Also camping out in the open in a tent til even later with friends in the smokey mountains during and after college. Took a family trip to the worlds fair in seattle some years ago, 10 aunts/uncles/cousins,,camping every day for two weeks, yellowstone first, then the fair, down the west coast, disney land, grand canyon then home to alabama...lotsa fun

Despite the ignorant comment below, Scouting was a positive influence in my life. I grew up in the 70's in middle America and never heard of the things coming out today about the Scouts. Those hikes: loved the first half hour and the last 10 minutes of our 20 mile hikes. However, I ended up hiking and backpacking for years afterwards in many different terrains. It's how my wife and I learned we were compatible together.

I'd have loved to see the "British teenager" narrated version of this (knowing what I was like as a teen - getting positive comments from a Brit-teen lad is akin to drawing blood from a stone). For non-Brits, when a British teen lad says "it was alright" it translates to "that was seriously cool". 😆. Oh - that phase ends when they reach late 20's to mid 30's or so.

@mezanian Some people choose to drive 2 minutes to the bottom of the mountain and 1 hour to the grocery store. Others choose to drive 2 minutes to the grocery store and 1 hour to the bottom of the mountain. To say I or anyone who lives in a city doesn't get outdoors, don’t understand what it's like, we don't know what we are missing is extremely ignorant. I know exactly what I am missing and exactly what I wouldn’t have if I lived in a rural area. To say that I have to try to live vicariously through a KZbin because I live in the city shows more ignorance. I enjoy the cinematic quality and the story telling on a topic that I enjoy myself. What does it say about someone who watches this video and has access to such things right outside their backyard? I have probably had more outdoor adventures, training, and education as well as working as an outdoor educator living in urban areas my entire life, then a lot of people who live in rural areas. When I can walk to my local nature preserve and go on a hike. shows how ignorant people are to what locations have to offer. And my neighbor's house is 10 feet from mine. Location doesn't necessarily mean a lack of access. It might make access more difficult. I like my city water and know I can drink what comes out of my tap. I like my city sewers and know that I don’t have to maintain a septic. I like the paved roads in front of my house and almost everywhere I need to travel on the daily. I like doing a whole day's worth of errands and putting less than 10 miles on my vehicle. I like knowing that the local hospital is a 2 minute drive from my house and not a 30-minute ambulance ride. I also like to sit out on my back deck with a view of a city retention pond and watch the water foul. There's a reason why most of the worlds population lives in cities. Just saying. If you enjoy your rural lifestyle good for you. It wouldn't exist if the cities all moved out to rual areas. As for dysfunctional children, yet another thing that the city offers is at least where I live. Excellent public schools. Rural areas rate pretty poor in the education levels.

