It's been an honor to have you on this journey. I didn't make it this time, but I look forward to partnering in the future! Thanks for the excellent video and documentation of the run! This run will go down in history as we broke achievements never before thought possible and could very well set the firm limit for speedrunning in the future. - Enzo
@rwdavidoffАй бұрын
I asked a question elsewhere but since you're here, maybe you can answer--would it be considered within the spirit to have a bike valet who got your bikes ready at the BART end, and another who put them back away at the CalTrain end to smooth the friction of that leg, or would this be a level of interference akin to recruiting somebody to hold a door and delay a train for a critical connection as far as "not allowed, that's cheating"?
@rwdavidoffАй бұрын
And uh...obviously congratulations on planning this route, and so glad you and Adam were able to demonstrate the route works.
@AdamDoesNotExistАй бұрын
What a pleasure! I feel so lucky that I got to be a part of this. Thank you for including me!
@CqtzYTАй бұрын
@@rwdavidoff I'd consider this as disallowed as at that point you're involving factors that weren't initially involved in the run, like external people. Witnesses shouldn't interfere with the run, and bystanders shouldn't have a bias to behave in any unordinary manner.
@atallshadeofthecolorred6918Ай бұрын
Missing the bike drop-off was such a heartbreaker! I imagine you've already re-litigated this, but in case you want the take of a regular user of these who doesn't even know what specific issues you ran into: - Prefer the "classic e-bikes" model (black with the big battery box on the frame -- granted, with one bike available you take what you can get) for something like this, the advantage being that it can be locked without available docks. Doing so near a full station should bypass the $2 fee. Technically you're not supposed to lock the bike to nothing. There are a couple of staple racks in front of the Caltrain entrance. - Dealing with finnicky docks: (1) Lift the bike by the seat while inserting, (2) Slam the bike into the dock (*), (3) If neither 1 or 2 work, check the triangle in front of the bike where it meets the top of the dock, if it's not lining up properly, push it up/down to align it with the dock. (*) I've noticed that the new dock model (as seen on the 4th St side of Caltrain) pretty much never requires slamming, so I've never tried yet. Congrats on the cool route!

Stumbled upon this by accident having no idea transit speedruns were a real thing. Throughout this past year there were multiple times where I thought to myself things like "that was probably only like 5 minutes off the world record for getting to this gate from passenger drop off at SLC", "that's probably less than a minute off the latest someone's left 여수expo and gotten on the 81", "all these highschoolers walking towards the optimal car to get off to be first in line for the escalator, they speedrunning life and I'm so here for it". I cannot express how happy 16:03 made me as I watched you and Enzo wait at a station for a train to arrive, lined up perfectly with the door, and then run away from that train as fast as possible instead of getting on, and then imply that you did that multiple times to practice the transfer. This is freaking awesome, and I hope I can be a part of one of these some day. Hit me up if you guys ever want to try one of these in Korea.

This was stellar storytelling and teamwork! Congrats on getting thru this with a win and way to go Enzo on pulling together the plan behind it. Also, as a fellow west coaster, just want to say thank you for showing the Bay Area in such a positive light. There’s a lot of really terrible misinformation out there about what it’s like, especially around crime and safety, and you kind of show a critically necessary picture of what things are really like to the world. Much respect!
@AdamDoesNotExistАй бұрын
Well thank you. That's exactly what I'm trying to do. You could highlight the negative aspects of any place. And we sure do have those. But it's so much more fun to show this place in a positive light. It's just as real, and strangely lacking in most media!

