Jordan Belfort served prison time with Tommy Chong following his conviction. During their time as cell mates, Balfort told Chong a bunch of his stories, and Chong said he highly encouraged Belfort to sell his story - specifically because the true life was stranger than fiction.

He and I did community theater doing stage show and we even went to Westhill High School in Stamford, CT and did other shows such as Guys and Dolls (He was Sky Masterson, I was Brannigan) but we also did a production of Evita (He was Che, I was Juan Peron). He even emailed me about his time on the film, even going so far as mentioning me to legendary director Martin Scorsese and about how knowledgeable I am about film, a message that almost gave me a near fatal heart attack. 😅

37:06 If you notice Matthew was quite skinny during his cameo because he filmed this role during the period he was making 'The Dallas Buyers Club' the role that rightly won him his Oscar - beating Leonardo in fact. That role required him to lose 47 pounds and at this stage he'd only (!) lost around 30 so he was able to come in for a couple of days to film this part when Scorsese called him up. That's why it's only a small part. If you watch 'The Dallas Buyers Club' - and you REALLY should - you'll see why he lost the weight (47 pounds) for real. It's an awesome performance. BTW did you know the chest pump was something he does for real. Leo saw him doing it and suggested to Scorsese that they feature it.

So, the real Jordan Belfort has done many podcasts and discussed the events in the movie and 90% of it is real and actually under represented. The scene in Vegas was way worse than even the movie depicted. He wrote the original book while he was in jail and Tommy Chong was his cell mate. He has made an incredible journey turning his life around. He is completely sober and is actually great friends with the agent that arrested him. Jordan also has his own podcast and had the agent on for a 2 hour segment discussing his investigation and how he went about it. Fantastic story, the movie had an A list cast and director. One of my favorite films for many reasons but the fact that Jordan went thru all of that and turned his life around is just incredible.

That the event in the movie is true according to Jordan Belfort does not realy mean it all happened. He might have embellished the story in the book, might have left relevant stuff out, or just invented some part. It looks like the federal prosecutor that leads his case that in the book he "invented much", and that "he aggrandized his importance and reverence for him by others at his firm". He is today a motivational speaker, podcaster etc so it is in his interest to build and keep a public image of himself that might not be exactly match what really happened. He clearly did lie before to make money in an illegal way. Lying in a memoir is not illegal unless it would be some form of defamation, so it is a lot lower risk than what he did in the past So until it is collaborated by others I would be a bit skeptical of what Jordan Belfort says.

Great reaction Addie, like always. This movie stands as a testament to the storytelling power of cinema when it intersects with real-life events. Its basis in truth allows the audience to not only witness the extremes of human behavior but also to reflect on the broader implications and lessons that extend beyond the screen. And there are some fun facts about this movie, Jordan Belfort was inspired by Tommy Chong to write the book, of all the people to thank for the existence of The Wolf of Wall Street, actor and stoner icon Tommy Chong is the guy who ultimately made it happen. Chong served a jail sentence in the same Californian prison as Jordan Belfort and the two were cellmates. And according to Business Insider, Belfort told Chong stories from his career on Wall Street during their jail stay together and Chong encouraged him to collect those stories into a memoir- which became the basis for the movie. Before Martin Scorsese became interested in the project, in a interview a producer reported that Ridley Scott was interested in directing an adaptation of The Wolf of Wall Street with Brad Pitt playing Jordan Belfort. Leonardo DiCaprio had been desperate to play Jordan Belfort since reading his book, Jonah Hill took a pay cut for the opportunity to work with Martin Scorsese, On an episode of The Howard Stern Show, Jonah Hill says that he was so desperate to work with favorite director Martin Scorsece, also saying Goodfellas is his favorite movie and that he was willing to take a pay cut for the opportunity to work with him. One of the most iconic scenes in this movie sees Matthew McConaughey’s character thumping his chest and humming, which wasn't in the script. In fact, it’s McConaughey’s own scene preparation ritual and he does it before every take. And according to McConaughey, Leonardo DiCaprio suggested including it in the movie and Scorsese decided to throw it in. Since this was just the second week of filming, DiCaprio claims it set the tone for the rest of the shoot. Whenever one of the characters in the movie snorts cocaine- which is almost as frequent an occurrence in the movie as someone dropping an f-bomb, the actors are actually snorting crushed-up B vitamins, Jonah Hill revealed that he contracted bronchitis from inhaling so much and had to be hospitalized. Most of the dialogues in the movie was improvised, the scene in which Jordan tries to get home from the country club as the Quaaludes set in was entirely improvised on the day. It was DiCaprio’s idea for Jordan to open the car door with his foot, though that had to be the only take, since he sprained his foot doing it. And in that scene where a female employee of his firm has her head shaved in front of hundreds of men hooting like animals so she might get $10,000 for a boob job. I watched that scene thinking, "They didn't fake this. This woman was absolutely shaved." And i later found out that her name is Natasha Newman Thomas. She's a Los Angeles-based stylist, and this beautiful women gave up her locks solely for the cinema. Keep up the good work.

I'm laughing as I have it on pause and haven't watched it with you yet...good movie but I can imagine your reaction already to some scenes. I'm just going to hit play and watch madness ensue

You see the guy that introduces him at the end of the movie ? That's the real Jordan Belfort.

Movies are like books. You can pause them and put a bookmark in it and see the rest later if it's too long. 1 1/2 hours on one day and the other half the next.

That is a long movie to fit in under 40 minutes. I really enjoyed your reaction. I have read Jordan Belfort's books and I would say some of the details were not covered in detail. When I read the story I was blown away. The movie did not disappoint.

The rhythm and pacing of the movie is like a wild drug trip and the crash after.
