Not surprised. Many Bangladeshis look like mixed with all sorts of things. Its not always easy to pinpoint their origins because of that. Bangladesh was a very prosperous place during the medieval times (in fact, the richest place in the world), and it attracted lot of people from the Muslim world. Not to mention the almost 6 centuries of Turkic rule at the time.

Very few Sudanese people have that much admixture in them, or like the few Arab tribes there, but most of us are just a mix of East and North African. I definitely look and am African. :) I think it's just a coincidence that I sort of look Indian, because no one else in my family gets mistaken for it.. When I can afford a freaking DNA test then we can discuss this. 😂

Desi Boy Idk I live in Saudi Arabia, sometimes I get called names by some Saudis because they think I'm Pakistani,(terrible and sad ofc) and then other times my Saudi classmates tell me they thought I was a Saudi all year long. I just like to simplify things and say that I am Black and Arab only in the sense that it's my mother tongue and culture. What you're saying is interesting but I just do not see the 60% Eurasian in the mirror, so I won't believe it 'til I do a dna test myself. 😂 Thanks though, it's nothing personal, I just never believe what people tell me unless I see it with my own eyes. Most DNA tests anyways just tell Sudanese people they're East and North African, but you're delving deeper into what North African can be considered to be. In my eyes I look 100% Sudanese and that's all that matters until a dna test comes. 💔😂 (self aware of my delusion)

Bengalis are predominantly a 'new' race - we can't be exactly 100% Bengali as we are comprised of a mixture of ethnicities that have previously infiltrated our homeland (British Empire, Arabs, Moguls etc) as well as our previous association with Indians and Pakistanis.
@freekashmir2567 жыл бұрын
Bengalis have nothing to do with Brits or Arabs or Pakistanis. They're north east Indic people, so they are a mix of indian and south east asian.

Haajar The small number of babies concieved by rape would have no effect on the genotype of the average Bangladeshi or Indian Bengali. Bengalis have their own genotype which has been largely unchanged as they are predecessors to ancient Dravidian/Indo-Aryan kingdoms. Unlike other parts of India like Gujarat and Hyderabad, there was not mass migration of Arab and Persian Muslims either. The chance of a Bangladeshi having European or Pakistani ancestry is miniscule.

@berhoom20246 жыл бұрын
Desi Boy Dravidian doesn't mean we spoke it. North Indian languages have a few Dravidian elements / loan words etc. The Aryan language proves Aryan origin of the people, who assimilated with Dravidian and Mongoloid peoples. Hungarians, Finns and Basques don't speak Indo-European languages but are Indo-European.

I have seen DNA results of a few Bangladeshis. Two of them scored significant Caucasian/Iranian in their results and another scored substantial Arab, specifically pointing out Yemen. All three are Sylheti. Considering Sylhet and Bangladesh was under Turkic rule (they were Central Asian Turkic people with some Persian, and East European heritage from the Caucuses) for several centuries during the late Medieval period, it would make sense that some Sylhetis and Bangladeshis will have this. Sylhet was also known to have a significant settlement from the Yemen in the early 1300s, who came with Shah Jalal.
@NisCho7545 жыл бұрын
Rahim Rahim sounds interesting, I’m Sylheti myself and my nani’s side had ancestors who were from Yemen
@RahimRahim-ic9iw5 жыл бұрын
Possibly. I have seen some Sylhetis who show substantial Arab influence on their looks. But I think the biggest foreign influence in Bangladesh was Turkic (but there was a significant Arab influx as well who came during the Turkic Sultanate, aside from Shah Jalal). This also explains why many Bangladeshis, particularly Sylhet, have Turkic names like Begum, Khatun, Khanum, Sultana. Turkic influence in Bangladesh through Bakhtier Khalji’s invasion, then the Bengal Sultanate and, lastly, the Mughals, left an indelible mark on the country.
@NisCho7545 жыл бұрын
Rahim Rahim I don’t know how reliable these DNA-tests actually are but I would love to send in mine as well to see if I have any Yemeni “blood” as we claim to have. And yes you’re right about the feature, my nani and her family looks legit like Arabs. I personally think that’s an easy way to differentiate between Sylhetis and the rest of Bangladeshis, we tend to have other facial structures. And people from Ctg have looks that resembles people from Burma even tho they had more trading with Arabs since it’s a port city, but I guess the border with Burma is the reason. Btw have you heard of Prithimpasha Nawab family from Kulaura Moulvibazar? Apparently their ancestors were Iranians and they’ve ties with the Mughal families and nawabs of Bengal. If you don’t mind where in Sylhet are your family from?
@RahimRahim-ic9iw5 жыл бұрын
If you do do the test do not mention your ethnicity when handing in the sample. I have a feeling they just give a standard response based on the ethnicity you tell them you are but vary it slightly from person to person. I have noticed a lot of the Bangladeshis are getting the same results irrespective of how they look. I know phenotype and genotype does not always correlate but you would think there would be some variation. For example, there was one girl who looks very Iranian (routinely gets mistaken for one as well) but her results were the standard results the Bangladeshis are getting. Also, have you noticed how Bengali Brahmins get very little East Asian and substantial Northern East Europe (which is related to the supposed Indo-Aryan migrations into South Asia), but based on looks, many Sylhetis look far more West Asian influenced than the Brahmins of West Bengal, who nearly always look standard Indian. Sometimes Eastern Indian and sometimes Northern Indian, but occasionally with a bit of Southeast Asian influence as well. Yet, the DNA generally paints them to be more Western (albeit Indo-Aryan as opposed to West Asian).
@NisCho7545 жыл бұрын
Rahim Rahim Thanks for the advice, sounds logical because just like you’re saying many Bangladeshi are getting very similar results. Now the question is if it’s worth it considering the price, I heard someone say it’s around 100 pounds (approximately 1000 crones, I live in Sweden) but have to check it up and do my own research...

