Ikenna If you ever want to learn American Sign Language I can teach you for free. I teach on italki, but would love to show you how simple it is to use ASL in the first lesson, I’am sure you’ll pick it up quickly! ASL doesn’t have conjugations like spoken languages, it’s a bit different and has it’s own grammar, but easier than most spoken languages especially at the beginning!!

@joecleland30165 жыл бұрын
Gopher Lee Assimil New French with Ease (NFWE) is a course recommended after completing 1-3 levels (30-90 lessons) of Pimsleur by many polyglots. Ikenna has posted many videos talking about it but in short you’re introduced to a much wider list of vocabulary while subconsciously learning about sentence structure and grammar through Assimil’s unique method. There are several ways to use the product but most listen to a passage in their target language. You read the translation in your native language then your target language. You can shadow the sentence saying out loud while practicing your pronunciation for each word. I will encourage you to do a little research on the product but it’s amazing. I’ve been learning through Ikenna’s method and suggestions he has listed in his book. It was so worth the purchase as I have made tremendous progress for just shy of 3 months of language learning. Here is the product to review for purchase- www.bookdepository.com/Assimil-French-Assimil-Nelis/9782700512892?ref=grid-view&qid=1569379468919&sr=1-2 I gave you this link because it is cheaper but note Assimil is a French company and their website is completely in French.

What I found worked for me to get over my fear of talking in Mandarin was to go to my local Asian market and just at the end of the purchase say "xie xie" (thank you) then I would say "ni hao" (hello) both times I did this they were very nice and encouraging. Eventually I would go every other day to get a single thing (normally a drink for only a dollar) and I would always try to tell them 1 new sentence. I began to look forward to my lesson because afterwards I could see if real speakers could understand me. A few times I did mess up and would be really embarrassed, but now I don't really mind messing up. Infact the other day I found a package in characters, I told one of the ladies I couldn't read it and asked how to cook it. when I got home I saw they were actually Korean... Oops... I felt a little silly but not mortified or embarrassed

On the flip side of the coin, if you take an interest in your teacher by asking questions, raising your own topics etc instead of relying upon them to keep the conversation going all the time (which can be quite exhausting), you'll find that not only will the time fly by and you both enjoy the lesson, but you'll also improve too, as within your questions and topics that you bring to the table could be new words, phrases, grammatical tenses that you'll be putting in to practice in actual conversations. I have a few different Spanish teachers and they are all quite different and useful in their own way, I improve and learn different things through different methods by using different teachers.

I think being a good language teacher/tutor really comes with experience. I taught English in Japan for four years. I got really good at understanding what my junior high school and adult students were trying to say. (The younger kids were mostly learning tons of vocab and hadn't progressed to making their own sentences yet, learning Japanese was essential to teaching that group). But, it got to the point with the older kids that sometimes I didn't know how to correct them. Sometimes because I knew some of them had personalities that would be incredibly demotivated if I corrected them too much, but mostly because I became fluent in their version of English. Sometimes I had to pause and think, wait how could I make this sentence better? Being able to identify that definitely comes with experience. You have to identify the mistakes, know what they're trying to say, and also know what corrections are going to help them with the level they are at. Even the smallest language mistakes can come with a lot of information you could give your student. You've got to know how much of it your student needs right now. It's a lot to process for both tutor and student.

I've been tutoring French on Italki for a few months now, and I really agree on most of what you say, I often advise people to try different tutors because it's good to get input from other people, and for some of them, I'm even telling them that my teaching (actually tutoring because I hate traditional classes and always have to come up with useful information from context) style does not fit them. That's where I don't totally agree, if I really have a good vibe with most of my students, some other students are just very hard to keep active for the whole session they booked and really need to be fed so much without realising they booked from a tutor and not from a professional teacher. So basically, I would advise people with a good knowledge who want to practice to get tutors, but you should definitely pay more to get a real teacher if you're a beginner and you're not aware of your learning style, especially since it is very easy to become a tutor on Italki (you basically just need to be fluent and make a short video). Finally, I've seen many people being very happy about the thing you said that I could come up quickly with the right way to say things when they would babble some broken French or even use words from other languages (typically other romance languages they know) and that's a good point on which people should judge tutors! Anyways, keep up with the good work I love your videos and even share them to some people who are loosing motivation!

10:38 this is the main point that makes me take lessons with new tutors at italki, sometimes the usual tutor understands me too well, and I need to check if it works with other people as well. That is also a reason why I add 'language exchange' sessions with people who are not teachers, they are not prepared to understand my mistakes and they are more 'real people' in this situation :)

For the people here who either don't want or can't spend money on Italki then you guys should try tandem. It's an app that matches you with the people who speak your target language and are learning your native one. One thing I really like about it is that it mostly matches you with people of the same age range (so if you're a minor and aren't comfortable speaking with adults it's pretty useful). I've met a lot of really interesting people on there and even made a couple of friends, the only problem with it is that it's pretty difficult to ever get over texting and finally calling to practice your speaking skills

For those of you who don't find time to learn a new language (trust me, I have the same issue): - Study on the train or on the bus (I travel approximately 4h in total to and from university every day) - Instead of wasting your time on Facebook, Instagram or KZbin, follow some accounts that teach you grammar, join study groups or find motivation through videos (for example on Ikenna's channel). - Watch TV/cartoons in the language you're learning in your free time. - Read books with easy grammar in the language you're trying to learn. - If you don't have anyone to speak to in that language, talk to yourself! Say some expressions out loudly and say what's on your mind! (Trust me, it really helps). - Download some useful apps (I know Ikenna has suggested some before). - Try to put in an hour of language-learning every day. One week = 7h language learning. - When making shopping lists etc., write down the words in that language! There are of course more things you can do, and you'll find time through motivation! Also, thank you Ikenna for making such awesome videos! Gracias! شكرا! Tack! ありがとう!

Ikenna do you mind showing us you speaking French in public , I am starting to not believe that someone can reach a 6month fluent conversational in frenxh

I'll probably do a 24hour speaking challenge with my GF since she's a french speaker. Look out for that vid.

People most definitely can with proper dedication and education. I forgot which department of the U.S. has classified French as a language that can be fluently learnt within 6 months minimal. Arabic and Chinese being about 2 years.

@@IkennaLanguages Alright cool, what verb tenses are vital to learn in order to communicate with french, which one did you learn?

@@blessing142 Learn présent and participe passé. For future, you get by using "je vais" which is equivalent to "I'm going to".

@@mmlemonade I'm going to learn 7 verb tense or 6. From there I'll just use those and communicate until I progress ?

It was fun to get a student's perspective on this! I'm a Bengali/Hindi tutor at Preply (also speak Japanese- my introduction video is on this ↖️ channel!) and I've always wondered how students felt outside of what they said in class!

I think you should really work on your french grammar/propositions (and you have the occasion to be immersed if you are still in Belgium), you seem to have a decent vocabulary, but it would help you dramatically to study more the real (boring) grammar.

In my case depends in the language, learning German I need to understand and listen more phonetics plus I like to make a schedule and know the topics in advance, for Russian i like to read more and be visual with illustrations for my vocabulary. I think is good you look forward to listen and improve Olga 😊👍🏼 all the best

it's possibly just a social skill variance when it comes to the tutors that can't hold a convo, not intelligence imo. you can be a very smart person and still suck at communicating with another human. they may need to pick another job. if they can't hold a convo, language tutoring may not be the right fit for them.

Ahhh true! Different personalities fit different work. Also tied to experience, I’ve had some lessons with tutors that have had taught over 4000 lessons and they can predict what you’re going to say before you think it, it’s crazy.
