Have you ever brought your bike on a train in Germany? I have. From Berlin to Friedrichshafen at Lake Constance in the south of Germany. My first endeavor did not go as smoothly as I had hoped for - but it all worked out in the end. Turns out that bringing a bike halfway through Germany on the train is not as complicated as I thought. Just a bit annoying, Thanks, Deutsche Bahn 😜

I'm from the US. I think YT recommended this video because I watched your Giant Revolt video - I'm getting one soon. This video reminds me of my days of traveling from Frankfort to Nuremberg, Munich, and Bretten. It's always in late January or early February. The scene outside of ICE' window is so familiar but so far away. Thanks for the video.

This is a great thought process. Whatever happens, happens. It's an adventure! I think the same way. Your experience taking bike to train was very similar with my first experience here in America with Amtrak train. We we have the same bikepacking Apidura setup, love it. Thanks for the video 👍🙂

Deutsche Bahn rocks! I spent 1996-98 bike & training, mostly around Stuttgart. But you should not feel embarrassed when you did what you were suppose to do. I liked how you hooked up your cam to act as security cam. I lost a cheap camera off my bicycle to a thief near Köln once, but I locked the bicycle so it could have been worse. Being able to take the train home meant I could ride twice as far away on my weekend rides. Chicago is now good for bicycle on trains. If you ever come here do so in the May-June or September-October for the best chance at great weather. Riding into Stuttgart via Bad Cannstatt and thru the Staatgarten and next to the Nekar River to the Untertürkheim S-Bahn was always a thrill no matter how many times I did it.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, James! I'm sure I will be traveling a lot more often with Deutsche Bahn and my bike this summer. Also for short weekend getaways! But yes, always trying to be aware of thieves. I expect them to literally take anything at that point! Wish you safe rides!

Well, taking a bike on a train in Germany works in most cases, just not always. It works, but it’s not reliable. I wouldn’t risk it for a short trip, but it’s fine for a 2-3 weeks bicycle ride if You plan to get home at least one day earlier than the last day of your vacation.

Once had a bike in a train Germany, no problem, but the second time never came as the bike was stolen before it. :D Train with bike is in general way less stressful than an aeroplane but it varies a lot between the airports and airlines. I've got some mild damage to my bike sometimes but e.g. on Lufthansa flight from Helsinki to München everything was perfect although I hate fiddling with pedals (good hex tool is a must). But in general I've found it easier to just cycle through Germany, not that big country after all. Next I hope she tries this in Sweden. No, not really. Why, Sweden, why?
@AlineGoesCycling
@AlineGoesCycling 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I guess it really depends on the location, airline, and other factors. I'll fly to Valencia soon, but will rent a bike there because the price for bringing my own and renting it is almost the same. Less hassle, in my opinion, even though it would be great to have my own bike there.

That's a good question - I don't know! I guess it depends on how much space it takes up? Would be a cool way to travel around Germany, though, hope it works out sometime!
@theresabu3000
@theresabu3000 Жыл бұрын
Because there's not enough space it won't be possible in ICE and IC trains. In regional trains not in rush hour you might get lucky to have enough space (but baby carriages and wheel chairs have priority) - but not every train is convenient to take (3 steps up or a divider in the door make it difficult to get a bike on the train). Its often an adventure - even if the bigger train stations have now a functioning elevator.

Yes, I bought an extra ticket for the bike and they gave me a spot with a number for it (on the ICE only). The bike was 15,- € each way, and the other tickets were around 80 €, if I remember correctly. It always depends on how early ahead you book.
