Great job on getting that VW running, Jack. I had to laugh when the battery fell out! Back in the 80s my husband restored VW Beetles. We had a '65 that the floor was rusty but he restored the body and put a new paint job on it so it looked great on the outside. I was concerned about the rusty floor under the battery but he said no problem. One day I was driving it and it did a sudden death. I pulled over and a gentleman came running up to my car and told me a battery just fell out of my car. Well that explained why it quit running. I was not amused at the time, but we've gotten a lot of laughs out of it since then. I am a 76 year old woman, but I love to watch your videos. I grew up with a dad and husband who liked to work on cars, so I admire you for all you are learning. You have a wonderful dad!

I vote for Pasture Bug. When I was your age (in the early 70's) I had a Pasture Corvair that I had a blast in. If all else fails you could always build a dune buggy. Looks like you're becoming quite the wheeler dealer Jack.

Whatever you do save the vacuum advance distributor. I have rebuilt several. People loved to tear those out and put a centrifical Bosch 009 distrubtor and they never run right. If you can get it back to original and bring the chirp back then you know you have it dialed. Also there is a flap system in the air housing that is attached by a rod to a thermostat below the right side of the block. This is what allowes the engine to warm up. Most of the time people ripped those out because if they go bad the engine gets hot and will seize up if that thermostat fails. People always complained they had no heat because people tore all that stuff out because you had to change that thermostat regularly to protect the engine.

Good for you for taking on a project like this! My first car was a 1974 VW bug. It was $400 bucks, and I bought it by selling my 4-H steer at auction when I was 16 years old (a long long long time ago!). It was a project car for sure! No fenders, no breaks and more. My dad and I got it running great and found parts from a local junk yard. Lasted many many years until it got smashed by a snow plow. ~ Great memories as my dad has passed now. So happy to see you out there working on this project with your dad. I see your's is a super-beetle by the way the spare tire is sitting. The floor is made separate floor pans/panels that can be replaced. Looking forward to seeing more videos of this project in the future. :)

After the throttle linkage came apart I once rode 5 miles on the rear bumper of a bug while my friend drove and I operated the throttle, because it beat walking that far! (Couldn't pick up a cell phone for a "Hey Dad" in 1982). Back in the day it was easy to get a brand new floor pan for an old bug, but I don't know if that is still true.

I would do the Engine swap to another Bug...besides the Floorpan the Interior needs everything. I don't remember if the 72's had a 1500cc or they were bigger. If bigger put it in a pre-70's bug. You guys have a fun life...

Jack, I am a younger granny of 68 years old and in 1972 I got my first car and even though I am a girl my Dad taught me how to change the tire, tune up the engine, disassemble clean and reassemble my carburetor and fuel pump. Later on I learned how to remove and replace the brake master cylinder in a Kharman Ghia. Oh yeah! My first car was a 1967 VW Beetle. Dark blue and I miss it.

My ex is a red seal mechanic and I learned so much and was so fun to hang around the shop and get to knowing how to fix the belt when it would come off and so much more. How to drive with two feet to keep the engine running as it would stall before I could get it into the shop on the other side of town . Driving fast was fun too. Like it was driving that little Volkswagen around the field 😊❤️
