Just some suggestions: - Bigger weapon that is further inside the shell (so same point where you hit opponent, but more of the weapon is protected). - Paper mache toppings up top (only dangerous when facing a flame but also hilarious for the same reason). - Color the wheel to match the toppings (green wheel?). Other than that I just want to say that I love the design, and seeing it work at this weight class makes me giddy with joy. I love all the unconventional robots (NHRL whack bots are amongst my favourites and seeing bots like Timber Viper and Monkfish do well also makes me so happy).

I love the taco. Proving grounds is such a great concept since it allows first time builders to actually get some box time and figure out the flaws before entering a trash bot into the championship. Also funny that there are now two food-themed bots with some cool innovation behind them (ripperoni with the counter-flywheel system and now the taco with T drive). I get the dislike for omni-wheels since they can be pretty delicate but your turning wheel is pretty big and seemingly well protected by the frame so you should be able to build something really sturdy. You can also look into some kind of wheel thread type in the form of bristles or something else that will help maintain grip in one direction while allowing it to slide more easily in the other, but an omni-wheel is probably the best solution.

if you're not fully locked in on the dual discs, another way to protect the belts more would just be a larger disc- the belts get hit because the disc doesn't stick out far enough to hit the opponent before they hit your hub! this would also seriously improve KO power, crucial since you'll probably never win a shoving match
@CarterHurd8 ай бұрын
This is also on the table, and I agree with your point
@PelleKuipers8 ай бұрын
This would also give the option to have the whole weapon assembly further inside the bot where the point of contact is still the same but more of the shell is covering the sides.
@LateralThinkerer8 ай бұрын
If you have the time and bandwidth, look into designing your own omniwheel. The "official" ones are used for 360 degree movement/force application (and have some shortcomings) whereas yours has to apply force in one axis and roll in the other - much simpler/more robust and you could likely get there with a bunch of wheels on a hoop.
@theexchipmunk6 ай бұрын
I reccomend this so much too. In regards to the design requirements the "omniwheel" would only need to go back and forth in two directions. So it would be more of a "dual-wheel". One large wheel with multiple smaller wheels fixed around it´s circumference would likely work quite well. In the back forth direction it would roll free, and if rotated sideways the wheel would grip. The benefit is that a quiet grippy wheel surface could be used and make for a lot of traction sideways, but impact the back and forwards drive very little.

The belts jumped to my eye immediately and I was not really surprised when they got wrecked. Personally, in addition to the dual blade arrangement I would also add some form of shielding. That could safe it from an accidental hit. If you really don´t want to go with some form of multidirectional wheel, I would throw another Idea in. A hard wheel with a sharp "skid" profile. Kind of like ice skate skids. As the arena floor is steel, you would need quite the hard material, either, depending on what steel the floor is made from, hardened steel or carbide, but it could work. The profile is parallel to the back and forward direction, so when driving it slides over the floor, but when turned the sharp skids turn into teeth that grip the steel floors and give traction.

How about putting some rubber vibration dampers between the shell and its connections to the frame? That way the shock vibrations to the frame and internals would be reduced immensely and make the bot much harder to kill and able to tank more shots thus requiring less maintenance even between "safe" fights. They don't have to be very thick or add much weight. Regarding the weapon: still think the mono bar is the best option. You don't even need to make it heavier, just a little thinner on the axial size (in other words making it less "wide angle") and longer so that it has more reach and bite for the same mass. More reach would allow to sit the weapon assembly deeper into the taco so the belts would be harder to reach or allow to put a steel cover cover over the belts like some vert spinners already do. Good luck!
@CarterHurd8 ай бұрын
The rubber idea was actually part of the initial design, I think team overhaul calls them “wubs”. We ended up not doing it simply due to time and weight, but V1.5 we may bring that idea back. My general combat robot building philosophy is (1) “empty space totally counts as armor”, and (2) “bend so you don’t break,” and rubber spacers are aligned with both of these goals. Re. The weapon…. Yeah, you might be right. We may take a look at the deathroll weapon, and learn from that.
@ProtonOne118 ай бұрын
Would be cool if the steering wheel was on a little swivel-joint that raises and lowers the wheel a little bit. When ever you spin the rear wheel, it would drop down at the same time and hit the ground, but when you don't spin it, a spring would pull it back up so it could just drag the rear of the taco freely on the ground. Not sure if that would still allow for responsive steering, and it would still break the forward motion as soon as you try to turn, but might be worth a try. Having that mechanism inside the taco would probably be better than trying some kind of vulnerable omniwheel setup.

I’m super curious what you dislike about an Omni wheel for the steering wheel application. It seems like the perfect thing, in terms of the functionality you’re after. Slips fully in the direction you need it to, grips fully in the direction you need it to. Is it a fragility issue? Could do a UHMW wheel with tpu rollers that’d be able to take a ton of abuse. It just seems like exactly the right use case, but I imagine you have a good reason.

@@CarterHurd Definitely understandable. Idk if you’ve watched James Bruton’s channel, but he makes super large Omni wheels (bike sized wheels) a lot, and I think if you followed a similar process but CNC’d the main piece out of one hunk of uhmw and printed the rollers in tpu or used some metal rollers, it’d be a nice end result. Might have to do two pieces of UHMW for significant cost savings. I think it’s at least worth pricing out. Hope to see you guys accepted on the show or on another proving grounds!

No substance to my Omni wheel dismissal? I didn’t think I needed to elaborate, the complexity and fragility is obvious One cheap and simple off the shelf part, vs a custom fabrication project consisting of… well let’s say the Omni wheel has 30 rollers… each will need 2 bearings… that’s 30*3… and each roller will need an axle, so make that 30*4 = 120 brand new components to add to the design. Vs 1 single component. The question is whether 120 additional parts, plus designing and CNCing a custom central hub and making some spares is worth the decrease in friction when sliding sideways vs alternative solutions. It may be worth it. We shall see. But the cons are clear. EDIT: I’m sorry if this was mean. Not trying to be mean. Just things that seem simple become complicated once you need to make them robust enough to survive combat.

You can’t typically get away worth normal steel, you want Hardox (our spinner was Hardox 450 and even that only lasted 2 fights). And yes, it needs to be 1 piece. Hardox basically restricts you to either waterjet (this is what we used) or wire EDM. Feel free to email me at carterhurdrobotics@gmail
@bami28 ай бұрын
Composite/welded weapons are inherently fragile compared to single-piece and with a beater type weapon it will surely crack on the welds since the stresses will be located in just a couple of points. You have to imagine that you're hitting your welded thing on something that is also welded steel, the stress goes both ways. Many people have tried and it only really works at lighter weight classes. There are also teams that tried dado-like stacks of discs to form a beater but the problem there is that you lose most of the moment-of-inertia advantages that a beater bar has, since it's carrying more weight in the center of the weapon that doesn't help much. The super high cost for beater weapons is due to it having to be machined out of a single block of abrasion resistant (AR or Hardox) or even tool steel (which is ridiculously tough to work with and a lot more expensive than just standard mild steel from just sheer machining/cutting hours), and then it has to be heat-treated by a special company that can work with such huge pieces of steel and takes literal days in ovens and slowly cooling down.
