A quick tip for making things more round: Each poke of the needle will compress the wool in the direction of the poke, so if you want to make it more round, you will need to be more varied in the direction of the pokes. For a cylinder you'll want to poke a bit, rotate a small mount, poke a bit, rotate, etc. Poking too much on one side will make it flat because you are compressing it all in the same direction.

Yeah I figure I didn’t really turn it enough. Thank you for your insights!

I am an avid needle felter and I have some tips for you. From what I can see it looks like you may need to poke harder. Finished needle felted pieces are quite dense. You can actually know it's finished by the fact that you don't see any fuzzy wool sticking out. For round pieces you want to poke all the way around. You work on one side a bit then turn repeat. The pieces will get smaller as you work them so you're absolutely right about adding more wool as needed. Overall, for a first try you did well! It's very cute. I'm glad you enjoyed the process. You can also make needle felted pictures if that interests you. Flat pieces that you can put in a frame or an embroidery hoop!

I love needle felting! Would suggest the following: * get a 2-3" thick cushion, like from Joanns, the kind to make seat cushions. Be sure to get the denser foam. Put it on a thick piece of cardboard so you don't damage your table surface * sit with your back straight, every 30 minutes or so stop and stretch your neck, back, shoulders * get a tool that has multiple needles on one shaft, speeds things up. Some have thicker needles for starting the felting and finer ones for more delicate work. * you can make your own roving if need/want to -- just cut lengths of yarn, wool or I've used acrylic (!), tie them to bottom of a hanger, then use Lily's slicker brush to brush out the yarn. * you can "paint" with the roving. Get a piece of wool or wool felt, sketch a design lightly onto the felt, then poke away! If lots of fun, can be embellished with beads, etc. * some use a special guard on their finger to avoid stabbing their own fingers. No one literally wants your "blood, sweat and tears" in the piece! * you can use a metal cookie cutter as a tool. Put the cookie cutter on the foam mat, put the roving inside and stab away. Makes great ornaments. Mostly have fun!

This series is lovely, I'm defeantlly happy to see more of your crafting fores because I'm slightly learning how to do the paper crafts so I know how to make Mini Album folios, and larger folios. that way I can use up mom's old paper stash, I'm doing art in some way, but also I'm not doing the same thing all the time. The Felting project came out adorable though I do remember seeing other felters turning the pieces a bit more often, so I have a feeling that's probably why the rounder shapes worked because you moved them enough to get the shape you want and by that point you've kinda figured it out. So I have a feeling your next project you're pretty much going to automaticly start shifting the object you want to spin. I didn't realize it's not always the case as I've also seen people always talk about the core wool so it helps in bulking it out without using up the main design wool and you have an easier time with getting the shapes you want. So maybe when you continue, make sure you have some core wool that you wouldn't care will be under the rest (kinda like the stuffing of an amagrumi)

I used to do needle felting all the time. The shaping is definitely tricky! And you always need way more wool than you think. But it is a very forgiving craft. There are lots of tutorials out there so definitely check them out. The learning curve isn't too steep either. I started by watching Maqaroon make kits both as tutorials and for asmr purposes.

Thanks for this video, Rachel. I received a felted hummingbird kit for Christmas and wasn't that excited about it, but I am wanting to try it out now. I'm wondering if any of the photos were taken from the side, because from the front, the fox does look rather flat. As for the sore shoulders, in my kit it gives this advice: "Keep your shoulders relaxed. If you start to tense up, put it down for a moment and pour yourself a cup of tea." I love that!

That’s what I was thinking for nalbinding! Because the spit and rolling between your hands to join the lengths of yarn seems a bit…icky. Maybe I’m a bit over civilized? Or I’ve just watched too many cop procedural shows so I don’t like the idea of my DNA being all over the place?

My only experience with needle felting was at a convention during a "panel" about using it to create cosplay accessories. This is when I learned that I am impatience incarnate. There's my friend, carefully and meticulously forming the felt, and then me going at it like I'm a sewing machine. I'm not much of a sculpture person, but I'd love to try it again for ami details and stuff. Learning new stuff is always good. And i spent the episode knitting a mitten

@@TfwcrochetOh, yeah, no I don't have much patience there either. I tend to work in stops and starts, putting stuff down for months at a time lol Also I cut a lot of corners, eyeballing stuff and going "eh close enough" and refusing to properly gauge swatch like ever lol

Ahhh, it's cute. ❤ I'm glad you enjoyed. You did good as a beginner. I would have watched a few Utube vidz for how-to instructions first. I never use kits, as I feel they are a money grabber. imo. They probably gave you $2 worth of supplies (at their bulk rate prices of course). I cannot even be around wool, extremely allergic. OMG I turn into one solid hive and my eyes swell shut & throat tightens. No wool warehouse visits in my future. 😢 Working on more scarves, everyone seems to want one now. I am on my 5th one and have 3 more to go. I am working smart to prevent injuries, only a couple hours at a time. I also get neck & back fatigue & migraines if I overdo it. So it's a long marathon, not a race. Pace yourselves... SWAK💋

You can totally compress it way more, if something turnes smaller or you poke too much in one direction and it flattens you can totally add more wool to it. As someone else said, for rounder shapes you need to poke in every direction

I am sure others have mentioned it already, but you can also felt your pet's hair. If it is clean, you can use the hair you brush out, and turn it into other crafts. Raise your working surface try your lap desk on top your desk and part of the hunching is your stress with a new craft. I would have wanted to buy 2 kits and do one and then film it.
