What do you do when you have a scene that just isn't working? Have you found a method that works?

Wish there were more writers reviewing different writing craft modalities/frameworks and compare them. So glad your channel exists! Sadly you have so few subscribers and i don't know why...something's wrong with youtube for not making your channel more visible. Please don't stop making such useful videos.Thank you so so much! "but the book coach will be the judge of that!" Why is this book coach qualified to judge that and how do you know for sure? BTW what is your day job?

I'm glad you liked the video! I'm just waiting for the day when the gods of KZbin decide to smile down on me and send more viewers my way :) And about the book coach, I was more thinking that I'd gotten a bit close to this scene, and external feedback would help me figure out whether or not I'd gotten it. The coach in question is actually a friend of mine who's currently doing an accreditation and she needs to do a manuscript critique for one of her assignments, and she asked if she could review mine. So it's a win-win - I get some extra feedback for free, and she is able to get credit towards her course.

I really appreciate the work you're putting into your novel. I, too, am struggling with scenes, which is occasionally complicated by short term memory going hay-wire. I'll state something, and 2 lines later, say something opposite. Here, I thought I was ready for Beta readers, but on my "last" time through, I've found just so much to rework and revise! How did you finally resolve this issue with this one scene? Did it work out ok? Did you send it back to beta readers? I'm a first time novelist, so the process is new to me. I'm thinking of ditching my WIP, and starting something new. At the same time, I really look forward to conquering that learning curve, and having a brilliant novel -- How do I find a book coach? . -- Good luck. I'm rooting for you.

Good luck - it's so challenging when you feel like everything around the scene works, and then you have one problem child that just won't behave! Yes, I think I got this one into shape - there are still a few minor improvements I need to make through the book (some are as simple as adding a line or a paragraph to certain moments), but I thought it was in good enough shape to start querying (which I'm doing at the moment). Now I'm working on a new project, though, and have a chunk of the book that I just can't crack... so I've skipped to the next bit and am leaving it to future Jacqui (I'm sure she'll thank me later). Regarding the book coach, it was actually a friend of mine who was doing a certification, and she needed to do a critique for an assessment and asked if I had anything she could look at, so I didn't actually look for one. You can check her out at www.kyliezeal.com/ - her website's mostly targeting nonfiction authors, but she also works with fiction. Otherwise, I'd just start Googling and see who you resonate with - if you're not sure, some people might be open to doing a trial as well (e.g. they look at your first 5 pages so you can get a sense for how they work).
