She ACTS a little upset, (pacing back and forth in this video when she got one wrong) sometimes- just part of her schtick. The thing with Elise is that her facial expression is ALWAYS blank- she's a little like a talking mannequin - she knows its funny in a sort of original, off-beat way.

My favourite song of yours was from way back in the day with that one about class presentations. I sent it to my favourite professor (I was still in university at the time) and told him that I am somehow ALL of the kids in that room at the same time. Go re-watch your own work, eh? It's funny. And you don't go off-pitch in that one. I don't think tests like these really count all that much: the question is whether you can tell that two notes are different at all.

Those last questions assume you’ve had formal ear training (practical music theory) OR perfect pitch. As long as you are not *actually* tone deaf, your pitch acuity can be trained. There was a guy in my high school band who would literally play like a seventh off when we asked him to match pitch and he was literally incapable of hearing how far out he was.
@JensGulin5 ай бұрын
Not really, relative pitch only and short term memory. Knowing scales help, but you don't need to if you can match the numbers shown during "listen only" with the tones played back later. With music theory you would certainly be familiar with the 1-5 interval from start, but there's no requirement really. The biggest problem for a beginner is likely to even understand the questions, but I'd say that's the same from start in that case. The concept of "going up" or "higher" was never explained in the video. I don't consider it music theory, but not sure how much training a "normal" or a "tone deaf" person needs to interpret them. Elise definitely knew all these concepts and seemed able to hear the tones fine.
@nicknibs65545 ай бұрын
@@JensGulin you're not wrong, but that's not the entirety of it. When I first did interval tests, I would always be off. After a little practice, I was always on it, even if I had to take a minute to rehear and work it out. Unfamiliar things are unfamiliar. Innate ability doesn't mean innate skill. With about 1 hour of practice, she would likely get 100% on a similar test.
@JensGulin5 ай бұрын
@@nicknibs6554 sure, training is a good way to get better! I didn't really intend to argue, just triggered by words like "perfect pitch, formal training, music theory". Those are great, but this test didn't seem to require any of them. Keep learning!

I have perfect pitch, so when the first question played A and B, I thought those were note names, so I was like, "Wait, those notes aren't the notes A and B"!!! 😂 (They're actually F# and A, respectively.) And, to be fair, that last part with the scale degrees is advanced, and even students in Music Theory courses in college would have trouble with that, at least initially.
@dannykent61905 ай бұрын
If you're looking to recognize the relative pitch immediately, then I agree it's advanced... but you can literally just sing the scale here until you find the right note. You might be making it more complicated than you need to.

Definitely not tone deaf. You got the first two wrong but quickly figured it out and you would get them all right if you tried again. The next part is more like an ear training exercise. The questions you got wrong were still pretty good guesses and you developed good strategies to do it (when you sang the root note of the scale a couple times to familirize yourself with the key). This test reminded me of stuff i had to do in college ear training courses, you could definitely hang with all that stuff. Great ear!