I'm 77 years old. I served 21 years in the Marine Corps as an infantry officer with 3 years in combat and I retired in 1989. After that, I spent 10 years in two corporations supporting the US Special Operations Command, MacDill AFB, Tampa, Florida. In 2000 I became an independent consultant for Department of Defense high technology programs developing new technologies for special forces, US Tier 1 forces, the Army, and the Navy. I was not only an independent consultant paid by the hour that I was required, but I also was responsible for teaching the new technologies to military units as well as providing technical support for those new technologies to military exercises across the US and around the world many times over. My dad was an Air Force B-47 and B-52 pilot during the Cold War and so we moved around the US every 1-3 years. In other words, I had the opportunity to live in many different cultures and school systems across the US. Maintaining a C average was extremely difficult because every school in every state was different. Also because the strategic bomber bases were purposefully located as far away as possible from local towns and cities, it was always a very long ride on the military or civilian buses from the base to schools. That meant that base kids had all most no opportunity to get to know the town kids or have any social interaction to them. In most bases we were stationed it was at least 45 minutes to an hour or more bus ride to school and then back to the base. There were no realistic opportunities to date any of the local girls. In those days (the 1950's and 1960's) the bomber bases were located in the middle of nowhere so that in case of a nuclear strike by the USSR, the base was expendable and the town/city was hopefully spared most of the destruction. As a family living on strategic bomber bases growing up, we all knew that if the alert sounded for the B-47's or B-52's on alert status, the alert crews would be airborne in about 1 minutes and would be out of the effect of a nuclear detonation, but everyone left on base would be dead. It was not possible for us to get into a car and drive far enough to avoid being killed and so it didn't matter if we were killed on base or off base the outcome would be the same. For example, in 1962, we were stationed at Homestead AFB south of Miami, Florida. It was a B-52 base and so, duh, there were a lot of B-52 bombers there. In October of 1962 the Cuban Missile Crisis began. Tensions were very high and it looked like there may be a nuclear war between Russia and the US and perhaps Cuba might have started it by launching the intermediate range nuclear missiles that Russia had given them. I was just a kid in high school at the time. One night our phone rang and my dad answered it. He hung up, got his flight gear, told us he loved us, and left. The next morning all of the B-52's were gone and in their place was an unleavable number of fighter aircraft. We had no idea where my dad and the B-52's had gone nor did we have any contact with him. One night later, I was going to the high school football game at night when the car our chaperon was driving came to a railroad crossing. There was freight train that was hauling Army military equipment to Homestead AFB. It was endless and there was another endless train after that. We missed the game and went home. In the morning, Homestead AFB looked like a massive Army camp with countless tanks, vehicles, tents, soldiers, etc. It was amazing. But knowing that strategic bomber bases were nuclear targets, I didn't understand why the Army would stage all of their soldiers and equipment on a base that would be a nuclear target. Today it may seem strange to some, but in those days it was the reality. Air Force personnel and families on strategic bomber bases and near Minuteman missile silos knew that in the event of a nuclear war, we were expendable--not in a malicious way, but just in the world of reality. The US military would have no more that 15, 20 minute notice of a nuclear strike. By the time it might get down to the family level, we would have perhaps 10-7 minutes notice--not enough to get the family in the car and be able to drive out of the range of the blast. Even as a kid in elementary school, I was well aware of that and so the "duck and cover" exercises we occasionally had in school seemed ridicules to me. Duck and cover to me only meant that there would be tons of concrete piled on us. As a kid, I didn't always understand what my dad said bout his job. He almost never talked about it. But there one very rare moment in 1960 for some reason he talked about "dry alerts" for the B-47 bombers at Homestead at the time. I don't remember why the conversation but I do remember him being in a strange mood talking to my mom about some B-47 crews being--- I don'' have enough energy to finish. Sorry.

So many brilliant nuances in this adventure with your bro… (bear tip below) - “don’t like walnuts man!" - "the memories you end up making are a little bit more vibrant when there’s other people around. Maybe they’re more real?” - “any bears at night” “yea, maybe four or five” “really” “I mean I was a silent killer.” - “I got my sausage, stick, tortilla warp, and fire… it’s gonna be BLESS!” - “we have curry powder, because Eva doesn’t have salt & pepper” ”priorities" - “I wrestled a bear, gotta eat like one” Speaking of, that felled tree at your campsite was practically a red carpet to a bear’s dinner. Good thing you didn’t have a bear in camp that night, because you wouldn’t have breakfast or that bag! Next time, tie the end of your rope to a rock and chuck it over a high branch, then hoist the bag up and tie the rope to the highest branch you can reach. - "alright, so Kilimanjaro next year?” "Everest" - ends with Eva’s beautiful laugh As always, brilliant storytelling in your edits.

I like this video better than any. As a 78-year old, my days of backpacking like that in Washington and Idaho, the camp sites look very similar. As a young guy age 30 to 60, I had no fear of bears. I took a handgun but really if you are sleeping in a flimsy tent, the bear could maul you before you could get a gun ready. I was just nervy in those days. Eva, you amaze me how Tom wears shoes around the campfire and you go barefooted and how you seem to wear a sweat shirt of some kind but yet are in shorts, and I always found that nights in high country were chilly. I live in the woods but only at 2600 feet elevation, and a ways away from wild country so I enjoy walking on the forest trails I have made, but I am so grateful to you for your videos that bring back so many memories. In my days of hiking, I didn't even have a GPS. I used wilderness modified topo maps that would disintegrate as the hikes wore on. As I got older, the ground got harder and I needed better mattresses. No tech in the 70's 80's and even 90's. Few pictures taken due to bad weather and no moving pictures taken. Keep all those videos and enjoy your experiences now, because one day, like all of us older hikers watching your videos, you will wake up one morning after a hard hike, and realize that your adventures are nearing their end. But there will be more hiker/campers out there like you who will bring back memories for you. Thank you again!