@rtrail78625 жыл бұрын
@@inspiringme145 Without meaning any disrespect at all, I wish you had made it clear that you were half Afghan. We are really seeking to collect a database of Bangladeshis that are full Bangladeshi. If someone is half or quarter something else, then it renders it meaningless, because the subject is not pure Bangladeshi. Like I say, there is no consistency in the categorisation with these various companies. Central Asia on MyHeritage, for example, is very different to the Central Asian on 23andme. Believe it or not, the 23andme "Central Asian" even includes South Asia, which, in my opinion, is completely lacking common sense. Central Asia should be the modern Turkic populations of Central Asia, so therefore should only include countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgystan, and perhaps also the Uyghur peoples of China since they are also Turkic. Yes, there were small settlements of Arabs (mostly Yemeni and Iraqi, but some others were Turks and Persians) in Sylhet who came with Shah Jalal (he was believed to be an Arab but came over from Konya, Turkey, so was most likely part of the Turkic empire) in the early 14th Century (although Arabs did have trading posts in Bangladesh from as early as the 8th Century), but more likely, any foreign influence in Bangladesh from the time of Islamic rule between 1204 and the late 1700s, would be people who were Persianite-Turks (Turkic peoples who were culturally Persian) who originally came from places like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, etc but were settled in Afghanistan before they came over, and also some Afghans themselves.

Nasima Begum If I am not wrong from historical times the land of the Ganges(Bangladesh) has attracted people from all parts of the world.(Around 2000 B.C) The original people of Bangladesh were Mongoloids( With features like the chinese and some of the Bengali tribes today like the Chakma can still claim to be so.) and Dravidians( Basically dark skinned people, who can be traced all the way back to Africa). In later stages of the Millenia ( Still B.C) ligher skinned Aryans ( People from present day Northern Indian and Pakistan) started migrating down the Ganges and towards present day Bangladesh. All these people integreted and created our great language and culture. But this was not all.
@omarfarique63047 жыл бұрын
Nasima Begum Starting in the 8th century Arab and Persian traders started settling in Bangldesh especially in the south( The port city of Chittagong Esp.). This continued until the Turkish invasion in the 11th century.These maurading adventurers came from somewhere in present day Uzbekistan ( Central Asia). But the beauty and abundance of natural wealth attracted even more people. In the late 16th century the Mughals invaded Bengal. So you see we Bengalis are an absolute mixed race, banglai jake bole "Joga Khichuri". And that is why the Pakistanis thought us to be racially inferior,"The non-martial" race. But according to modern Anthropology, homogeneity can only be preserved with the mixing of races. Many also beleive that belonging to multitudes of races, explains our higher intelligence.( Fact thats yet to be proven).

