it's a matter of habit, and how close you are connected with your body i think. Personally if i eat much meat, i start to develop allergy to the meat protein - which is shown as pollen allergy and allergy towards certain veg and fruit. Then naturally my body will tell me to go on veg diet. In fact, after being veg for some time, and if i'm not anxious and greedy, meat can even smell disgusting. Personally i find meat particularly appealing when i am not peaceful inside.

I am a vegetarian for almost 30 years, I lived in Shanghai for 11 years, I established my fashion brand when i first came to Shanghai, everyone who worked in my company was a vegetarian, because we only offer vegetarian food, haha, it was a great experience. I know a couple of temples in Nanjing that serve vegetarian. If you are in Shanghai, plenty of choices, I am sure there are at least over 60 vegetarian restaurants in Shanghai, probably more than 60 now.

Jared, you actually did the vegan challenge, vegetarians differ from vegans because of diary and eggs products. Props to you!!
I'm vegan. I would go back to China often to visit family and recently I also lived in Northeast China for 1.5 years. My experience is that despite the Northeasterners having so much meat, I never had any problems getting vegan food. There was also so many varieties for me to choose from. Not only from vegan/vegetarian specific restaurants but basically any restaurant can be vegan. Chinese food is easy to adapt and you just have to communicate your requirements to the chef. The other foreigners I worked with believed it was difficult to eat vegetarian but that's because of language barrier. They couldn't understand the menu fully and couldn't communicate effectively their choice. In southern China, I have even less problems and so many options.
Jared: going vegan is too hard, maybe next time also Jared: goes vegan

@werosification3 жыл бұрын
@@jaredfaa 0:22 on this table, vegan and vegetarian are the same thing, but in reality vegetarian is what is described as lacto-ovo vegetarian (so green for eggs and milk). and in the Chinese version, there are two 弹性素食者 (2 and 7). I'm vegan and I'm confused now 😅
I'm surprised that you didn't go seek out Buddhist restaurants. Growing up, that's what my family would go and eat every once in a while for a meat-free meal. They have some fantastic meat substitutes done in a Chinese style. The stuff you had at the vegetarian restaurant looks similar though

Great video! you hit all the issues with restaurants -- oils, adding meat "garnishes" (like bacon bits on a salad), fish or chicken broths or bases... I just ask. (I've been vegetarian for over 40 years, including a few trips to China). Thanks for another great video! 非常感謝你!

tbf, being vegetarian in China is sooo much more comfortable than in for example Germany. One big reason is in China, they use spices... yes it sounds dumb as hell, but in Germany, most local restaurants only know salt, pepper, and maybe some herbs. This leads up to the issue that you feel like you're eating the same fcking thing over and over and over again even though they are different on paper, but it just tastes the same. Vegan could be hard in china though since, as mentioned in this video, Chinese people love using things like lard to enhance the flavor of the dishes. But it's no something you can't avoid with proper communication.

From my experience, it is really easy to go vegetarian in Germany, there pretty much always are vegetarian options in every restaurant. I am not vegetarian, though. 😄
@ledoi59613 жыл бұрын
@@peanutjam not talking about how easy it is to get vegetarian food, yes it is easy to eat like a vegetarian, but it is so painful to pull it through unless you cook a lot yourself. While they pretty much all provide vegetarian options, they all taste the same since, no offense btw, Germans have no concept of seasoning their food properly. They eat the food in its natural flavor, only adding minimal seasoning, they don't try to do anything interesting with the ingredients. This is mostly fine with meat dishes since different animals or even different body parts taste very different in their own right. But with vegetables, since German cuisine don't do much with the raw ingredient and don't have a lot of spices, end up tasting very similar in most places.

Living in Germany right now, the Germans...I don't find a word to describe their food... Maybe only better than their English cousins.
@peanutjam3 жыл бұрын
@@user-jf8id7kw5k Agree, German food doesn´t have much taste to it and isn´t especially great for the most part. That´s why we (at leatrs where I live) don´t have many german restaurants, they are from all over, tons of itialian, middle eastern, vietnamese/thai and fast food.
@user-jf8id7kw5k3 жыл бұрын
@@peanutjam I suppose the most severe problem is, that the young generation of Germans are very "AMERICANISIERT" . (I suppose I created this German world) The pop culture, fast food, people don't really care what they are eating. I live in Tübingen, southern Germany and usually buy food from one Metzger(which doesn't only provide meat) which is mostly run and visited by Omas und Opas. The food is satisfying and the Omas also teach you how to cook properly. . But why only Omas and Opas? The cultural loss is kind of frustrating.

Instead of thinking about the meat I can't eat or the Chinese food I no longer find in the Bay Area, I look for the new and tasty vegetables, herbs, nuts, legumes, and fruits that I have not tried before. This is why it's not so hard for me to stay vegan. And always remember the health benefits and the positive impact on the environment from choosing a vegan diet.南京
I’m actually glad you accidentally tried being vegan for a week because I wanted to see what vegan options you could have 😄

Oyster sauce is often used and also satay sauce may contain shrimps as well as cross contamination like the oil to deep fry things may also have fried meat too, so depends on how strict you are. I found your captions too quick and had to "rewind" or pause to read them.
Was vegan for 3 yrs and vegetarian for 7 years but now I eat everything. I definitely struggled to be a picky vegan in China, especially only being able to eat food around the school. Being a not-picky vegetarian (accept meat broth etc.) definitely gives me much more options. Being overseas, I am happy restaurants create options for vegetarians, but they are simply not good - either not tasty or too expensive, especially lacking soy products is a big disadvantage.

I've been a vegetarian/vegan for 8 yrs now, and that's the best decision I've ever made! Even tho it can be complicated sometimes when you order, but I'd much rather make my life just a tiny bit more complicated than killing animals. Also, the vegetarian/vegan options in LA is endless. Most people stereotype vegetarian food, but you will realize vegetarian food nowadays are sooo good! You can't even tell the difference a lot of times!

Well, I guess it depends on what you want. If you become a vegetarian mainly for health reasons, what you want to avoid is animal protein, so there's no problem with occasionally getting some animal fat.
