In fall of 2023 I took the "Finding Your Vision" workshop with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb in Saint Malo, France.
In this video we'll look at my work from the workshop, and talk about how I edited and sequenced it with feedback from Alex and Rebecca.
I'll even tell you how I cheated (it's underwhelming).
Apologies for the jumpy autofocus, I experimented with a different setup this time.

Thanks for posting, I found this interesting but the impression I got is that they sequence pretty much the same way many other people do, by looking for some kind of affinity between the images either formally or on the level of subject matter, trying to force some kind of continuity. As for your selection for the final image, you mentioned that it has a peaceful sense to it, it is also a higher angle. One of the aesthetic conventions of narrative films is to end on a crane up, huge numbers of films end that way so ending on a higher angle still is in keeping with that convention.

Thanks for watching and commenting! I didn't even realize I was using a film convention by ending my sequence that way, thanks for pointing that out - I'm going to really be paying attention for that when I watch movies from now on!

this is super interesting, especially as someone who knows nothing about sequencing. i also liked looking at your photos as so far i had only seen black and white film photos of yours ! my grandparents live in a city near saint-malo, so it was also nice to see photos from a city i know a bit. thank you, looking forward to seeing more

Wow! Small world! Thank you Aliya, I’m really happy you found it interesting. I didn’t know much about sequencing either before taking the class, so I’m very much a novice with it still. Will definitely touch on that further in the next vid.

Thanks for posting this. I'd love to have taken the course myself. It's great being able to learn a bit about your experience.

Thanks so much for watching and commenting Chad! Don’t miss the next one - it’s going to be specifically about my main takeaways from the class. Also - there will be more opportunities for you to take it - they offer it several times a year in different locations.

You have a pretty good eye for street/documentary photography, sorry but you do not need to attend workshops... spend that money on travels ...

Thank you so much!! I live in a state of permanent travel, without a mortgage or regular rent payment - which luckily allows for a little of both. I’m excited to be headed to Chile in September for a workshop with Tomas Munita!

Curious as to why you chose the asian lady to put in your thumbnail, without including her partner who was right next to her. Very strange...

I mean, was she aware you would put a close up of her face next to the words "I cheated"?

I did it because I have heard that including faces prominently in the thumbnail is good practice, and I have heard or read somewhere that attractive women even more so. Being new at this and attempting to gain some traction, I will try any advantage I can. The photo is also one of my favorites from the workshop. I hear YT is rolling out A/B testing for thumbnails - something I will try as soon as I can figure out how to do it.

@@johntrin Honestly, I didn't perceive the thumbnail this way. Saw the image and knew it was probably an image he took after reading the title. I guess I didn't think of it the way you implied as a lot of my youtube recommended is photography related.

Virtue signal much?

@@Caballeroshot when you take a workshop with someone of Alex Webb's stature, you expect a more ethical approach than "I'm gonna put suggestive text next to a girl's face without her consent because I'm new to youtube and need to do all I can to get ahead".