Congrats! Side note - I was part of the team that helped build the new Caltrain. I'm glad you liked it.
@atallshadeofthecolorred6918Ай бұрын
It surprises me that the OAK connector isn't timed on the fly for convenient transfers. It would add ~3 minutes to a perfect speed run, but for regular users of BART + OAK it would reduce waiting times once on the system, and from a layman's perspective doesn't seem terribly difficult to implement.
@AdamDoesNotExistАй бұрын
My suspicion is that it just doesn't need to be that exact if you're taking a flight. And there's no way to time it to arrivals given all the uncertainty. And arrivals are half the trips. It might not be ideal for speed runs, but all of BART works really well for people who use it the way it's intended.
@atallshadeofthecolorred6918Ай бұрын
@@AdamDoesNotExist I would turn that around on its head actually and say that a system like this would be worse for speedrunners 😃 For an airport traveler the ideal situation is to have the next departure be something like (walk time between platforms) + (a small margin like 2~3 min to account for walking speeds, fare gates, and boarding time). Judging by the static timetable for Coliseum BART it seems to be what BART is intending to do though this doesn't seem to pan out. For a speedrunner, the best possible time is going to be (run time between platforms) + (as little margin as possible). Taking it to the extreme, having it line up just a few times a day makes it even more satisfying for folks who figure out the best possible route 😉(but of course, makes executing the run that much more constrained -- I'm guessing both this segment and the Caltrain to Bart transfers were the determining factors for picking the best times for this route). One of the coolest parts of the BART system are the timed transfers between Transbay-only and East Bay-only lines. Because (if trains are running on time) you can transfer between them by walking across the platform to a train that arrives and leaves at the same time as yours, the time cost of your transfer is nil. This helps BART create more service for an equal amount of trains. I don't think these play a part in your route, but this is something regular users would take advantage of. But transfers in general suffers when schedules don't line up among infrequent services (I would frame this as 15+ minutes between trains/busses). If you're set up to miss your transfer by a hair, you're now adding 15 minutes of sitting around to your route. Increase this number enough or chain enough transfers, and this just ends up feeling like the transit service is sluggish, unreliable, and impractical. Now, I agree with you that in practice, people who make the trip as part of a fight aren't gonna mind the extra 10 minutes. But it's one of the easiest sections for them to control (compared to coordinating with SamTrans, AC Transit, Caltrain, etc), and it's in a way the front door to Bay Area transit if coming in from OAK. If we can't even get that right, I wouldn't count on it. For an airport transfer that's really terrible I would look no further than Millbrae ☹ It should be a slam dunk but whenever I try to use it the BART train is off to the airport by the time I head down to the BART platform and I get to sit around for 15 minutes (roughly +50% travel time). And in the other direction, the terminal at Millbrae (and from your run, that's not the only BART terminal where this is an issue) seemingly fails to indicate which train will depart next, so that's another place where you can board the wrong train, and get stuck while watching your actual train go. It makes me question whether to just hail a car instead every time. It should've been a slam dunk 🙁 Anyway, sorry about all the rambling. Congrats on the run, and to Enzo for the new route getting the best validation there could be.

Baywheels between Powell and 4th & King is one of my favorite Bay Area transit hacks. It's often super tight; missed it today by about 2 minutes due to the incoming train being late. But, if successful, it can shave 20 minutes off the journey between Oakland and the Peninsula, and in the worst case, you wait for the next train, arrive at the same time as the BART-to-Millbrae transfer, and enjoy the Caltrain EMUs for a greater fraction of the journey.

The trickiest part of speed running it is connecting all the branches, as there’s only one end that’s shared between two lines, all the others are served by only one. Fair enough. I definitely wouldn't be against the rules being rewritten as well. It's just awesome to see speedrunning getting more publicity! I also love your other videos as well so keep up the good work.

It's pretty much impossible to be interested in transit and not love Jet Lag. It's so good!
@alexanderkvenvolden4067Ай бұрын
@@AdamDoesNotExist Yes, definitely. I think the Jet Lag team should look at smaller games like Jet Lag across the Bay Area. There's so much optionality and diversity of travel types, and I think it could be easily at least as entertaining as a game of Tag across Europe.

I've done this too! Although not for a GWR. I did one unsuccessful attempt on the London Underground, but seven months later managed to do a Full Network on the Vienna U Bahn And yeah, I can confirm how physically and mentally demanding it is, not to mention you have to carefully manage your food and drink so you don't run out
@AdamDoesNotExistАй бұрын
That's incredible! Another food and drink concern is using the bathroom
@reptongeekАй бұрын
I've had a couple of tight bathroom stops. One was at Stanmore on my London Underground attempt, I managed to get the train. On my Vienna run, I only needed one on an S80 train. Unlike you it was actually working!
Hi Adam! Have you ever considered doing an SF transit speedrun? Hitting every mode of transit (CalTrain, BART, Muni Metro, streetcar, cable car, bus, ferry) in as little time as possible. I think this would be a great video!
@AdamDoesNotExistАй бұрын
Yes I have! It’s actually quite a bit more complicated than I thought it would be. I will probably give it a go at some point, but not in a speedrun format. Some SF Chronicle writers did something called “total muni” a few years back. There’s a really cool article about it.

Someone commented on one of my videos saying it was like Jetlag. I had never heard of it at that point! So glad I know now!

Great video and congrats on the World Record! I really enjoyed watching and mad respect for the hustle! I'm curious though, did you guys consider picking up the bikes at Embarcadero Station and riding along The Embarcadero to the Cal Train Station? It would obviously add some distance (I think roughly 0.7 miles), but you would save about 4 minutes riding the BART from Embarcadero to Powell. More importantly, you would be able to book it on the e-bikes with more space and without having to wait for traffic lights for most of the ride.
@AdamDoesNotExistАй бұрын
Yeah we did talk about that. But we decided the extra distance wasn't worth it. Mongomery and 2nd st might also be a good option because 2nd doesn't have any on/off ramps to 80.

On the subject of beating the OAK connector more consistently. Even if it is very precise, the trains it sends through have to actually be present in the first place. Since trains are ran slower in warmer weather, it may actually save time to run during the summer months, timing it so you hit OAK connector right on time. If BART pays attention to the weather, which they should, there may be a window in there. Maybe accepting a slower run overall can save the OAK connector frame rule and deliver a faster time. Worst case scenario, it remains a partial RNG issue.
