I took a break for about 2.5 months after getting surgery for severe carpal tunnel syndrome. I had reached the point I couldn't feel my middle/index fingers and was having trouble moving those fingers on my fretting hand. Coming back I started taking classical lessons from the LA guitar academy, learned to play a lot of awesome classical music, and addressed the issues in my technique (poor posture, applying way more pressure than was necessary, and generally playing with a lot of body tension). 10 days ago I picked up my PRS, fired up my go to amp/pedalboard, and sank my teeth into your lessons for Tornado of Souls and Symphony of Destruction. By applying the changes in technique I picked up from classical instruction and learning from your awesome videos, I am now shredding both of those solos, and the hand is feeling good! Thanks for all of your work Ben!!

Relationships are hard work, you get what you give out if them and you can't have sex with your guitars! well I guess you could but you probably wouldn't want to play them afterwards just say'n.

I agree..just took way too long of a break..I think a few days to reset it beneficial.. depends on where u are w your playing..in learning mode long breaks are bad..but if u are a pro player just doing your thing having a huge library of knowledge longer breaks don't penalize your playing so much

It is odd but I agree. When I have something almost down and I stop playing for a week or so, when I get back to playing all of a sudden it's there. Weird how your brain works sometimes.

I always worry about taking a break but then when I get back into it, I'm surprised nearly every time that I'm somehow a better player than I remembered or maybe even realized. Taking a break helps me be a better judge of my playing ability as I hear myself less critically. Just like Ben said, you forget to stress about some impossible technique and suddenly you try it without thinking about it and it's perfect every time. I bet Uncle Ben just realized his playing is more awesome than he remembered too.

100% and it applies to anything you try to learn. There is a point of diminishing return and you have to put it down for a few hours or a day. It's odd that when you pick it back up you somehow improved or made less mistakes. The mind is a beautiful but strange thing.

I record myself a lot while just playing and I usually over do it after awhile. I can go back and listen to myself to see where I need to improve and the longer I listen the worse I get after a couple hours. Put the guitar down and come back a couple hours later, play same stuff and somehow it sounds fine.

Being with out a home has considerably reduced my chops on guitar. No place to play, unless at an open mic. An then I'm like 20 years behind what I could do only 2 months ago. Love your playing good sir. Taking time away from music playing, when you return, it's like the rut is gone.. a new start, muscle memory, really comes out.

On the other hand a lot of things just stay with you. I have played some gojira maybe 10-15 years ago when I was still in high school. This week, I just turned on From Mars To Sirius and started playing along. Didn't sound great, but my fingers always knew where to go. That was a really strange feeling, because I couldn't remember it (before).

Great video 👍 For anyone who hasn't tried this , i can attest that it works 100% As an athlete that plays sports, ive always been incorporating these breaks in my practice and as a newbie to guitar, I noticed it works the same way. When a technique is challenging and I've hit a rutt where I'm repeating the same mistakes over and over again, I'll take a short break and do something else. I find that the repetitive mistakes are because of a mental block one develops exactly at the point you find difficult and are mistake prone. When you take a break and shift the practice focus to something else, you give your mind a chance to erase this block ( basically forgetting that you are supposed to make a mistake)

Dude, what a great video. This is great for people like me that frequently have to take extended breaks from playing due to life and, if I'm being honest, being over 40 and coming home exhausted every day, too tired to pick up the guitar and work out the kinks. I will be trying those exercises for sure! As for your song choices, I was shocked to find that we basically have the same song list with just a few differences. Holy Wars is generally the first song I play after stretching out a bit. Apart from the "Tour de Puppets" I have found Take No Prisoners to be a fantastic song for building up both the left and right hand. If I'm having some serious right hand issues I pull out the Slayer. Of course, almost everything on Reign in Blood is a good endurance builder, but Hallowed Point, Born of Fire, Hell Awaits, At Dawn They Sleep, Chemical Warfare, Dittohead, and War Ensemble have been in my right hand boot camp playlist for years. Thanks for giving your take on this subject. You've inspired me to go home and play this evening!!

