I Totally TRANSFORMED my Interior Lighting with this £3 Mod! - YOU can too!

I've finally gotten around to fitting and filming this EL (Electro-Luminescent) light wire to the door cards of my MK2 Leon. Its something I always felt was missing from the interior, considering its younger brother, the MK3 had it fitted in it's door cards.
So follow along to see how you can do the same on pretty much any car, not just the Leon, so as to help improve the interior, and make it just the way you want it.

Did that years ago to my MK2. Such a simple yet elegant mod with minimal electrical knowledge of cars. 1. Make sure you buy your kit with the INVERTER, I forgot it myself and wondered why it didn't work 🤣 2. I personally bought 2m El wire and it was plenty to go all the way around the whole cloth/leather insert in the door. 3. Slamming doors will eventually cause the el wire to pop out.

Your spot on 👍🏻 I had the same issue with one years ago that was missing the inverter bit. And these versions with the flat edging behind the main light seem to help a little with holding it on place better, but time will tell 😁 Cheers Tomasz 👍🏻

My 2011 Seat Leon's window switcher runs at 6v not 12v. You can find a 12v wire (red and yellow) behind the audio speaker, tied in a bunch with other wires. Hope this helps.

@@fredfly1509 I had the same issue, I couldn't find any wire behind the speakers that ran 12 v, there was one behind the glove box and one live at the cigarette lighter. Until I changed my car battery. So the only thing I would sugget is to first check your car battery. Can I ask you what led kit are you using?

@@johnbaesv4776 just same kit that's in the video mate. Gonna be a pain to try and feed a supply to the doors, but it looks really good when it's done. Did changing your battery make a difference?

@@fredfly1509yes, it did. I had the same issue. I spent 4 days trying to find a live at the door. Changing the battery was a coincidence at that time. After, I retested the wires trying to find a 12v one, and the tester showed different and accurate values, because of the new battery. The red and yellow behind the speaker are 12v. Make sure your led kit requiers 12. If it requiers 6v, find a wire that has 6v. When you find the wire you need, make sure you find a good ground as well,the led won't light up. By the way, I didn't use the wires going to the speaker(those could be 6v, I needed 12v for my kit) I used the red and yellow behind the speaker, but coming from inside of the car and through the door. If your kit requires 6v,test the wires that connect to the speaker directly, mines run at 6v, and see which one is 6v live and which one is ground. If one of the wires shows 6v, but the led doesn't light up, change only the ground. If you remove the fabric panel from the door, some of the screws connected to the car are good grounds.

My doubt is how make the connection to the doors, I got USB ports to conect it but don't know how to install it in the doors without visible wires

I'm not sure if USB ports would be able to be connected to standard wiring. Probably best to buy 4 new strip lights with the inverter box instead, as they are reasonably cheap. Then you could use the USB ones somewhere else 👍🏻

So for example, on aliexpress they sell different sizes, 1m, 2m, 5m. I have the same car. Do i have to buy for of 1m? And do you cut them? I do not know if 1m is to long for 1 door.

Yes, I bought the 1m lengths and hid any excess behind the door card out of sight. I was unsure if they would still work if I cut them, so I didn't risk it. Hiding the extra bit out of sight is just as effective 👍🏻

Do the lights work straight off the battery terminal? It will only work one way and not the other, so + and - need to be correct 👍🏻

I have a question about this mod, are the Led lights not to bright, did you find them distracting while driving?

No, not at all. I forgot they are a mod I've added to be honest, and they haven't been a distraction. My only thing that bugs me, is in the daytime, (when they aren't lit), they stand out a lot because of how bight the red colour is on them. Thats one thing I wish I could change. Maybe I'll try to tint them with spray.

At 6:10 wich mm drill you are using?

It looks like either my 8mm or 10mm drill bit I'm using, just so it's barely large enough to get the small connection block through

Had mine in a while think its a great little mod only thing is they've just stopped working, hooked them upto the battery and working still... what do you think the problem could be mate?

Hmmm, not sure. If it's definitely working off the battery directly, then it must be to do with the connections in the door. You could try a soldered connection instead which may be more reliable and longer lasting. Just use heat shrink to cover it all afterwards.

@@NorthCoastWorkshop yea definitely working straight from the battery as I thought the wire or the driver might be blown at first but lit straight up from the battery so put them back on the window wires and nothing

If it's different coloured wires than the ones shown, I'm afraid you'll have to use the multimeter, as I did in the video, to track down which wires you'll need 👍🏻
