attacked. And it was a huge event when she went out in front of an international audience and had to ask to start over because of her bootlace. It was all rather dramatic and sad. She deserved better.

It's not hard to find people on twitter asserting that Tonya beat Kerrigan in person, or planned and approved the whole thing, which the film directly addresses. She didn't, but there is some Mandela effect going on. The huge array of eccentric characters is too complex for people to remember, so their brains have oversimplified it to "evil Tonya". Tonya didn't deserve any of what the world inflicted on her.

Neither did Nancy. That was Tonya's world. She made Nancy famous. All she had to do was play fair. Nancy's practice schedule was in Tonya's handwriting. That proves she had prior knowledge. The movie is another narcissistic action in the twisted world Tonya created by being envious & evil. The world didn't inflict anything. Tonya did. She blamed her mother, husband, the bodyguard. All because she wanted a gold medal. She skated better than Nancy & probably could've beat her fairly.

I wish the film mentioned she was the second woman in the World to land the Triple Axel! It was a big deal, as only she and Midori Ito (the first to land it) were doing it. Those of us in the skating world knew a lot of Tonya's struggles, but not to this extent. She definitely did wrong, even just wanting "letters" deserved punishment, but she didn't deserve to be punished her whole life, which is what has happened. Jeff just got off with a slap on his wrist, changed his name and is invisible now. It is so unfair! This movie points out how women get punished more for not being perfect. 😔

P. S. Margot had hockey skated as a kid, so didn't start from ground zero. But she trained a few months with skating coaches in L.A.! I know some skater friends from that rink who were like, "Who's this new adult skater? She's pretty good"! Lol. She does everything at the beginning of the programs, until they get into the real skating, then it is doubles. As a skater, I was impressed!

You have to realize that at the time, protections for victims of domestic abuse were not what they are now. Calling the police was not so easy before cell phones. I encourage you to look up the news reports of the time.

Yes, it was pretty normal for this stuff to just be tolerated through inaction by the authorities, since the cops were overwhelmingly men. And women were seen as chattels who were just being "kept in line."

The film let's Tonya off easy. She's admitted that she knew about the plot while it was happening, including the plan to hobble Nancy. She had it hard, and it's a great movie, but Tonya more so than anyone else in the movie, gets off easy.