Hello Eva, I've never actually written anyone before but this video hit home a little with me. Like you were trying to inspire your brother to be more adventurous, I just wanted you to know you have inspired me and literally have changed my life. I love to travel but I'm absolutely terrified of heights. I can bang my chest and tell my self be a man) nothing works. So I've stuck to the USA and I've been to 40 states so far but always just to the biggest cities. But after watching some Ryan Van Duzer bike packing videos I started with my interest in adventure. Then right after about 6 months ago I stumbled across your videos I haven't seen all of them or anything but I've been an avid watcher since finding your channel. And I don't know what it was about you, I think it's your insight. The way you talk about life and facing your fears and your tone the way you say things you can tell your being sincere. Even your slogan just all hit home with me. Just this summer I spent time in Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. Jackson Wyoming is my favorite little town in America. I use to avoid mountains as much as possible now I can't get enough. I've climbed two beginner mountains, I did a ski gondola to over 10,000 ft elevation starting at like 7100. I went white water rafting and on some cool hikes and wild camped in the heart of the Teton wilderness were you wouldn't dare walk without bear spray. I know those things are no big deal to someone like you but for me it is and it's just the start. I feel it my bones I'm a not new but just a different person. I love adventure and if it wasn't for the way you talk about it and some of the things you've done especially being a woman and by yourself, I never would of started on this new journey. I've now built up the courage to do want I really want to do visit Europe and China before now I would of never got on a plane. Thank you for real, I sincerely appreciate you and what you do for people. I study great people from athletes to business people and your mind is just as incredible as any of them and besides that your prettier than all of them) Take care and good luck. Vilk is that dude!! P.S. Do ever plan on continuing your journey on the Pan-American Highway?

My two teens (13 and 15 now) love to hike. We've always done walks here in the Netherlands and short day walk when camping (mostly France and Denmark), but two year ago we took them to the Pyrenees and took longer hikes on the French and Spanish side and they absolutely loved it. This year we went to England and the hikes in the Peak District and Dorset were the highlights for them. It is so great to see them really enjoying and appreciating the outdoors. I can see both of them takin on longer hikes with overnight camping once they are a bit older.

Loved this one! I remember taking my son hiking and camping for the first time. He was around 10. He wasn’t a happy camper, but with time the hikes got easier and so did the camping. Now he’s 22 and looks forward to our yearly hike and camping trip. 🏕️ ❤

@_officialEvazuBeck_ sure. At times my son gets busy with work, but we try to find the time to get together and go hiking and camping. Mainly we stay in Texas. We get away from technology and follow the trail. I’ll take my cellphone, but it’s only for emergencies. Last year we went to Enchanted Rock here in Texas. I was born and grew up in Texas and never knew about it. It was a nice little hike.

One of the best things I did in life was getting my kids into the outdoors. Our best adventures started in the Dubois area of the Wind River. In my younger days, did a 2 week loop in the Windrivers started at Elkhart Park also near Pinedale. Made it all the way to Titcomb basin. At the lakes there the base of the tallest peak in Wyoming. It snowed in late July there, about 6 inches the beginning of our two 20ish guy trip. Lots of great fishing at Island lake near the tree line. Caried about 70 lb pack.

One of my favorite backpacking trips started from that parking area when we headed out for seven days to Jackass Pass, the Cirque, Lizard Pass, Grave Lake and Hailey Pass. It is, by far, one of my most favorite places to hike and backpack. Grizzlies are on the fringes of the WRR so not usually a risk but that bear bag was definitely easy for a black bear to get to. Because we travelled and camped and road-tripped a lot my dogs (both working border collies), like Vilk, see home as me and not a place which is why they've always been comfortable camping without issue. I love that you find my home state so awesome...it really is amazing and I miss it terribly

What a delightful video! First one for me on your channel. I've had the privilege of taking many 'noob" hikers on their first trip over the last 50 years, Including my wife on our honeymoon 40+ years ago! A couple things I learned - leave them wanting more! 1) plan it shorter and easier than you think they need 2) gives them much more time in camp mode than walking mode. This is a whole new world. It took me years to really adjust to it. Now, it's second nature. If the trip is short and comfortable for them, they will eventually want to go for a longer one. I still hear from friends that took their first BP trip decades ago, and they fondly remember it still. Great vid! Thanks!

This trail was also my first backpacking experience as a 14 year-old 51 years ago. 50 miles and I LOVED it - backpacking has been a hobby since. I just went back to that same trail last year for the 50th anniversary trip. Photographer's Point NEVER gets old. Titcomb Basin is great as well - too bad you couldn't take a few more days for a longer trip. 50 years ago , we never saw a single person - last year I estimate that I encountered about 40 people on the first day (some were day hikers). By The Way - approved bear canisters are required in Bridger National Forest. I haven't encountered bears on this trail, but I talked to others who did just within hours of my passing the location of their sightings. A bear (and rodents, too) can MUCH more easily access your hang than you did.