i feel the same i get home tired from work and it can be hard to practice cause it takes mental energy, sometimes I play in the morning before work even just 30 minutes a day is enough to maintain your technique, then maybe another 30 minutes after work, then on the weekends you can do 2 or 3 or even 4 hours where you put in more work towards improving, that's what I usually do, but if I practice 3 hours on Saturday and Sunday, is spread out since I rarely go out, I'm at home all day lol

Gorgeous playing of course! While I rarely get a break from guitar (I teach 5/6 days a week), I will always say- make sure you've got a recording device capturing the moment you plug back into your rig- I always seem to be super inspired when this happens and I plug in again after a break. Can be a riff/lick explosion in those first few minutes.

cool video. I'm prone to obsessive behaviour so forcing myself to take breaks is really essential to avoid burnout. It's really important to get out of the mindset that if you don't play for a month your brain will delete all your muscle memory, otherwise guitar and music becomes something that traps you instead of enriching your life. I was watching a Larry Carlton video the other day where he said that after a tour he will put the guitar away for sometimes as long as 3 months, seems to work for him!

Alternate picking has always been an Achilles heal of mine, to the point where I just don't bother anymore! On a different topic entirely I would love it if you could do some videos on how to improve song memorisation, although perhaps you're the wrong person to ask as you're so good at it!

I spent last February in Cozumel escaping the winter chill with no guitar for almost five weeks. You're right, Mexico is awesome. The worst part about missing my guitar was coming home with no calluses left and I had a gig in a week! Ouch! But no way am I checking my Martin into an airplane cargo hold and risk either damage or all together missing, depending on the country you're heading to!

Sometimes i take a break and im actually better. I think because we can step back with a different aproach. Sounds like you still got the mojo, though I noticed you were getting way better as you played during this video. Welcome back!

Breaks are good to make you appreciate the instrument a little more. I had an unfortunate break about 7 years ago when I was in the hospital for 32 days. It was a little rough when I picked it back up when I got out. The meds they had me on messed with my nerve system and it was hard to get past that. I had a gig 2 weeks after I got out and it took the two weeks to get my chops back within reason. Fast forward two weeks later, the gig went good for the most part, the other guitar player I jam with was like "Wow, it's like you never left ". The endurance part was the hardest thing about the show, I played in a cover band and it was like 40 songs, ouch. But all has been better since then and I might take a break for a week once in a while now. The biggest thing is to play relaxed if possible, like you said Ben. Probably the best advice to any guitar player out there that plays a lot. Great video!

Thanks , this type of stuff really helps. Interesting to see that the exact same issues arise when I slack off. Pick jumping and the high E stuff. ( although I never function on the scale you do)

I recently took a month off of playing, I came back refreshed and ideas were pouring out of me, I thought it would hurt my playing, but it was a great thing for me personally..

This is a hard one. 10 years. My dad died from brain cancer back in 2012 and he was also a player. An absolute blues master that opened for Mountain and BB King with his old band and watching his decline broke me mentally. I’ve been itching to get back at it and, well…here I am. 😊

I’ve always found taking a break helps. If I go on vacation for a week or two I come back with something new all the time. Different style, different picking, different melodies etc. It’s like your brain and muscles have time to figure out all that practice. Great way to get out of a rut!

I think it would be great if you did a video on Gary Richrath’s style of playing. I love the way he could make a guitar sound like it’s “taking a deep breath”, you know, how he would rake the strings open, and then hit all the right notes. Gary Moore did kinda the same thing. Love your videos. Thanks man

I find it swings the other way too- if i play every day, i feel like my playing is spread out too thin. i make a point to take a day off every few days. Also that PRS sounds awesome

My wife bought me one of those Traveler guitars so I can maintain my chops when we go on vacations. It has a piezo system so it can be plugged in if you need to. Maybe something to look into.

It was interesting to hear you say you get that V shape to your Picking. I have that problem. Learned about it from the Troy Grady channel. I've been working alot on a better picking technique. Nice to see your Mortal to. 🙂👍

I've stopped guitar for about 3 years straight, working on farms and being almost always in the woods otherwise. Now I'm back at it since 2019 and it feels good! 🤘
