Scammers, for the large majority of the time, seem to be a very specific type of person. A lazy, uninspired, unintelligent, rude, and above all else greedy mockery of a human being. So, the prospect of an "easy" swindle was the perfect trap. Also, the fact that this was all largely automated is all the more pleasing. Really feels like you're starting to fight fire with fire here and I'm so happy to see it.

Computers give power to these creatures, and it's the same with cheaters/hackers on online multiplayer games: they aren't good at anything IRL so they have to boost their virtual presence artificially. So long as they see numbers going up on their screens, they don't care about how miserable they make others. I'd think, as well, that relatively few tweaks could be used to make it look like different crypto/gift card redemption websites. I worked customer support for several internet/phone companies a few years ago. Some of the instructions, that MUST be followed to the t, include this in their customer care strategy. We know full well as technicians taking and making calls that the number we are transferring them to does not go anywhere. Ever. They just want the customer to get so frustrated that they give up. It also helps their call volume when they repeatedly call back, only to get lost in the same process. These companies typically have a monopoly of the service they provide, so they just don't care if the customer is mad or "I'm going somewhere else". Because they can't.

Calling that one friend and getting their voicemail which has been full for a few years is enough to send me into a rage after wasting 60 seconds of my time. Getting that kind of message after hours and hours and thinking you're getting a live call representative is so beautiful it brought a tear to my eye.

Another great aspect of all this is that there are literally hundreds of scams targeting crypto-users, and so it's not even that unrealistic that the same "victim" of the scammers is the victim of a shady or fake crypto exchange. So the scammers don't even know if they're dealing with a legit exchange or not, but have to pursue it regardless. When they're talking to Kitboga as a call-center rep and trying to bully him it's just not the same as when they're trying to bully victims (even Kitboga in character). The power dynamics are completely reversed, and the scammer knows it. The levels of irony are getting thick, and even if the scammer is aware of it, there's almost nothing they can do. They have to pursue it.

The great thing about this is that it removes whatever leverage these guys think they have, as opposed to ordinary scambait calls. In the calls they think Kitboga is an old person, even if they don't get any money and they waste their time, they can lock the (vm) computer and go to bed thinking the victim can't access their computer anymore without them. Here, they're completely resourceless. They have no way to get back at the service, real or imagined. No consolation. No one to threaten or insult. It's beautiful.

I learned that if you don't answer the phone, don't even deny the call, you just let it ring their system will think it's an unused number and take it out of the system. I went from having 5 or 6 calls a day to maybe 2 in a month.

These scammers suffer something similar to gambling addiction. The next roll or next hand or next spin has the chance of the payoff. As long as they feel like "one more thing" will get them there, they will remain pigeons at the pecking post tapping incessantly to get that food pellet. Kit and crew are on the right track using this tech to combat scammers who will no doubt use the same tech for nefarious purposes against innocent victims. Expand the scope to trap more bad actors.

I actually cried when you helped that woman; even the fake voice sounded like my grandmother. She has had her pictures held ransom, photos of myself and family when I was just a baby. Priceless images... I could see her falling for everything all over and it literally gives me nightmares. I try every day to remind her but she has progressive memory issues and can be downright incoherent at times. I love her so much, I want to protect her. This is my favorite episode so far; as a software developer, I'm amazed at the elaborate nature of your fake phone system. I am literally laughing uncontrollably with tears running down my face. Incidentally, I've been trapped in phone trees like yours before for legit companies. Hours on permahold only to have it transfer you and then hang up on you. I won't mention any names, but their initials are A, T, and T. I wrote the first part before the reveal at the end.