I am a Sylheti Bramhin,my ancestors hailed from dhaka dakkhin,sylhet,I ponder sometimes what would be my ancestry?
@islamislam-zw3il6 жыл бұрын
Somnath Bhattacharjee well, let me break down your ethnicity, piece by piece : Being a Brahmin, you will trace your ascendancy to upper Gange's plateau ( Modern day U.P. ). Every' Brahmin ' will have some trace region ( in his ancestry ) of U.p. state . does not matter whether you are an Iyer Brahmin, belonging to a predominantly Dravidian family or a Kashmir Muslim convert. It 's like the homeland of all Jewish ethnic groups ( Jerusalem). Regardless of whether your Brahmin family has out - married or not, you will have this peculiar " u.p." ancestry in you. Secondly, "Brahmins" are not a homogeneous ethnic group ( I.e. like the Europeans, or even Africans ). During the early Vedic period, The 'priestly class ' was made up of a plethora of sub-ethnic groups/ clans/communities or even races! The authentic Brahmins were, of course, Indo - Iranians, who hailed from Modern day Turkmenistan (not the Caucasus mountains, neighbouring the Iberian peninsula). Hence, no traces of European ancestry can be ascertained from any of the " upper - caste "DNA. These " Brahmins", over the course of few centuries, bonded with other Brahmin communities, and established the "infamous social stratification " of India - The Varna vyavastha ( Not caste system; taxonomy comes from Portuguese traders who coerced and proselytised Hindus in Goa; Goud Saraswat Brahmins of Goa). After the close of the Vedic age, and somewhere at the dawn of the Gupta empire, Fissures began to manifest themselves in this fourfold social hierarchy. Brahmins, like countless communities before them, were not immune to schisms, infighting, theological differences and power struggles. This culminated in intensity, and distinct Brahmin communities sprouted up, with distinct theological beliefs, diverse rulings on ritual purity and other collateral observances. Henceforth, surnames come into play. Consequently, you have the emergence- of- previously -unheard Brahmin communities( like Kulin Brahmins, golppurab Brahmin , guar , adi - guar , iyengar , lyer, deshastha, Nepali, karhade). Also , a few centuries down the road, these schisms will be demarcated along geographical lines ( panch gauda vs panch Dravida ; whereby " Dravida " alludes to "land of Dravidians /Elamites / Canaanite migrants from Pedrosa ( modern day Iraq ) " and "gauda " insinuates to modern day Punjab, nestled on the banks of Saraswati river . In a nutshell, Brahmin DNA would be any of these combinations : . South Indian ( Dravidian or Tamil or Australoid or Dalit ) +iranian neolithic admixture ( remnants of Indus valley or Harrapan people ) + Balochi ( Persian or Indo - Aryan admixture ) + Northwest European ( steppe or eastern European ancestry ) + caucasian (proto - Slavic and Siberian tribal group ancestry ) + broadly east Asian admixture ( perhaps , higher in your case , due to your Bengali or Assamese ethnicity ) . owing to centennial( centuries of ) intermixing, The Brahmin component has been diluted in many communities. To a large extent, in Brahmin communities dwelling or residing near Maharashtra or off the Deccan plateau.Due to a relatively less stringent influence of caste system over there and a higher probability of Exogamy ) . p.s..: NEVERTHELESS, YOU ARE STILL A BRAHMIN :-))))))😋😋😋😋😋😋😊😊😊😊

If anyone does a DNA test, do not fill in a questionnaire (or at least use false information).And do not use your real name. You don't want to clue them in (the testing companies) of your ethnic background. This severly prejudices the results they send back.

I was reading history of Islam in Bengal where they had written that Bengali Muslims came to region mostly from Persian region and settled there because of fertile land of region and the conversions were not the medium for spread of Islam in Bengal. So I expected you would had some middle eastern ancestry. Probably the history written is false.

@rpointstr49984 жыл бұрын
Interesting that you scored so much South Asian but show very little INDID features. Have you considered doing a test with MyHeritage. If you do, use a fake identity when filling in the form and use an email address that does not contain your real name. And pay for the test so they won't be able to identify you. But not sure how you can do that. You don't want to identify your ethnic background to them prior to the testing.

Bengali is an ethnic group. Indian is a nationality, with lot's of different ethnic groups. The only Bengalis that are indians are the ones that are in west bengal, as it is a part of India. Bengalis that are from Bangladesh are Bangladeshi bengalis, a whole seperate country.
@adilshah78446 жыл бұрын
That is a dumb comment. If one is born a Bengali, one cannot change it. It is ethnicity and 'Indian' is a nationality.
@wanderingwonderer54425 жыл бұрын
Ayan Maity There was no India until 1947. Republic of India only came to existence in 1947. Before that it was British India, and before that the Mughal empire. India has always been made up of a multitude of peoples, languages and cultures that were once different nations. Bengalis have never been 'Indians'. They are and have always been a separate nation. In 1947 some Hindu Bengalis chose to be a part of the Republic of India. Most chose to be a part of what is now independent Bangladesh.
